    D&D 3.x 3.5 buying with 4E on the horizon

I'll be buying 3.5 material I really want, but only if it is heavily discounted. None of the high quality books are going to be rare or hard to find -- ever.

D&D 4E Support from mainstream booksellers - Ended by 4e?

I imagine that in most local bookstores (such as Borders or Barnes & Noble) they will still have 3.5 books sitting on the shelf long after the release of 4.0. In most cases, it's just another book to order and stock. Unless someone who works there is really paying attention, no one is going to...

Why Put magic Items in The PHB?

It sounds like a good idea. Sure, ideally, every single magic item would be mysterious and fill the players with wonder and awe. However, the D&D game has been around for 30 years, and many of the standard magic items are already well-known in gaming culture. Now, for brand new gamers, I would...

Should there just be one sort of elf?

I would hope so. I would really rather see the abilities of subraces defined more my cultural factors than hardwired racial factors. The drow might be an exception (as would the duergar for the dwarves), but for things like "grey elves" and "mountain dwarves" the differences should just be...

    Disdain for new fantasy

Yes, I really like wuxia... it just doesn't fit in D&D. Now, as far as anime goes, when I watched Princess Mononoke, I remember thinking "this is pretty cool, he's fighting a huge dire warthog!" But when I saw "aura" like abilities for clerics and paladins in a D&D splatbook, I thought, "this...

    D&D 4E Traps in 4e - Mearls blog

Wow -- what a strange design choice for WotC. I only use the core 3 books, and I've never bothered pricing out a pit trap. Maybe the price is high because kobolds belong to a Pit Diggers Union?

Castle & Crusades - who has tried it and not stuck with it?

I ran two games of C&C. Neither I nor my players were very happy with it. While many people claim "you can do anything with C&C" the fact is that you can do "anything" with any RPG system... or with a blank sheet of paper, for that matter. It's all a matter of how much work you want to put into...

    Disdain for new fantasy

D&D was based on the fantasy/sci-fi stories of of Fritz Leiber, Robert E. Howard, H.P. Lovecraft, Jack Vance and J.R.R. Tolkien as well as the old E.C. Comics (non superhero) and various mythologies. Over the past 30 years, D&D has been very inclusive of new fantasy ideas, even if those ideas...

I managed to log in: Sign up and login for D&D Insider now working!

OK, I'm really confused.... Is this page D&D insider? In the top right hand corner it says I am logged into D&D insider, but I don't really know what that means, because otherwise this looks exactly like the D&D page I normally see.

If you play DnD, how old are you?

I'm 33 and look much older

    D&D 4E Traps in 4e - Mearls blog

In my defense of the classic pit trap, I forgot to mention that I actually like the new ideas being put forward for encounter traps. Just don't malign the lonely old covered pit. It has served us well for many years, and as long as kobolds and goblins can pilfer shovels and tarps, will continue...

    Disdain for new fantasy

Think of an "updated" version of Monopoly that changed all the properties, utilities and tokens. Some people will like the new, different version -- case in point, all the College-opoly versions. But some people enjoy the history and experience of playing Monopoly with the classically defined...

    D&D 4E Traps in 4e - Mearls blog

pit traps are awesome Pits are never really boring non-encounters in my games, especially at low levels. A very basic encounter, yes, but not boring. First you have to spot the pit. Then you have to navigate over or around it. If you didn't do that, you have to avoid falling in the pit. Then...

Do you want gnomes in the first phb?

I agree with this part, but I still think they can be a great playable race. The problem may not be that gnomes can't find their niche, it's that the elves have been given more than their fair share of the "nature" niche. Elven racial abilities have never really reflected a race that is...

Do you want gnomes in the first phb?

Gnome are a big part of D&D to me. I don't see any reason to remove them. I am excited by the rules changes for 4e, but I am less than thrilled by the "fluff" changes. I don't mind the addition of Tieflings and so forth at all, but I'd like the original core race options to remain. Otherwise...

Do you want Tieflings in the phb?

Don't Axe Gnomes, Half-Elves or Half Orcs for Tieflings I don't mind having Tieflings as a core race, as long as the following prerequisites are met: * No PC races that have existed since 1e AD&D are removed to make room for Tieflings * Tieflings, Aasimar, Gensai, and all the other...

Do you still use your 3.0 books?

The only 3.0 book I kept after the 3.5 switch was the Living Greyhawk Gazetteer. I still use it on occasion.

    Greyhawk by another publisher?

I wouldn't mind seeing Paizo or KenzerCo take a shot at it.

    Design & Dev: Monsters (DRAGONS!)

I may be reading too much into this, but the Cleric didn't make a move before her attack, and she only attacked once. Since they are a party fighting a Dragon with lots and lots of hit points, I wonder if the Cleric has a low BAB, or if multiple attacks are gone (as in Star Wars SE).

    D&D 4E 4e: Stats of Stat Bonus?

I'd like to see this change as well. You wouldn't even have to have "negative" numbers. Just change the scale of DCs and other checks, and have stats range from +0 to +8 for the normal human range.
