Open Letter to WotC from Chris Dias

Yup, sorry. I submitted that post before having seen your reply.

I do not get you. Are you saying this from a licensee's or an end customer's perspective?

Open Letter to WotC from Chris Dias

Again, what you are asking for here Morrus is not something that a market analyst could sort out. If there were a dozen of competitive brands and some of them used an open license while others did not, all this within a somewhat stable pie market, then in this case an analyst could easily...

Open Letter to WotC from Chris Dias

It is not sensible to ask for the sort of data you are asking for. OGL, GSL or no license at all is mostly a matter of business sense and policy. It is rather a strategic matter for the brand. If Wotc wanted to have stronger third party support, it would probably market its intention by posing...

Ryan Dancey - D&D in a Death Spiral

For the hobby GW has established you can only be cool if you use exclusively GW material. They have a championship, namely the golden demon award, regarding the best painting and conversions of their miniatures. Regarding the conversions part, you can not use distinct bits of any other products...

Scott Thorne, a retailer, comments on recent events

If books were profitable they would have kept printing them unless they could have figured out that the printed books would have weighted negatively on the profits of DDI so that the profit losses of DDI would outclass the profits of the books. I am not seeing it.

    4 Hours w/ RSD: Who Am I?

Ryan, many people and many gamers are very glad for giving D&D to the OGL. Personally, I suspect that it harmed the hobby but nobody can really evaluate this matter in a clear and strict way, so I let it pass. It is very interesting though that Pathfinder is outselling D&D and this fact...

Scott Thorne, a retailer, comments on recent events

ICv2 - Rolling for Initiative--Oh, By the Way... It seems there have been going some abrupt changes of plans in the Wotc quarters.

    D&D has been cancelled (speculation).

Why? Couldn't it be possible that Wotc LLC represents all the rights and obligations of Wotc Inc??

    D&D has been cancelled (speculation).

Absolutely. A particular product investment may perform at an accounting loss but that investment deemed as a necessary part of a strategy for your whole business plan and profits. If D&D wants to retain a time-resistant value of public awareness and recognition it needs some real world...

    D&D has been cancelled (speculation).

Tell you what. If, from now on Wotc won't issue some kind of monthly print periodical (be it a magazine, be it some kind of supplement) to assure a minimum of relevant D&D presence in the real world, well the OP has a point.

Pathfinder 1E Question for the Paizo folks regarding D&D's state of today

WoW is to be eclipsed by some other product and most probably the same will happen to the brand name in the end -although it is not a given regarding the last one. Blizzard operates with this in mind. If they intend to keep the brand name of Warcraft relevant after WoW has been eclipsed, well...

Pathfinder 1E Question for the Paizo folks regarding D&D's state of today

The thing is that D&D to remain relevant as a brand needs constant retailer presence. Perhaps, the minimum of what it needs to achieve that is a monthly magazine in paper format like what Dungeon and Dragon used to be. It is rather telling that the video game and software industry make sure to...

Pathfinder 1E Question for the Paizo folks regarding D&D's state of today

Ok, but couldn't the second idea get in conflict with the first one? I mean, if D&D can become more profitable by going fully digital it is obvious that Wotc should act so. But if at the same time D&D needs a retail presence to remain relevant as a tabletop rpg, Wotc should have to cover for...

Pathfinder 1E Question for the Paizo folks regarding D&D's state of today

Thank you for your answer Erik. Could you elaborate on this a bit more please? I mean, could you develop your thoughts as you did with the previous question? How and why do you think shifting the D&D business to the digital realm would help Hasbro achieve higher profit goals?

Pathfinder 1E Question for the Paizo folks regarding D&D's state of today

Some time ago Erik Mona insinuated over here that the strong and healthy presence of the D&D brand in the market was fundamental for the well-being of the tabletop rpg industry. I am curious if Paizo retains the same opinion as of today. I am also curious what would they think for that matter...

3 reasons why the design team shouldn't visit ENWorld

Pathfinder is the deal and I think 2011 should be the third year. Correct me if I am wrong. But alas, time is mostly relative. I guess the real test for you guys will come when you will find out that you need to promote the update of Pathfinder and especially when/if some competitor for your...

3 reasons why the design team shouldn't visit ENWorld

Exactly, like trying to launch a subscription based model for their business. I guess, if it were not for this Paizo would rather still be handling Dungeon and Dragon. But as things eventually turned out, this turn of events was rather for the better for Paizo.

3 reasons why the design team shouldn't visit ENWorld

This guy is 100% correct. The pathfinder business is in the phase described by his last paragraph: "One last comment". Of course Paizo marketed Pathfinder's launch as an open community test and this proved to be a brilliant marketing move. But this guy talks from a totally different perspective.

3 reasons why the design team shouldn't visit ENWorld

In their forums Wotc are regarded as "the masters". As such it is harder for them to engage in efficient high level fan reaching marketing. This plus the gleemax outcome uncertainty -or any kind of outcome uncertainty. A healthy relationship with Enworld is a safe anchor point for any backlash...
