Shaky Cam - Your Thoughts? (Forked Thread: The new Star Trek movie is...)

I rather think a big problem is that some people think it covers up bad film-making, just because it is a "trendy" technique, when, in fact, it rather exacerbates existing problems. It's like CGI - when you don't really notice it, while still being there, the effect is working well. If you...

improving Second Wind (Forked Thread: House Rule: Second Effort)

The more I think about it, the more I think you're right - a good benchmark is probably WotC's "Sacrifice to Caiphon" feat from the Star Warlock article - that feat pegs regaining a totally missing encounter power at 1 hp/power level. Even if we say double that for a power that actually hit...

Do fantasy and paganism go together, or should they stay separate?

Huh, never seen or heard of a game store like that - I only see the boardgame/comic/gaming combos, usually. And book stores tend to put RPG material close to Fantasy & Sci-Fi sections. *shrug* But I don't really care anyway. Cheers, LT.

improving Second Wind (Forked Thread: House Rule: Second Effort)

I think the way to make it more viable is to follow the line that a second wind is "catching your breath". It's a fall-back you use when things go bad, so you try to get back into the game by taking a break - it is a mini-rest. As such, it should work like a rest and give back more than just...

Shaky Cam - Your Thoughts? (Forked Thread: The new Star Trek movie is...)

This sums up how I think of it - a cinematic device to convey action and motion. And in Star Trek (and BSG), I thought it was used pretty well and the film (and the series) would be worse without it. Hence I like the effect (as long as it is used in moderation, but that's true for everything)...

Shaky Cam - Your Thoughts? (Forked Thread: The new Star Trek movie is...)

Forked from: The new Star Trek movie is... This stood out to me. Nowadys, shaky cams are actually pretty common in film and television - but what do people think of it? I'll comment on my personal view a bit later, when some responses trickle in. Cheers, LT.

Trek Spoiler Spectacular! (Forked Thread: The new Star Trek movie is...)

Actually, it made sense - Pike ordered raising shields as he realised it wasn't a rescue mission. This implies that the other ships haven't raised their shields... and without shields Star Trek ships were always pretty fragile - and the ships probably all blew up after single hits. Cheers, LT.

Fluff Time! Share your Warlock Curses!

Seeing your avatar... a warlock's curse should totally be "I'm watching you, Focker!" like in "Meet the Parents"! :D Cheers, LT.

    Monk Preview

I hope that the Ki-flavour bleeds back into the Psionic power source a bit - late 3.5 dialled up the pseudoscience-y psionics up quite a bit. With the monk, it could go towards more of a "mind-over-matter" & "meditation"-style esotericism, at least for some classes (the Psion can stay all...

    Tell us about yourself...

Also: Different countries have different education systems. The German school system required you finish 13 years of school until you're allowed to study. Add 3 years for bachelor... and you have 16 years for "just" a bachelor - or 16+ if you attempt something longer (like a Master or the German...

Rate the new Star Trek Film

That was really surprising. I liked how the film really showed that it was "the road not taken", yet some things seemed to be destined to happen. And a time-travel story without reset button! I liked Urban's McCoy, though I wish we had seen more of him. Quinto's Spock was great - he was a...

Can a DM have a PC

Actually, we run KotS with a smaller group as well (3 PCs) - just bump the PC level by 2, it compensates (more or less) for the difference in numbers, though in that case the group should either have a dedicated leader (as a smaller group will draw more fire focussed on single group members)...

    Improving Wizard Implement Features

This is a very cool idea - I think every at-will should get about 2 rider-effects, so every at-will is fitting for at least two implements - should give a nice variety. Some ideas: Cloud of Daggers Orb: You can move the cloud one square after the attack. Tome: Allies take no damage from the...

    I like 4e, but I miss... Forked Thread: I like 3E, but I miss...

...I miss: OGL, Paizo adventures and a bit of "out-of-the-box" thinking with powers (though the newer books, i.e. PHB2 and AP, books seem to be more willing to do that). Cheers, LT.

A Question for the 25 and under crowd - What have you read?

Read: Howard, Tolkien, Moorcock, Rowlings, Jordan, Mieville, Pratchett. Though I don't care a lot for Howard's and Rowlings' books. Authors that I feel are missing from the list are: Butcher and Gaiman - both are big - and I like their books a lot. Cheers, LT.

I currently play x edition and I do or don't buy 3pp stuff. A POLL

I generally allow 3PP stuff, it it's good and I like it. But for 4E, I haven't seen a lot of good stuff yet - certainly nothing on the level of the Monte's Book of Eldritch Might (especially 2 & 3). Cheers, LT:

The new Star Trek movie is...

Have you seen the film yet? At least I haven't, so I can't really comment on that. But the "exploring humanity" issue is one that really blossomed during TNG. TNG addressed a lot of themes in a very forward fashion (for its time), TOS was much less about sending a message - the biggest message...

MM2 sneak peak / new warforged art

While this is a profound and probably very true insight (and I for one would love it), I also think that the idea of a "book of monsters" is just too much of an established and memorable trope to chuck it out. But then, the DM-focussed books (Open Grave, Manual of the Planes et al.) are pretty...
