    Spring's D&D Release Will Be Ship-Themed

For someone named "Vecna," you sure spill a lot of secrets... ;-) Thanks for the heads up, BTW!

Worlds of Design: “Old School” in RPGs and other Games – Part 1 Failure and Story

That's not apples to apples, because Hodor/Joffrey/Ned/Khal/Walder/Oberyn/Ramsay/TooManytoList weren't nameless orc minions, either; they were often fleshed-out characters. Honestly, I quit watching because it was like a character abattoir. That and the rapes didn't help either. Main point...

Worlds of Design: “Old School” in RPGs and other Games – Part 1 Failure and Story

Considering that (in Crit Role, at least) in their first campaign, EVERY single character who died (from a current player) was resurrected, I'd say the big death in their second campaign was the first time they've ever dealt with that for real, and I was glad to see it - it was a good 'teachable...

Worlds of Design: “Old School” in RPGs and other Games – Part 1 Failure and Story

They might not all be "PCs", but the fact there are articles called "The top 100 deaths on Game of Thrones" is pretty telling in and of itself for a show that's only been around for 7 seasons. :) Named characters didn't die that quickly on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and that's a show that killed...

D&D General Turgenev's Friday Freebie Maps

Tim, I don't know if it's slipped my mind to say this until now, but thank you for this fantastic contribution to the community. Both you and Dyson Logos are phenomenal for the work you do, and I apologize for not noticing it sooner. Thank you again.

How often do your players multiclass?

Thinking back: Campaign I ran for a year to 11th level: 1 character out of 5. Campaign I played in for a year, to 13th level: 2 characters out of 4. Campaign I'm playing in now: 0 people. Campaign I'm running soon: 1st level, still too early to tell. It's all over the map, really. Considering...

Worlds of Design: “Old School” in RPGs and other Games – Part 1 Failure and Story

There's a vast difference between having strong opinions in a Tabletop Gaming column versus having political power, and that's where I'll end that thought. :)

Worlds of Design: “Old School” in RPGs and other Games – Part 1 Failure and Story

...and therefore, Rope Trick is a healing spell. :) Sorry, joke from another thread... I like Lew's articles specifically because they generate lively debate, not of the ever-present "Sharpshooter Feat is overpowered / Class X is underpowered" variety. Nonetheless, he's got a point in that...

Hobby Games: It Was a Very Good Year

This is a point that many fans (but not a lot of the publishers) sometimes miss. The hobby gets tens of thousands of new RPG players now (Millions? I have no idea) between 2015 and 2018; those people are getting bored of D&D and looking for something different in 2019 or 2020. Not all stay, they...

    D&D 5E (2014) Using a quarterstaff one handed?

NECROMANCY! :) In the Pathfinder Playtest, they went this same route, except that they made quarterstaves 1d4 one-handed and 1d8 two-handed. You could do that and model the Gandalf clip a bit better. Due to the lack of strong grip, you can still beat people with it, but you'll do very little...

Worlds of Design: “Old School” in RPGs and other Games – Part 1 Failure and Story

Do you think these gradation of outcomes is out of a desire for a story to arise from its play result? Lew's point seems to be that story to his definition of 'Old School' is incidental; it's fine if you can make one out of what happened, but if you can't, then that's fine too, because the...

Worlds of Design: “Old School” in RPGs and other Games – Part 1 Failure and Story

That said, I think 'Iron Man Gaming' has a place, but for convention one-shots, as well as regular campaigns, DMs should bill them as such up front. As an established gamer, I'd try something like that, on a lark, and see how well I did. Hell, I didn't cry and run home from any of those multiple...

Worlds of Design: “Old School” in RPGs and other Games – Part 1 Failure and Story

There's been a lot of discussion of Critical Role and other streaming shows as contributing to the popularity of D&D lately (past 3 years or so). I wonder what their fans' opinions would have been had they LOST their final fight with Vecna's Ascended Avatar at the campaign's end? There are a lot...

    D&D 5E (2014) Does Rope Trick Heal?

I don't know if Rope Trick heals, but reading this thread is giving me 1 level of exhaustion. :) :rimshot:

If you were able to design your own version of D&D, how would you do it?

Bad Kitty! (gets water bottle) If it plays anything like the fantasy gumshoe I remember (the one with the beggar-kids) then it should be a lot of fun, can't wait.

"How do I beat the Matt Mercer effect?"

"The Other Matt" doesn't bug me either; it's the nature of the hobby to have strong opinions emerge throughout. I'm just glad Mr. Mercer and their crew recognize their role as ambassadors of the hobby and try to do their best to pass on good habits to others -- whether it's DM advice, good...

    Mearls on RPG Art

It's axiomatic in everything we do, however. A good picture is worth a proverbial thousand words, as good art can evoke several paragraphs worth of "imagine a world where..." text. One look at something like https://paizo.com/image/content/LegacyOfFire/PZO9019-GnollAmbush.jpg for the Legacy of...

    D&D 5E (2014) Does Rope Trick Heal?

Also, if the entire party has used all their hit dice to heal previously, which is not uncommon for a first through fourth level party, rope trick definitely will have nothing to contribute to healing. :)
