D&D 5E (2014) 5e's new gender policy - is it attracting new players?

D&D and roleplaying in general has always been, at least in my experience, as open and inclusive as it gets. I have not noticed any changes in the types and numbers of new players being attracted to the game due to the gender comments.

Unearthed Arcana Unearthed Arcana Cut and Paste

Hey guys. I figured someone else might encounter the same issue, so I took the liberty of converting all the UA pdfs into Word files, so they can be easily copy-pasted for personal purposes (I think this shouldn't involve any licence issues. If it does, please give me a heads-up and I'll remove...

Unearthed Arcana Unearthed Arcana Cut and Paste

That's a relatively common problem with pdfs, particularly those created with Mac OS X 10.10.4 Quartz (you can check which version was used to create the pdf by going into the Properties menu. Quick check shows that the UA pdfswere indeed created with that version). From what I understand, this...

Dark Sun: Where are the Fans?

I always enjoyed how the scarcity of otherwise commonplace resources such as water or even metal completely changed the way PCs had to think and act, and how the very environment was a challenge (sometimes quite literally, considering an oasis can be a predatory beast). It's been years since...

Here Come The PRESTIGE CLASSES! Plus Rune Magic!

I like having Prestige Classes back. I agree they went overboard with them in 3e, but I still like the concept, and considering 5e's design philosophy so far, I'm confident they'll do a good job with them.

    D&D 5E (2014) 4d6 Drop the Lowest Etiquette

We use 4d6 drop lowest, 8 times, assign as preferred. Once or twice we've used point buy, but 4d6 is our usual method. No re-rolls, not on stats, not on HDs. Sort of defeats the purpose of rolling in the first place, I think.

D&D 5E (2014) How many combats does your 5e group typically have between long rests, if you have at least one?

It's usually 2-3 (there's a lot of times without any combat between long rests, though), typically with one being a filler and two being very intense. It can vary, but that seems to be a good average.

D&D 5E (2014) Short Rests: How many does your group get/take between long rests, on average?

Varies greatly in our group, but often very few -if any-. Sometimes it's due to the way I DM; action scenes tend to be extremely long and allow for very little pause. But most of the times it's just the playstyle of the group; my players very rarely take short rests.

Edition Aroma: Which one smells the best?

Yeah, the reprints have a much better smell than the originals. My old ones have lost most of their smell, though.

Edition Aroma: Which one smells the best?

We all know smell is a critical part of nerdom; MTG boosters have some kind of addictive gas that hooks you on the scent so you have to buy more, for example. This happens with D&D editions, too, each one having its own characteristic smell, from the "this has gone through way too many hands"...

D&D 5E (2014) Survivor 5e- What Core Class Needs to Go

Warlock. Even though the very idea of playing a Druid gives me skin rashes (bathing IS part of nature, you bird-poop-on-beard weirdo! Stop going through my trash cans!) and I have a general dislike for shaolin-type Monks, those two classes seem to have well-defined roles, even if they could...

    D&D 5E (2014) How fast do you play D&D?

Our main current campaign, set in Planescape, has seen a single level up for the PCs since it began two years ago. Then again, it began in 15th level. Regular schedule is one game every 3-4 weeks, lasting 5 to 8 hours. Sometimes we can hit a dry spell and play barely once every 2 months, other...

D&D 5E (2014) How Many in your Group?

My group has remained at 6 players since 2008, plus myself. The group started in 1995 with 4 players, then grew to 12 between 2003 and 2006, shrunk back to 3-5 until 2008, when it reached its current composition. Since they are all lazy bastards, I've been the DM the entire time, save for a...

D&D 5E (2014) Why do you play 5e? What game did you come from?

I started playing at age 10, in 1995 with AD&D 2e (though I had prior encounters with stuff like Dragon Strike before. Some classmates and me would also often create games inspired by stuff like Zelda and the D&D cartoon before we formally knew what roleplaying was, so we were primed to become...

    D&D 5E (2014) Which Would You Rather Buy/Use?

    A. Though I write my own adventures and settings most of the times, I also like to play in published settings; I prefer a hefty world book filled with hooks and inspiring ideas than a module focused on a specific adventure. Plus I love collecting campaign books in general.

Excellent initiative, Morrus. You are doing a great service to the D&D community as a whole.

D&D 5E (2014) Hit points -- how do you roll?

We roll the dice and live with the consequences. A couple of campaigns ago we had a guy roll 1's and 2's pretty much straight all the way up to 7th level. He was like two well-placed greataxes away from the afterlife. Even considering that, our games have very low rates of PC deaths, with...

Cultural Appropriation in role-playing games (draft)

There has to be a middle point between "Gleefully stereotyping entire cultures out of hate and sense of superiority" and "Not eating sushi unless Japanese".
