Best Way to Learn a New Game?

This. Sometimes I read the rulebook first. I learned Savage Worlds by reading then GMing a session for a friend and myself... Would have preferred to just play to learn. Much more fun.

If you like Doctor Who and D&D...

+1 Avoid paradox-inducing plots until you've played time travel for a while, I think.

Photo of the Very First Braunstein - Almost

According to that photo, four out of every seven geeks wear glasses. ;) This is a great find. Love pieces of the history of our hobby(ies)!

Honor + Intrigue Now Available in PDF

Congrats and good luck with the launch! Was/is there any kind of preview? I'm intrigued but would like to see some kind of "test drive" or sample character or something to get a feel for the mechanics. (I see they're described as simple... but I'd like to know a bit more.)

Weapon and Armour profs in the Holmes basic.

Would love to see your friend's drawings once they're done... if they're shareable at all.

Weapon and Armour profs in the Holmes basic.

The assumption was very medieval weapons. trancejeremy has hit the nail on the head with some good quotes... saved me pulling out my Holmes book ;P If your friend needs specifics for fighting men, think longsword, shields, axes, maybe hammers if they were dwarves (though I think axes were more...

Let's get waaaay head of ourselves. :D

Assuming the game is great... I'd love to see leather bound core books again. A friend of mine in university had the 3.5e PHB in leather (with the bookmarks...) and it was soooo sexy. He had another copy for loaning out and table use... but he'd sit there with the leather one and it just looked...

Players: Do you wear/carry "props" to the game?

I always find a leather (or fake) notebook for spell lists when playing a caster. I've given out props as a GM quite a bit... but other than the above example, can't really think of any I've done as a player. Might have to rectify that situation soon!

RPG Gaming Survey – YOUR Help Needed!

Saw this on your blog yesterday evening. Downloaded the spreadsheet--will have it to you soon.

    Upset about another edition!

This analogy doesn't work. You're talking about updates to the same program... 3e and 4e are different games. 4e and 5e will also be different games. Are you upset when your favourite band releases two albums in one year? Nope. You buy both, or just one if only one sounds good.

    Upset about another edition!

How many hours a month do you game with that $200 investment? The ROI on a set of RPG books is quite high, for me. Recently I purchased the Savage Worlds Deluxe book--that was, about, $40 (can't recall after store discount.) I've played two games totaling up to about 10-12 hours. I've also...

[GM Question] How much setting background for players?

I'm not in his bi-weekly one, but one he just kicked off. Very much looking forward to the con and his game there, too! Sounds like you need a job with "gaming days" as part of your PTO package ;)

[GM Question] How much setting background for players?

Love your Le Ballet D'Alcier wiki! A friend just started running Flashing Blades for our monthly game and told us to check out your wiki a few weeks ago. I think ultimately I'm going with lightweight, broad brush strokes to get them started. I've considered running a second game in the same...

[GM Question] How much setting background for players?

Thanks for the extra advice! I think I may just answer the 20 questions (I had forgotten about them!) and give that to my players to give them the basics and the feel, then set the tone with my narration and description in the first session.

[GM Question] How much setting background for players?

Thanks. I have one player who GMs a lot as well and he loves to research... so anything I give him would be read cover to cover, I think. The other two players, though, are casual gamers who love a good story and would read, as you say, 1,000 words ;) Cheers!

[GM Question] How much setting background for players?

Question for all the GMs who create settings (or heavily modify published ones) for whatever system and genre: How much background / common knowledge do you write up or tell your players before you begin playing? Question for players: How much background / common knowledge do you want the GM to...

    Two Games, One World... Non-Fantasy

Thanks for the input ;) Any specific challenges I should know about? I'm not sure if I'll get this game off the ground or not... but we'll see.

    War Hammer 40k

Looks like it is... Warhammer 40,000 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia You can get a copy of the newer rulebook pretty easily online (used or new) and your models are going to be fine. It's already been mentioned but if you like 40k's universe you MUST play Dark Heresy/Rogue...

    War Hammer 40k

I had a great time playing 40k. It's a lot of fun and scratches the tactics-nerd itch in me. Eventually I had to drop playing it because I didn't have enough free time for RPGs and wargaming and work and being a dad... oh well. If you have free time (remember a normal 1000pt battle will take...
