    4E DMG...good...bad...ugly

Funny, I couldn't bring myself to read more than a few pages. It may be full of good advice for new dms but to me it simply lacks substance. Maybe it just needed more pages. Things like magic items should have been here too, if only to leave room for everything that's missing in the phb.

4E D&D - Are you playing already (or ever)?

tried for a few sessions - unlikely to play it again - thank The Internets i didn't buy the books! :D I haven't had much time to play lately but 4e would be my last choice. I was burned out on 3e, but despite a few improvements 4e is clearly not the follow-up I expected. It's far too...

    Mearls: Druid a Striker/Controller (maybe?)

The only place i read that was here in the enworld forum. Did a designer actually mention it? Controller seems weird for a ranger but again, i'm not sure what this role is. It seems to overlap with both striker and leader anyway.

    Mearls: Druid a Striker/Controller (maybe?)

agreed. The stereotypical fantasy barbarian fits the meatshield role better than any other, even if conan had some rogue skills. I think the ranger was originallly meant to be primal instead of martial. The primal striker should be whatever class that gets the shapechanging abilities. I...

Promises, promises...what WotC said, and actually did, with 4E

That's nitpicking. Sure, wizards got some at-wills and encounter powers and some spells are now rituals. But the point is, they still have vancian casting (by your definition) and most of its aspects were ported to other classes, except the memorisation part (which does make sense for martial...

Promises, promises...what WotC said, and actually did, with 4E

that... and the lack of flexibility (not being able to use a power twice, no matter the level), not to mention the simulationist issues caused by vancian combat. I’ve never liked dnd’s quirky magic system and I guess all those who applauded when wizards announced they would get rid of it...

Demons, Devils and Celestials! Oh My!

Like others have said, demons are popular. They certainly were in AD&D1 and many players missed them at the beginning of AD&D2. Even when they came back with the silly names, many complained that dnd had given in to the religious crowd. What bugs me in 4e isn’t demons & devils, there aren't...

    A flaw in the system

yeah, then the hero goes to the Training Tower Lookout and achieves the 7th super-cosmo-chakra-bankai, then he comes back and the villain goes all "NO! this can't be!" for one full episode and gets his ass kicked... :yawns: I don't mind unpredictable results in a game but i'm not sure the anime...

D&D 4e is pure win and I'll tell you why...

Precisely. In your experience, in mine* and apparently that of many others here, the average girl gamer is actually less ugly than the average male gamer. Implying that most female dnd players are too repulsive to even play with while it’s ok to game with guys who are potentially just as...

Do You Prefer to Play One of the Four Primary Base Classes (Clr, Ftr, Rog, Wiz)?

No. I would if these so called primary classes were actually generic and covered more archetypes. Also, multiclassing would have to be much more viable and flexible than 3e or 4e multiclassing. Something à la True20, I guess. It depends a lot on the edition you play, too. The wizard used to be...

Forked Thread: Rate WotC as a company: 4e Complete?

Somehow I agree with what you’re saying, this actually one of the reasons I dislike 4e. The classes play too much alike for me and I just don’t believe in these roles. More generally I think fantasy concepts and archetypes should inspire the game mechanics, not the other way around. But to get...

But that won't make the game more complete. Especially if the concept was perfectly valid and only the implementation was underbalanced.

Forked Thread: Rate WotC as a company: 4e Complete?

The thing is, even if you consider the new classes as a suitable replacement, the first 3e phb alone still had more classes, 10 of which were legacy classes. That’s more than any previous lineup, so the sorcerer didn’t really take another class’s place, he used the existing wizard spell list and...

Yeah, mean bastards them  Good catch. I'm surprised they didn't even get some nasty elemental form in 4e.

Forked Thread: Rate WotC as a company: 4e Complete?

Actually, I will question this :D I’ve seen many more golems, frost giants and metallic dragons in play than psionics. I don’t care much for dnd legacy, but metallic dragons are certainly more "iconic" and better fit the flavour of most dnd campaigns than psionics or many lame and obscure...

    Rate WotC as a company

I don't know about wotc’s other activities but I really don’t like the direction dnd has taken: :1: Marketing considerations affecting game design too much. - Replacing old stuff with more popular options is ok. But I don’t buy that basic classes, monsters or spell types were only delayed...

What PC races are in your 4E group!

I'm not very familiar with AE, but I am not too fond of the "alien" vibe I get from the races. As you might have guessed, my distaste for furries doesn't help either. As for the Hu-Charad yes, they are a bit too atypical for me. I don't think all giants should be dumb brutes but a somewhat...

Green Ronin not signing GSL (Forked Thread: Doing the GSL. Who?)

Fewer publishers surely means less glut but I don't see what "exploiting the holes" has to do with it. If anything, the tons of "fully compatible" material that became obsolete as soon as wotc published an "official" version caused a lot more glut. Also, If wotc wouldn't touch some niches...
