    Presitge Class Theory...

As we've heard Saga and Tome of Battle are previews of 4th Edition. In Saga classes have access to 20 some talents spread out over 3-5 talent trees. More potent talents have prerequisite weaker talents from the same tree... Something interesting occurred to me looking over Saga. The Jedi is...

Agreed about Kenson and agreed about OGL.

    Will Favored Classes Remain?

According to Schaefer's new blog, here, favored class is essentially dead. It is replaced with racial "special traits" that are best suited for a single class, but not useless to other classes.

I think we've stumbled across a new law akin to Godwin's: The amount of fun derived from any given RPG session is inversely proportional to the amount of work the GM has put into the economics of the game world.

Multiclassing: "Any combo, any level, always works."

The context was this: each WotC staffer at GenCon had one secret about 4th Edition they could reveal if asked. The lightning round question was: What was your GenCon secret? Answer: "multi-classing: any combo, any level, always works."

The most boring Star Wars game I've ever played in involved the GM going over the tariffs, taxes, loan repayment conditions, bribes to locals, and then finally splitting the income from a delivery to a world on the outer rim. That's not role-playing, that's accounting.

The point he was making is that once you drop by the local town to sell off those swords, that merchant doesn't follow you around. He doesn't get his own sourcebook, he isn't likely to be a returning npc, you're not going to invite him on adventures, and you're not going to drop you 10th-level...

    Disdain for new fantasy

Yeah, Legend of the Overfiend is an f'ed up anime. It's also gross negligence on your part to assume that a sinlge pron anime is a decent stand in for all anime. Try watching anime without penises. Record of Lodoss War. Berserk. Rune Soldier. Legend of Crystania. Bastard! El-Hazard. InuYasha...

    Disdain for new fantasy

I am an old timer grognard. I loved AD&D, I loved 2nd Edition, I loved 3rd Edition, I loved 3.5 Edition, and from what I'm hearing I'll love 4th Edition. As an added bonus, I love anime. I think the "grognards hate anime" argument is like so many others, it is a generalization that happens to...

Multiclassing: "Any combo, any level, always works."

The best way to fix the caster level problem for multi-classing is to retool character level to be based on total xp earned rather than total class levels. This will increase the levels available in multi-classing. Instead of 11th-level characters being 10th-level fighter/1st-level sorcerer...

Warforged: Like them or loathe them?

Other than the fact that no where is it mentioned that Warforged are listed as a PHB1 race, and the playtest articles are for a converted Eberron game, it's fairly obvious that they will exist, but in the Eberron setting, not the default setting.

    Will Favored Classes Remain?

According to the new podcast concerning multi-classing, "any combo, any level, always works." So I can only imagine that favored class will go the way of Thac0.

There was also a comment about scaling the non-caster classes up, while scaling the caster classes (specifically the wizard) back. The multi-classing rules are what interest me the most. I can't wait to see how that's going to work. The system in 3.x is simply busted. Oh, and the races/classes...

Multi-classing: "any combo, any level, always works." Action points are core. Do different stuff than Star Wars force points and Eberron AP. Social interactions: Multiple checks between multiple characters (including back and forth) for a single social interaction, instead of a single roll as now.

Adjacent system = talent trees. Overlapping feat = two feats that... well, overlap. Two feats that are either functionally equivalent, or that are basically the same.

D&D 4E Killing Time Before 4e Comes Out

The last D&D campaign I played in used 1st Edition rules with the proficiencies/skills from 2nd Edition. You should have seen me go cross-eyed when the DM reminded me that Elves can't advance passed 11th level Magic-User, or Dwarves can't be paladins. Wow, I didn't think 1st Edition was racist...

    D&D 4E Gaming, Gamers, Dollars, and 4E

I've played D&D since I was 8 years old. I'm 31 now. I will buy the 3 core books. For sure, no matter what. I will likely not purchase a single other book put out for it. Just as I haven't for 3.0 (only the 3 core) or 3.5 (still don't own a single 3.5 book). I buy these because I play but...

D&D 4E 4e Special Ability PER Encounter stinks...

It's all about the record keeping. It's much easier to say x times per encounter than it is to keep track of all spells, class abilities, racial abilities, spell like abilities, etc with actual time. Per encounter: ok, I've used my Smite for this combat. What else can I do? Strict time: ok, my...
