improving Second Wind (Forked Thread: House Rule: Second Effort)

I was thinking of allowing Second Wind to give +4 to all defenses, rather than +2, especially since I tend to double (or get rid of) certain monster abilities, if I think they're too fiddle-y. A minor change, but nice if you're surrounded. I'm not sure if I want Second Wind to be as potent as...

    House Rule: Second Effort

An interesting idea, but let's compare Greater Effort to Second Wind, using say, the Cleric's Level 1 Encounter Healing Strike. Second Wind gets you a +2 to all defenses, and you get to spend a surge. Greater Effort let's you, for a minor action and a standard action (and really, depending on...

    House Rule: Second Effort

I agree that Second Wind is often unused as it is. I also worry about odd exceptions, where you have an Encounter power that does 4W damage, versus an At-Will which does 1W + some effect, though maybe the lost healing balances out. Finally, I believe there's a high level Warlord Utility (and...

    House Rule: Second Effort

Interesting. I would say it uses a Healing Surge. How does it work with Dwarves? Because my original thought is: Standard Action to "Second Effort" and as a part of that action, you get to attack with an expended Encounter Power. However, that seems a bit crazy with Dwarves. As is, their...

What Have We Done About Solos?

A very good point. Alternately, you can throw some ability on top of the hydra to encourage it to attack multiple targets or to charge past the defender and get into the back ranks. The Salamander Firetail's Trail of Fire looks fun in that regard: standard move action, but everyone adjacent to...

Errors from previous editions which got repeated.

cmbarona makes a good point about combat and non-combat feats, though I think the number of non-combat feats that currently exist would need to be increased significantly. As such, it might not be that big a deal: there aren't that many feats you can pick! Unless you're REALLY intent on being...

Errors from previous editions which got repeated.

This. I want to give my player's magical items, since the powers are fun, but I don't want to have to worry about giving too little. (Or too much.)

    Dominate?

Heh, sadistic being the key word there. While I understand that you probably want a RAW approach: if the rules forbid something as relatively trivial as an Encounter power being used by the Dominating monster, I don't think they intended Domination monsters to be able to suicide a character.

Errors from previous editions which got repeated.

Aren't those both from Martial Power? While I don't begrudge Wizards selling their splat books (and I own the PHB2, and will probably pick up the MM2), if the core fighter options are genuinely underpowered, then I think they should be errata'd. That's what good game companies do: they fix...

Anyone else not feel "the grind"

Well, that costs a feat, it's for a single power, and it's during a rest. Even if the former two conditions were acceptable, the last one kills my intent. Though maybe that's a good point: maybe it'd be better if this applied to only encounter powers, or if you only got to select one or two...

Anyone else not feel "the grind"

Has anyone allowed players to pick TWO abilities per 'pick' so that they would have two Level 3 encounter powers? They can still only use one Level 3 encounter power per encounter, however. I say two because some classes like the Cleric or Ranger would not benefit if you could pick from all...

    D&D 4E New 4E DM - A couple questions

The plain Flip-Mat works out alright. It helps to unfold it and maybe stick something on the creases so it lays flat while you play. You can draw on either side so you can pre-draw two encounters. You can get Expo markers for cheap ($5 for 5, 2 black, 1 r/g/b) at a local store. Though the...

    Trolls!

I like the suggestion that trolls be vulnerable to some random type of damage. Maybe there's a reason they're vulnerable to psychic damage, and this could be true throughout your campaign, or maybe it's true for a single batch of trolls. Maybe trolls are elementally aligned and are harmed by...

D&D 4E Any body have a 4e style disarm move?

I assume these are options when you have a +2 bonus from some advantageous situation? If so, does anyone think it'd be 'broken' (or unfun) to allow any PC to perform the Trip and Knockdown maneuvers whenever they want? (At the cost of a standard action.) I'd also implement the "one size...

Anyone else not feel "the grind"

Bonuses? Extra damage? Why did the player playing a Dragonborn Sorcerer spend his Encounter power "Thunderslam" to try and knock over a column onto the Blackscale Bruiser? Well, partially because he's clearly into using the environment, but also because it did lots of damage. If I just said...

Anyone else not feel "the grind"

I just began a new campaign with people who are new to RPGs. I had them hit level 2 after the first two fights, and I think I'll bump them to three at the start of the next session. Then, they'll level every session or so until level 7, where it'll slow down a bit to every two sessions or so...

    DMG Nentir Valley

Thanks for the mini-review. I think I'll give it a look, especially since I don't mind reworking certain aspects. Dilemmas regarding what to do as the walls are being breached, and a dragon is razing buildings and so on sounds fun, even if the dilemmas aren't too terribly complex...

    DMG Nentir Valley

Is the Red Hand of Doom worth mining ideas from if I can get it cheaply? Since I figured that the campaign I recently started might have an evil army!!! segment to it. However, the campaign is 4E, so I'm interested in the plot rather than the numbers. The plot doesn't have to be great, but...

Who wouldnt take toughness and the +2 DEF feats?

I think there's a lack of good feat competition, which is unfortunate. I know when I was looking at feats for my Dwarven Hybrid Cleric, I would totally grab Polearm Gambit, Uncanny Dodge, Deadly Axe, Dwarven Durability, and probably something that wasn't the defense feats. With my Human...

Does anyone actually need the DMG?

A bit before I pre-ordered the 4E Gift Set, I looked through the 3.0 DMG and thought to myself (cheap punk that I am): "Do I really need the 4.0 DMG, especially since it's going to be lacking magic items?" There is some crunch in the 4.0 DMG, and given the cost of the Gift Set versus the MM and...
