    Gritty gone?

I certainly agree with the notion that setting is an important part of gritty... as can be exemplified by the fact I love "gritty" but I think PCs should die rarely, and if they do, it should be in a plot significant manner. Another example of "gritty": it's when your PCs run from a [big] mob...

    Gritty gone?

I do enjoy "gritty", not that I've played in too many gritty games... but I think house-ruling 4E might be possible... Possibly remove the teleport effects (or alternately, just use the four magic-less core classes), reduce the amount of HP damage you can sustain, and possibly introduce an...

Warlock's Curse, Fey Pact and a Bag o'Rats...

Probably line of sight or all that jazz: Anyhow, you can just say that an enemy must have "sufficient life force" to be harnessed for the teleport. House-ruling that the target must be small size or above to teleport is probably not going to cause many problems.

    Warlock's Curse / Hunter's Quarry

IMO, I don't feel any of the above suggestions sufficiently justify the ranger's "quarry" business. Sure, if he's 5 feet away from you, that makes sense. But what about when the closest target is 15 feet away, and your desired target is 30 feet away, and there's twenty feet between the two of...

    Warlock's Curse / Hunter's Quarry

I do think this is good game design, however, unless the closest target is attacking you, or within 5' of the ideal target (going perpendicular to you... if that makes sense, not necessarily within 5' but within 5' on a single axis) it seems hard to justify. I'd be tempted to try the "Hunter's...

    Warlock's Curse / Hunter's Quarry

I have to agree with SoulStorm. I am, generally, very positive about 4E. However, I need a good justification for these types of abilities. This feels like another, "why can't two fighters mark the same target?" situation... something I'm going to have to house rule. :p

    The Cleric Pregen

I love clerics, and I love plate-wearing warrior-priests. Of course, concievably that concept can be covered by any class (or combo thereof) or talent tree that doesn't shoot too many laser beams.

Camping: It does a body good!

Indeed. Maybe you've got a few minor cuts, or a bloody nose. "First blood" may have been drawn, but it's not the end of the fight. D&D has always been like this. The same rationales I was using in previous editions of D&D, can be used now, in some ways, it's actually more consistent. In...

    Please test Grapple

Quoted for truth. Though I do hope big monsters get a bonus. The small/medium difference I'm less concerned with.

    D&D 4E Review of 4E from a Playtester

That's good to hear. I'm not a fan of "rez magic", but recognizing death and its place in epic level D&D is a good thing.

D&D 4E Vote for your favorite 4E PHB cover!

Nice edit. Certainly improves the cover, IMO.

D&D 4E Vote for your favorite 4E PHB cover!

#3 but... Only because the artist seems incapable of drawing humanoids. The human warrior on the first cover looked absolutely retarded, the dragonborn on the second cover also looks pretty retarded... and the human wizard on the second cover doesn't look too good either. If the humans and...

How Would You Design Fourth Edition?

Couple things I would do differently: 3E-style Skills except: make less useful skills cost less... possibly using 3/2/1 (high-utility/medium/low) or possibly 4/2/1. This is contrary to 4E's stated goal of making things simpler, but whatever. Also, there would be the caveat that the DM is...

Classes ... Much Less Flexible than Advertised

I somewhat agree with you: there's no reason a rogue shouldn't be able to use a club, assuming it doesn't give a mechanical advantage. Then again, a club might fall under "warhammer" or "mace"... should a warrior who's good at bludgeoning opponents be unable to use his special abilities with a...

Classes ... Much Less Flexible than Advertised

Why? If it gives your rogue a feat-worthy mechanical advantage under the new rule set... then why not? It allows you your concept, and keeps the game balanced.

    Indeed.

    Social Powers?

The idea does have merit, and I would like to see something like this. Though I'd have to say DM discretion wins out and/or it's optional. Makes me think of Mal converting Jayne. :p Conjuring up Firefly is always a good thing.

    D&D 4E The 4E Rogue...love it or hate it?

Good response. I still think/hope that "Tumble" is just your extra-special Tumble, especially if you only have a certain number of "ability" picks. Do you only have a certain number of "ability" picks? If so, you can take "Tumble" to be the REALLY mobile rogue.
