    Book of Vile Darkness!

*in a huff* Well, if you're going to be censorious about it, maybe you should just add :) :) :) :) to the language filter. Aaargh, the man went and did it already!

    Book of Vile Darkness!

While agree that some of the marketing for both the Book of Vile Darkness and Dragon 300 has been distasteful, I'm not convinced that it has been targeted at a younger audience. Could you elaborate on the ways that you feel it has been, Celebrim? For the record, it's likely that I'll buy Vile...

Poll: Rating your D&D game based on criteria in Monte Cook's article in Dragon #300

Say Jester, given your descriptions of your campaigns here and elsewhere on the boards, along with the generally playful and off-the-wall tone of your Story Hour, I can't help but think of film director John Waters. Maybe the poll needs an extra category?

    flamey; ignore (-- Darkness)

As has been said so very many times before, none of us has seen the BoVD yet. Certainly the marketing has sometimes taken a sensational tone, but it's mere speculation to suggest that the actual content of the book is designed for those with immature sensibilities. Couldn't we just wait and see?

    Most likable PrC

personally, I like the arcane trickster, the alienist, and the blade dancer from OA (very portable to a standard D&D campaign if you tone down the wuxia-style jump & tumble bonuses).

(Long) Evil vs. Vile vs. Mature - are they the same?

Very well considered post, Sigil. I think you make an excellent distinction between 'mature' and 'vile' gaming. I would agree that it isn't necessarily the subject matter that makes the style of play vile, but the way that it is handled. For my own taste, even the vilest (i.e. most disgusting...

    "Authenticity" of double weapons

What about a triple club? I think the athachs deserve an exotic weapon all of their own;). You've just given me an idea for a magic weapon for a shamanic society. Many societies use a ritual noisemaker called a bullroarer -- essentially a long cord or rope with a flat piece of stone or wood...

    "Authenticity" of double weapons

Right, and that's why the Dwarven urgosh has never given me pause. It's much easier for me to imagine a swing with the axe blade followed by a stabbing spear attack to an opponent flanking to the rear or the side.

    "Authenticity" of double weapons

I agree that a longer hafted double sword makes more sense, though it would turn the weapon into more of a polearm. The PHB double sword, short blades, longish hilt, looks to be more of a stabbing weapon, though it deals slashing damage.

    "Authenticity" of double weapons

My knowledge of the RL history of weaponry is limited, so I thought I'd ask some of the smart folks here about some of the double weapons included in 3e. Are there historical precedents for the double sword, dire flail, orc double axe and gnome hooked hammer? If so, were they effective martial...

You know what? I think I'm done with XP

The thing that intrigued me most about the Omega World XP awards was the category "Spectacular Failure." If the PCs give it their all, try something especially daring or creative but ultimately foolhardy, they are rewarded the same as they would be for success. Using this as is would probably...

    Least favorite Prc

Here's another example of the break between concept and execution folks have mentioned earlier in the thread. Personally, I love the idea of the Arcane Trickster, but as it stands the ranged legerdemain and impromptu sneak attack are almost gravy when you're already essentially advancing...

    Least favorite Prc

I can't agree with you on this exactly, Rounser. I'd say that the OGL was designed so that there'd be more of everything is being produced for the game, using the official ruleset, than ever before. More PrC's, more monster books, more spells, feats, sourcebooks, etc. There is more to choose...

Another Dragon #300 thread - kill the tie-ins

Don't have Dragon 300 yet, so I can't judge its merits. From what I've read about its contents, it certainly sounds like the product tie-in made it a less memorable centenary issue than 100 & 200. However, I think it's the reliance on themed issues that is at fault more than the product...

put on yer dancin' shoes... I like the Shadow Dancer, and have no problem with Hide in Plain Sight -- it's a supernatural ability, so it feels right to me that it should be uncanny and inexplicable. To understand the Ghost Walker, think Clint Eastwood in Pale Rider. The last guy in the world...

    mm3 monster challenge

Hey, no fair Jester! I had the very same idea, but left it to Sir Edgar to post over here: Ah well, I'm glad you took the initiative. I'll do what I can to keep the thread alive while you're off doing your Kerouac/road picture/running from the law thang.

    Is WOTC/Hasbro mismanaging D&D?

I think what Rune is referring to the following statement, Sir Edgar: Your poll asks about the overall management of D&D by WotC/Hasbro. As it stands, the majority of voters believe that D&D is being mismanaged. However, it does not automatically follow that these voters believe that the...

I must be the only crazy person here....

So that's how it's gonna be, eh? EnWorld, so recently divided, makes it peace to fight a common enemy: gnomes. Well, I for one won't have it! I've got some badger friends that don't take kindly to such talk...

    BoVD Thoughts

This is excellent advice. The ability to make this sort of considered, collective decision about the tone of one's game is a true mark of a mature gamer, regardless of the style of play. My sympathies. Let the air out of their tires on your way out of the session if they can't learn to...

    BoVD Thoughts

I share your concerns here, Furn, about the possibility that WotC may choose to focus too narrowly in this direction. It seems unlikely to me but, as you write, we can only wait and see.
