D&D General D&D 2024 does not deserve to succeed

We've had such a good time, though? ;) Discussions like this online rarely change anyone's mind, but they're helpful for me to reassess my own stances as I participate.

D&D General D&D 2024 does not deserve to succeed

Even the #2 RPG behind D&D has a fraction of the audience, and it's been on the market for over 15 years. I don't think "anywhere near" D&D's popularity needs to be a metric for success. It's not like this in most of the entertainment industry. I can read nonfiction books while everyone else...

D&D 5E (2024) MichaelSomething's Official Statement on the 2014 D&D rules going out of print

Like, you guys know the postage stamps, museum exhibit, Lego sets, young adventurer novels, cookbooks, Fanta flavors (or whoever made the sodas), Funko pops, t-shirts, etc, ... that's all marketing. It doesn't have to be a TV ad to be marketing.

D&D General D&D 2024 does not deserve to succeed

Well yeah. Follow your bliss. Talk to your friends and fellow gamers about the things you enjoy. Honestly, I give my displeasure with Hasbro more attention than it deserves. That's partly because this is my go-to forum, and D&D (the brand) is so important here. But if I'm true to myself, I'd...

D&D General D&D 2024 does not deserve to succeed

Somehow Dragonbane ended up in the background of a Publix commercial. I'm obviously engaged with the hobby, so I see them promoted on forums, conventions, YouTube, Facebook. And I feel like it's my responsibility as a fan to tell my friends about new games and promote them to my players.

WotC How much does Hasbro / WotC impact your feelings towards D&D?

I didn't restate the controversies and anti-fan, anti-employee, and anti-industry issues they've created over the past year and a half. All that stuff makes Hasbro a pretty nasty company to my ethical barometer. So not only is it all that (OGL, Pinkertons, Christmas firings, AI policies...

WotC How much does Hasbro / WotC impact your feelings towards D&D?

I put a 5, realizing I'm in the minority. I'm glad some of you are 1-2s - you're probably not as unhappy as I am with the hobby. Not only is it the scandals, the corporate mindset has taken over design and product development. "We're never going to change the game. There's never going to be a...

D&D General D&D 2024 does not deserve to succeed

Granted, I don't plan to get 2024. I'll take a free copy, look at the SRD, or maybe buy a used copy down the road. So I think it's valuable to discuss options. Can we jump into how Nimble 5E, Tales of the Valiant, and Level Up might also deserve some attention?

D&D 5E (2024) MichaelSomething's Official Statement on the 2014 D&D rules going out of print

Hasbro bought WotC in Sept 1999, so 25 years ago. It's been Hasbro longer than TSR. Time flies. I feel bad about D&D, but that's just me. Like, I don't want to see the books. I've put my copies in storage and I'm doing my best running from third party sources.

D&D General D&D 2024 does not deserve to succeed

Wait. Are we talking about Dungeon Coach? If that's the case, by his own admission he started playing D&D about 5 years ago ("just before the pandemic.") But I'm not going to begrudge a new RPG fan for trying to design their own game. But what IS inexcusable is being completely unread in game...

D&D 5E (2024) MichaelSomething's Official Statement on the 2014 D&D rules going out of print

Here's the thing about the 2014 rules going out of print. It's been the largest print run in the history of RPGs. Those books are going to be flooding the secondary market for pennies on the dollar. As someone who works with books for a living, people rarely throw out books. They sell them in...

D&D 5E (2024) MichaelSomething's Official Statement on the 2014 D&D rules going out of print

Hey, there's no problem with loving what you love. I'm assuming that you like Lego under normal circumstances? That's a part of the fun - not just wanting it because it has the D&D brand on it. Like if I were a stamp collector, maybe I'd want the D&D postal stamps.

"I'm fuzzy on the whole good/bad thing. What do you mean, "bad"?" "Try to imagine all life as you know it stopping instantaneously and every molecule in your body exploding at the speed of light." "Right. That's bad. Okay. All right. Important safety tip. Thanks, Egon."

"Heartbreaker" is a rocker from Led Zeppelin II. Has a great solo from Jimmy Page. Wait. Are we talking about something else?

D&D 5E (2024) MichaelSomething's Official Statement on the 2014 D&D rules going out of print

Yes. I'm aware my complaints about merchandizing sounds like it's a new thing, and I even complain about Star Wars in my post. I do remember Star Wars bubble bath, beach towels, breakfast cereal, and other things that don't start with the letter "B." It's nothing new for D&D or any other...

D&D 5E (2024) MichaelSomething's Official Statement on the 2014 D&D rules going out of print

I'm a fan of playing D&D and other RPGs. I'm not a fan of D&D as brand or lifestyle hobby. I don't care about postal stamps, Funko pops of Venger and the other cartoon characters, tie-ins with Magic the Gathering, cookbooks, D&D Clue or Monopoly, etc. I don't want to be a billboard to promote a...

D&D General D&D 2024 does not deserve to succeed

Even though I backed MCDM/Draw Steel, DC20, & Level Up, I am not really looking at any of them right now. I just don't have the headspace for something new and of medium (or greater) complexity [considering 5e as a baseline complexity.] I've got Dragonbane lined up to start tomorrow. If that...

D&D General D&D 2024 does not deserve to succeed

I backed DC20. Since doing that, I've heard some of Dungeon Coach's design ideas. The guy has been in the hobby for less than 5 years. He's basically played no games besides 5e D&D (maybe he's looked at PF2). Routinely when he's talking to other content creators he's like "oh, I haven't heard...

    One-Shot Post-Mortem-Palooza

I've been inspired to try to dip back into it, maybe with a short story. If and when I finish one, I'll let folks on here know.
