New Design & Development: Paladin Smites!

One word for the new Paladin smites: Ridiculous. How does hitting an enemy give your friends better armor? In what legend or myth did this happen? When did Roland (the legendary model for the Paladin class) hit someone in a way that healed his friends? And "Safeguared Smite"? It sounds like a...

    Renaming the AoO

How about "free attack". As in, stop fighting someone who is still fighting you, and they'll get a free attack on you. Subject to DM discretion, of course. That's it. All the rules that were ever needed. And none of this nonsense about threatened squares, different types of actions, etc.

D&D 4E What would make you decide against 4e?

Just about everything I've heard about 4th edition, both fluff and crunch, convinces me I won't want to DM it. I'm currently DMing C&C, and am very happy with the way the game runs. I'll probably pick up a PHB, just so I could play in a 4th edition game (if I can't find a C&C or 1st edition game).

Write a letter to your favorite game. . .

Dear D&D, I know you had a rough life, girl. You were kidnapped from your Daddy by people that he trusted, and then sold to an evil old Puritan woman who made you cover up everything she thought was naughty. I know you had such high hopes when she sold you to a group of partying young people...

    Defining its own Mythology

Thing is, nobody on the WOTC design staff is a Tolkien, Vance, Moorcock, Malory, Leiber, Howard, Homer, Snorri Sturluson, or Lovecraft. The ideas D&D appropriated were stolen from masters. They were taken because they were good ideas. Unlike say, "Emerald Frost".

    D&D 4E 4E: A Mid-Life Crisis

In the new WOTC version, Knights have been re-named Super-Ultra-Dragon-Fist-Adepts, and now have a special power that allows them to to move like Queens if a game is played on a Tuesday by someone named Fred!

    D&D 4E My biggest concern about 4E

I wouldn't be so sure about that. TSR also thought it knew its market back in the 90s, and we all know what happened to them. Although market researchers often have pretensions to omniscience, their work is always limited by the available sample. Also, there is always the pressure to tell those...

    What DON'T you like about 1E AD&D?

Of course, remember that at the time that Gygax, Arneson & their friends were the only players in existence. Taking turns DMing was a necessity! Funny, in my experience it's been just the opposite. DMs are few and far between.

D&D 4E 4e and Lava Rules! Fire and Brimstone

I've used similar rules also, except that mine necessitated everybody pointing and laughing at the dumbs**t whose PC fell into lava.

Which currently non-core classes would you add?

Assassin Illusionist (as a separate class) Jester Warrior-Mage Thug (Fighter-like & Thief-like abilities)

D&D 4E 3 months in and 7 to go - will YOU switch to 4e?

I'll probably wind up buying the PHB, so that I could play in a 4th edition game if I run into a DM willing to run it. I don't think I'll be DMing it myself, unless it turns out to be very different game from the one described by the information released so far. I have the same relationship with...

Why don't giants rule the world?

The Giants once were the dominant species on my campaign world's main continent. Then they overpopulated, started waging war against each other, and wrecked the continent's ecology. They succeeded in turning the entire central portion of the continent into desert, and were already a fallen race...

    Adventuring and Collateral Damage

Most PCs in my campaign worlds have tended to be pretty amoral, and I generally don't enforce a morality on them. I seldom have ever tried to motivate them with quests on the side of Good. The PCs' patrons aren't the type that care if the PCs make a little profit for themselves, or use whatever...

What DO you like about 1E AD&D

1st Edition was great because it was a set of rule guidelines to be used by a DM in running a role-playing game. It wasn't consistent or complete, but it encouraged and allowed for creativity. The original 3 rulebooks read like they were written by a fellow gamer with a real and definite...

    What DON'T you like about 1E AD&D?

Some of 1st edition's warts: 1) 1st level Magic Users were FAR too weak. They got to cast 1 spell a day, and thereafter had to justify why they continued to consume rations. 2) Unarmed combat. Ugh. 3) Level titles. I NEVER understood what they were for. Do people actually know what "level"...

Whats Wrong with Ganking CRPG Stuff???

I never meant to imply that "more popular" was in any way equivalent to "innovative". What I meant was that "innovative" may be largely irrelevant. Few people play any system because it's "innovative". Some do, but most don't. All that matters for most people is whether the game is fun or not...
