5e combat system too simple / boring?

I'm actually bewildered as to why 5E even bothered with the instant death rule. As soon as you gain a few levels the prospect of taking enough damage to actually 1 shot you becomes rather absurdly bad unless you're facing something that you're way too low level to fight. Bravo to 5E for at least...

5e combat system too simple / boring?

Yes, aside from the stray AOE, or maybe something lacking a sense of self preservation like a demon on the prime without fear of permadeath and more interested in causing harm than surviving...or possibly something with an extreme degree of aggression relative to a very low intelligence...

5e combat system too simple / boring?

Most enemies would make their priority to deal with the very much alive threats first unless it's a special situation. If the DM regularly had its NPCs prioritize unconscious adversaries over the ones swinging swords at them, the players wouldn't know why to be mad first, because it made no...

5e combat system too simple / boring?

While certainly there is a sense of growing tension as your resources deplete and you're confronted with more and more challenges, a day like this for a party of adventurers should be an epic day of days. It's ridiculous that every day they are confronted with a never ending series of dangerous...

5e combat system too simple / boring?

I find 5E combat rather fun given its faster pacing over prior systems, focus on flavorful abilities over the stat ladder, and bonus actions and reactions that make a combat round feel a bit more organic. The boring parts of 5E to me are more in regards to the significantly reduced risk...

D&D 5E (2014) Ditching concentration - did you do it?

I simply prefer spells with guaranteed results. While I don't disagree that a strong offense is important, I generally turn the page and keep looking on any spell that could outright fizzle with no effect. Clearly I lean towards damage dealing spells, though of course spells like fireball look...

D&D 5E (2014) Ditching concentration - did you do it?

To me there are so many defense and utility spells that I would much prefer over a spell that may or may not work in the first place, and then requires a renewed save each round, and you may lose if your concentration is broken. That's just adding insult to multiple injuries. Naturally we...

D&D 5E (2014) Ditching concentration - did you do it?

Concentration seems a bit pointless to me. Save or suck spells have been completely nerfed into the ground since 3.5 so there's no need to further handicap them. I suppose spells like Haste and Improved invisibility are strong enough that there's an arguement for concentration. Likewise, the...

D&D 5E (2014) Favorite method of generating ability scores

I prefer point buy. Players always want to roll until they find out what they rolled. Sometimes a player with have fun with a character with bad scores on RP grounds, but all too often you have someone who doesn't want a "crappy" character when the guy next door just rolled 3x 16+.

    D&D 5E (2014) Sleep is not a save-or-die spell (minor rant)

Yea, it's an action, not a bonus action. It's a handy 1st level spell, particularly since there's no save, even if all you did was basically waste the action of two enemies for 1 round. Of course there's always a chance that one of the other enemies doesn't use it's action to wake the target up...

D&D 5E (2014) Princes of the Apocalypse - More Magic Items

I've got a 3E state of mind. I don't want magical items overrunning the game, but at the same time players take satisfaction on saving their money to have the chance to buy something they really want. On the other hand, as a DM, I rather enjoy rolling the random tables. 5E largely regulates...

D&D 5E (2014) Horror and Ravenloft adventure poll

I'd rather it be a full source book and campaign setting. I rather don't like how 5E has been focusing on adventures. I can create my own adventures. I want the framework.

    D&D 5E (2014) Treantmonk's Guide to Wizards 5e

I don't disagree that I too would see this as how a familiar would help to provide advantage, though the PHB specifically states this form of help comes in the form of a feint. By definition this means "a mock blow or attack on or toward one part in order to distract attention from the point one...

    D&D 5E (2014) When to Roll Initiative

In 2E initiative was rolled every round. While this has not be the way to handle a fight since then, and doing it in this way can sometimes require us to make adjustments to how other aspects of the game system works, we haven't been able to give up on round by round initiative.

    D&D 5E (2014) Treantmonk's Guide to Wizards 5e

Taking the help action to give someone else advantage takes the form of a feint. I would imagine it would be difficult to feint against something that couldn't see you so I'm not sure most DMs would allow that.

    D&D 5E (2014) Treantmonk's Guide to Wizards 5e

The scouting part would age well I'd imagine. What I mean is.. 1) Advantage will likely come from other, more consistent sources at higher level 2) the familiar's ability to soak an attack suffers from degradation at higher levels similar to the Mirror Image spell. Which is to say at low...

    D&D 5E (2014) Treantmonk's Guide to Wizards 5e

In any event "soak 1 attack and give me advantage on an attack" ...I mean it sounds like I got good mileage out of that 1st level spell. Especially since it didn't cost me a combat round to cast and provided some scouting duty beforehand. It's going to fall out of favor quickly past low level...

    D&D 5E (2014) Treantmonk's Guide to Wizards 5e

Yea, most things aren't going to drive your concentration save higher than DC10, and with lets say CON resilience, Warcaster, and the innate SS ability, you're realistically going to have +8 with advantage by 8th level to +13 with advantage by 19th level. Above 17th level, we get to cast Shield...

    D&D 5E (2014) Treantmonk's Guide to Wizards 5e

What I'm saying is that we're over-rating the value of damage output alone. You're not only capable of 2-4 attacks per round (depending on haste and if you are duel wielding) by 6th level (which compared to many classes is quite respectable), but you're now no longer a damage avoider but also a...
