D&D 5E (2024) Counting the minutes to get the PHB 2024...

Well, I’m no longer getting the maintenance notice on my DDB iPhone app; it tells me there’s a new update to the app, and redirects me to the App Store. But the new update has apparently not been pushed through yet.

WotC Greg Tito On Leaving WotC: 'It feels good to do something that doesn't just line the pockets of *****'

Okay, I gotta push back on this, because it is not remotely what happened. In the initial 2014 release of the PHB, RPGPundit and Zak S. were listed as consultants. At the time, Zak S had not been accused by anybody of sexual abuse. He was at the time a well-known and ENnie-winning RPG writer...

D&D General Not the Wicked Witch: Revisiting the Legacy of Lorraine Williams

My point is, half the posters here are not responding to friends and collaborators about conflicting mutual memories. If you treat the people who are ostensibly important to you like Joe Rando on the Internet, I would submit that they are not really important to you. There is no context in...

D&D General Not the Wicked Witch: Revisiting the Legacy of Lorraine Williams

The full exchange pretty much confirms the podcast's take on it, IMO. Gygax posts his recollections on Dragonsfoot. Kuntz respectfully suggests he is misremembering something. Gygax comes back disproportionately hot, and makes it a point to bring up a person's dislike of Kuntz. I mean, this was...

D&D General Deborah Ann Woll Teaches Jon Bernthal D&D

A clip from Jon Bernthal’s podcast. Deborah Ann Woll is a deft hand. With no warning, prep, or dice, she takes Jon Bernthal through a mini-encounter that gets him thoroughly invested, and elegantly communicates the gameplay of D&D.

D&D 5E (2024) Learning to Love the Background System

My impression is this. At its core, chargen in D&D will revolve around choosing an origin feat and assigning ASI’s how ever you like (as per Tasha’s). However, the new presentation is that the PHB is no longer “the rulebook.” The DMG is now the rulebook, and the PHB will only tell new players...

    D&D 5E (2024) So IS it a new edition?

Absolutely. It could certainly be argued that 5e’s incredible run as a print game is what allowed it to establish its subscription model. Imagine if 5e acted like every other edition and dropped 50% its second year. The digital tools might have been abandoned when Dungeonscape fell through, and...

    D&D 5E (2024) So IS it a new edition?

I like the DMG! It has all the stuff I want and need. I don’t even think it’s disorganized! But, I think it’s very fair to say that it doesn’t contain what many people seem to want it to contain.

    D&D 5E (2024) So IS it a new edition?

It seems to me that people are approaching the situation from the perspective of customer response to the rules as the primary driver of editions/revisions. But I think this fails to account for what historically has been the driver: plummeting sales. Not in the sense, mind you, of “sales...

D&D General Bob World Builder Recreates WOTC's "Do You Like Me?" Survey!

The YouTubers they contacted did not just post snippets of the PHB. They posted full-page shots of dozens of pages at best, and the creator who set off the whole WotC reaction posted the entire PHB. Nor did WotC ever say to anyone that it was to prevent people compiling screenshots for piracy...

    D&D 5E (2024) New stealth rules.

Yes, this is where I stand. Inasmuch as we go by RAW, the spell is problematic, but the Hide action works fine. That said, here’s how I see it. The Invisible condition is a metagame mechanic that does not reflect the “game world” reality. The Invisibility spell and Hide action both provide the...

    D&D 5E (2024) New stealth rules.

The game tells you how skills work: the DM tells you when to make a check, and you roll a d20+ability mod+proficiency bonus (if any). Clear the DC set by the DM, and you succeed. Sample DCs, how to set a DC, when to call for a roll, that’s all stuff the DM needs to be concerned with.

    D&D 5E (2024) New stealth rules.

Yes. What does that have to do with the Invisibility spell? Being seen under the Invisibility spell doesn’t end the condition. It can suspend some of its benefits, but it doesn’t end the condition.

    D&D 5E (2024) New stealth rules.

“Find you” has nothing to do with the Invisibility spell. It ends the Invisibility condition provided by the Hide Action. The Invisibility spell provides the Invisibility condition as well, but has its own, different requirements for ending the condition.

D&D 5E (2024) Skeleton Entry and Stat Blocks from New Monster Manual

Piercing weapons still have concussive force, and skeletons still have big targets with the skull and pelvic bones. I approve.
