WotC WotC Removes Digital Content Team Credits From D&D Beyond

This is in the very first post on the subject: Note that she's not talking about the DDB implementation when she says "book," she's referring to the content of books not yet finalized.

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D Player's Handbook Video Redactions & Takedowns

My point about acting early was not about "stopping piracy." It's about not allowing their copyright to be frivolously infringed. Even Jorphdan and SlyFlourish, whom I believe were promoting the book in good faith, went beyond the boundaries of fair use. The strike on Jorphdan's channel was...

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D Player's Handbook Video Redactions & Takedowns

Sure, but just because piracy cannot be stopped totally doesn't mean it should just be allowed in all cases. Let's say they let it slide this time. That will only encourage people to take greater liberties. Eventually they're going to have to say, "That's too much." Better to do it now, when...

    D&D 5E (2024) New stealth rules.

Responding as the person pemerton quoted, let me put it this way. I believe that when the designers wrote "find you" in the last paragraph, they no doubt were thinking primarily of the Perception check mentioned earlier. Because, as I've mentioned elsewhere, they were assuming that any Hiding...

D&D General Not the Wicked Witch: Revisiting the Legacy of Lorraine Williams

Setting aside the fact that the idea of "corporate culture" was just beginning to make inroads in the late 80s/early 90s, and its possible, even likely, that Williams didn't have a full understanding of the concept, one person, no matter how powerful, can't change a culture. It requires buy-in...

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D Player's Handbook Video Redactions & Takedowns

SlyFlourish absolutely showed more than 30 pages. I lost count at 50. And he definitely showed the whole page. His camera was set up to show a full two page spread. He may have stopped and talked about 30 pages, but he was showing a lot more. Having seen the video, I can understand why they...

D&D General Not the Wicked Witch: Revisiting the Legacy of Lorraine Williams

The GDW lawsuit was actually mentioned in the podcast. Specifically, that Gygax used D&D spells with just their names removed. I don't recall who was saying it (Steve Winter, I think?) but they seemed to think the lawsuit was justified. As for Mayfair Games, the first suit brought by TSR...

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D Player's Handbook Video Redactions & Takedowns

I'm being somewhat facetious. Of course he knows how to do reviews: he did one in addition to his page-through video. I have no doubt he knew exactly what he was doing.

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D Player's Handbook Video Redactions & Takedowns

As I understand it (and SlyFlourish, please correct me if I'm wrong), generally there are no restrictions on review copies, by anyone. WotC initially sending the copies without restrictions is not particularly unusual. Because usually, reviewers do reviews, with a judicious amount of the product...

D&D General Not the Wicked Witch: Revisiting the Legacy of Lorraine Williams

I agree with pretty much all of Snarf's post. The matter is made difficult because Lorraine has never provided her side of the story. Virtually everything we have heard from her has come from Gary, Gary's friends and admirers, and the creatives who worked for her. Though the last, we should...

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D Player's Handbook Video Redactions & Takedowns

Let’s see if we can’t clear up some of the players here. DnD Shorts did an hour and a half video that showed every page of the PHB, in order. His video was the first removed, and very likely the inciting incident. Jorphdan is who Mistwell is thinking of. Did a 3 hour live stream flipping...

    D&D 5E (2024) New stealth rules.

No real difference for me. I like that it provides multiple expressions of invisibility. It might be Predator style light distortion, or a displacer beast kind of effect that puts the you in the blind spot of the eye, so that people can catch a glimpse in their peripheral vision, but can never...

D&D General When We Were Wizards: Review of the Completed Podcast!

More to come later, but I’ll say my biggest gripe with the podcast was they had so many people contributing in their own words, a true oral history, but they often don’t announce who’s talking after the first time they speak in tan episode. Some people have pretty distinct voices, but there were...

D&D General When We Were Wizards: Trailer for the Podcast

Indeed. I recommend listening again to the introduction of the first episode. It pretty clearly lays out the theme of the podcast.

    D&D 5E (2024) New stealth rules.

I think the Hide rules are clear enough, but if someone says the Invisibility spells no longer provide pure invisibility, ie, complete transparency, I’d agree with that. The spells would appear to grant less “Invisible Man” invisibility, and more like Predator invisibility.

D&D General When We Were Wizards: Trailer for the Podcast

My impression of the podcast, and I think this is even mentioned by the hosts, is that it is less a comprehensive history of Gygax, or even TSR, but rather the Tragedy of Gary Gygax the Wise. A man so creatively powerful he could bring forth a completely new kind of gaming, with tropes that...

    D&D 5E (2024) New stealth rules.

Yup. Much more streamlined, at least on the player-side. There will likely be advice on adjudicating Hiding in the DMG, but as far as I'm concerned, I'll just stick with the 2014 rules, which have served me well.

D&D General When We Were Wizards: Trailer for the Podcast

So, I've listened to all the episodes, including the latest (and last) one, and nothing, nothing in the whole series has been more of a gut-punch than to hear Lorraine Williams' first offer to buy-out Gygax, in an effort to stave off his lawsuit: She would buy all his shares at $3,000 a share...

    D&D 5E (2024) New stealth rules.

Indeed. Bloodied is back, and conditions, at least, are making a move away from the “natural language” presentation of the 2014 rules. Though I prefer the natural language presentation, I don’t see this as necessarily a bad thing. Like any new edition, 5e was in some ways a reaction to the...
