Chris Perkins: Reintroducing Settings in Ways that Surprise People

    Opportunity Action Rules Question

Was reading through the 4E PHB, DMG, and MM last night for fun, and had some questions about the Opportunity Action rules. The PHB states the following: Turn: On your turn, you take actions: a standard action, a move action, a minor action, and any number of free actions, in any order you...

D&D 5E (2014) A lich must periodically feed souls to its phalactery...

Eventually, we just ended up going over the responses Mike Mearls posted to various questions on the topic, and stuck with what we thought the "intent" and "spirit of the rules" that the design team seemed to be going after (most of it revolved around the Halfling's hide ability and sneak...

D&D 5E (2014) A lich must periodically feed souls to its phalactery...

I agree wholeheartedly. Unfortunately, the last decade and-a-half of D&D for us made it hard to try and look at the game from a different angle. A rules set that is left a bit more vague and open to DM interpretation. You should have seen the discussions at our table around Stealth and Hiding in 5E.

D&D 5E (2014) A lich must periodically feed souls to its phalactery...

P.203 of the 5E MM states that "A lich must periodically feed souls to its phalactery to sustain the magic preserving its body and consciousness." It also mentions "A creature imprisoned in the phylactery for 24 hours is consumed and destroyed utterly." Does this mean that a lich requires a...

D&D 5E (2014) Attacking from Stealth. When you can / cant Hide - A thorough breakdown

It bothers me that the ambiguity of the rules as written requires this level of effort to try and make sense of.

D&D 5E (2014) Mike Mearls Interview with the Escapist

Thanks for this link. After struggling a bit in my group with hiding/obscurity and the Lightfoot Halfling and Wood Elf, Mearl's interview really kind of clears up the reasoning behind it (and almost mirrors exactly what my groups DM and I had gotten around to in a conversation just yesterday).

    D&D 5E (2014) Mounted Combat Question

In rereading the description, it actually seems to me like you are able to choose from turn to turn whether or not you control the mount (so long as it's not intelligent like a dragon). On turns you choose to control it, it acts on your initiative, and can only perform three actions options...

    Thanks Merric! Much appreciated.

    D&D 5E (2014) I think I finally get how hiding works

Hi Merric, Do you happen to have a link to Mearl's tweet, or the exact language he used? I thought I noted it down somewhere, but can't find it now. Thanks.

    D&D 5E (2014) I think I finally get how hiding works

I really don't know what I would rule. I'm here to try and discern how other people are interpreting the rules for hiding/obscurity and the special corner cases introduced by the Lightfoot Halfling and Wood Elf. If the observer was in a brightly lit 100' x 100' room, and someone was in a 30' x...

    D&D 5E (2014) I think I finally get how hiding works

Wouldn't the elf be able to hide automatically in a Heavily Obscured area since the person who might perceive them would be given the Blinded condition? "A creature in a heavily obscured area effectively suffers from the blinded condition (see the appendix)." Blinded • A blinded creature can’t...

    D&D 5E (2014) I think I finally get how hiding works

Ok. If they are just "obscured by an ally," does that qualify for the person making the Passive Perception Check (or even an Active Perception Check) to have to take disadvantage?

    D&D 5E (2014) I think I finally get how hiding works

I hate how muddy this gets. Say the Lightfoot Halfling tried to hide again behind his human ally in the same spot...as Mearls wrote it, the DM could impose disadvantage on his check when he tries to hide. Per the Lightfoot Halfling description, he is able to hide when Lightly Obscured by an...

    D&D 5E (2014) I think I finally get how hiding works

Am I alone in thinking that it's rather ridiculous that, as written in the new edition, we have go to these lengths to try and interpret the hiding/obscurity rules?

D&D 5E (2014) What's one thing that pleasantly surprised you, and one thing that disappointed you about the PHB?

Pleasant Surprise: Most of the art in the PHB was better than I thought it would be after seeing the previews. Disappointment: Some of the art was just as bad as the preview art, and some of it was worse.

D&D 5E (2014) Mounts, Animal Companions, and Familars thoughts (I finally Got the PHB!)

I mentioned the following in another thread regarding mounted combat....It seems rather vague: Page 198 of the PHB under Controlling a Mount states: "The initiative of a controlled mount changes to match yours when you mount it. It moves as you direct it, and it has only three action options...

    D&D 5E (2014) Tyranny of Dragons - What year?

    D&D 5E (2014) Mounted Combat Question

Page 198 of the PHB under Controlling a Mount states: "The initiative of a controlled mount changes to match yours when you mount it. It moves as you direct it, and it has only three action options: Dash, Disengage, and Dodge." If you look at the Warhorse description of the Warhorse on p.311...
