    Character Sheet Contest Finalists

I am not a huge fan of any of the sheets, but I probably like Steven Grindeland's design the best of all the options. Not a fan of Brian Morgen's design, and really not a fan of the "different for the sake of being different" trend I have seen in a lot of the responses to the art and game...

D&D 5E (2014) December Package is here, it was about time!!

I am really liking this packet so far. Seeing it as a big step in the right direction.

    D&D 5E (2014) Mage Armor

With Mage Armor as a cantrip that lasts an hour now, is there any reason why a Wizard character wouldn't keep this "up" all of the time now (other than being asleep, or in an area where magic doesn't work)?

    D&D 5E (2014) Skills & Proficiencies

I might just be missing this right now, but does the new playtest packet describe if (and when) you can add new skills as you level your character? Also, for the casting in armor rule, it says you have to be proficient. Does the packet state when and if you can add proficiencies as you level...

    D&D 5E (2014) Healing after 29 Oct playtest

We have been using the "All Around Slower Recovery" in our playtest, and we still feel like it is a little too much healing, so the new experimental systems they just introduced aren't going to be something we want to try/use.

    D&D 5E (2014) Criticals

So the rules for the extra damage on criticals for characters/monsters with class levels on pp.16-17 of the playtest packet.... Do they seem just kind of random and tacked on to anyone else? Just trying to figure out what the point is if max damage is already a benefit of a critical (including...

    D&D 5E (2014) Acquiring new trained skills?

Hi folks, Maybe I just missed it reading the new playtest packet, but where does it mention learning a new trained skill? I see it talks about when you get to add a bonus as you level to one current trained skill, and the same paragraph does mention getting a new trained skill, but doesn't...

    Some playtest questions

I think only the sorcerer can....so there is that.

    Some playtest questions

Right. That goes without saying. I was just making a note that the Fighter taking a Thief background could do a lot of "Thiefy" things and one-up the Rogue's backstab. Seemingly making it an overall "better" choice.

    Some playtest questions

Good point. I guess I just never experienced them in my AD&D gaming group. That said, when and if multi-classing is added to the playest...well, damn....as it is currently written, talk about a McGuyver.

    Some playtest questions

Pardon me if these questions have been asked and answered already. I have tried to look through as much info as I can before asking. • Minor Spells / Orisons - Is there a limit to the number of times these can be cast in a day, or are they just "at will, all the time?" • Sorceror's Dragon...

    Skills - Playtest Packet 2

Hi folks, Maybe I missed it in my packet 2 read-through, but are there any restrictions on skills, or can any character attempt to use any skill as the system is currently written? Thanks

Oh My Goodness! That looks like D&D!

I agree with OP. After my initial read through, this "feels" like the D&D my group and I want to play.

Thanks for the great info. I continue to really like what I am hearing from the Next design team.

Why I Think Rolling For Hit Points is a Bad Thing

I much prefer the randomness that comes with rolling for hit points.

Healing Fully With Rest - Is It Really That Big of a Deal?

Yes, it is a big deal to some of us who played a lot of 1E and 2E. Healing resources were generally much more scarce, and as mentioned previously in this thread, to obtain the same in game feel, you have to come up with contrived solutions in the playtest material as it is written now.

    Combat Speed Comparison

Good points. As a gaming group that cut our teeth on 1E, and probably spent the most time (and had the most memorable campaigns) using 2E, it was fairly easy for the me, playtesting the Fighter, to come up with interesting options, and the DM to judge the effect. Hopefully, the more people...

    Combat Speed Comparison

Our play test combats were much quicker than our 3E or 4E combats.

Thanks for the link to that old review. Interesting how tastes can change with time.
