D&D 5E (2014) Point Buy vs Rolling for Stats

So their stats suddenly jump from commoner to something else? Of course not. They are still a commoner. Obviously I don't think that's what you mean. But the comment was specifically about the stats that a commoner would have. The NPC remains a commoner in stats regardless of whether they are...

D&D 5E (2014) Point Buy vs Rolling for Stats

Not assigning stats is different. Most of the people that the characters in our campaign care about are commoners. Most of their family and friends, for example. And most of the time, they don't need stats, but often they do.

Oh, I have no doubt I'm the wrongest.

Even using only the standard array, that is only one set of stats, there are 720 variations for your array. And it grows exponentially for each line that you add. An array to generate random allocation among all allowable stats between the low of 8 and high of 15 in the standard array would be...

But see, that's where I disagree right off the bat. A commoner isn't equally good/bad in every aspect of their life. Each person is a mix of stats, so to say a commoner is centered around an average of 10 is reasonably, but not all 10s. Certainly a blacksmith is stronger than most clergy, for...

Works for me. The point is that the barrier is definitely not 16.

In general, the 5e version of NPCs are the ones on the back of the MM. However, the DMG under the section of NPC Statistics says that if you need them, one option is giving them a class and levels and specifically states, "You can create an NPC just as you would a player character, using the...

D&D 5E (2014) Point Buy vs Rolling for Stats

Apologies to Maxperson who answered in the negative, but mathematically it would, provided you designed the array and the selection of the individual line of stats properly. There are two aspects to this. The array could be the entire array produced by 3-18. The array could be chosen by...

D&D 5E (2014) Point Buy vs Rolling for Stats

This is a fallacy and factually incorrect. It all depends on the die rolling method, but the standard array was selected because it is a close approximation of the average of 4d6k3. Rolling 3d6 for stats results in only a 9.56% chance that you will roll higher than the standard array of 72...

D&D 5E (2014) Point Buy vs Rolling for Stats

That is 100% incorrect as I pointed out. The fact that you choose to use one of the systems that doesn't allow you to have a 16+ does not alter the meaning of a 16+. In the game, 18 is the pinnacle of normal human capability, not superhuman. That starts at 19. That hasn't changed since the game...

D&D 5E (2014) Point Buy vs Rolling for Stats

3d6 swapping rolls won't. And anything that allows you to drop the lowest die makes it even more unlikely to roll a 4. While it could happen, two 18s (without racial modifiers) would be very rare, although the probability increases the more dice you roll (then drop). The 18 and 4 character...

    D&D 5E (2014) Critical Failures

I like the question, and I'll get back to that in a moment. Your answers are more about the goal of the mechanics of the fumble, rather than the goal of the fumble itself, but it's good stuff. There are two points I want to address. First, I was thinking about the statement that front line...

    D&D 5E (2014) Critical Failures

Good point. You have the ability to use your reaction to parry in my campaign, and most likely the fighter is going to be better at that. So that mitigates it to some degree. I have built in confirmation for my critical hits. You have to roll a 20 and hit by 5 or more. For a fumble, I could...

I must have missed those. I'll start digging through the thread. Always looking for options and ideas... But I wasn't just talking about being bounded to a fixed total. I was also commenting about specific comments in other threads where a character at creation having a single point of...

Then it's me, and I won't worry about it. When I read posts that call me or my approach bulls*t, stupid and the like, and your desire to punch people in the face, I'm not sure if you're attempting to make a joke, or not. Rather than make assumptions, I thought I'd ask for clarification. I have...

Mine is simple. If you roll a natural 1 you provoke an attack of opportunity from the target of your attack. I also have weapon damage rules, and on a natural 1 you have to make a weapon damage check if you're using a bow or crossbow.

D&D 5E (2014) Point Buy vs Rolling for Stats

So this is an interesting statement, because it's pretty much exactly how we developed our system. Look at the goals, and choose or design what works for your goals. And I totally agree, if the standard array or point buy meets your goals, then use it. But there are a few fallacies in your...

D&D 5E (2014) Point Buy vs Rolling for Stats

Yeah, in Holmes basic it was even more complex: Magic-users and clerics can raise their prime ability by 1 for every 3 points they reduce Strength Fighting men, clerics, halflings and dwarves can increase their prime ability by 1 for every 2 points they reduce Intelligence Fighting men...

D&D 5E (2014) Point Buy vs Rolling for Stats

So I have a legitimate question, and I'm asking in good faith. Is there a reason why your posts seem to be angry and insulting? Is it intentional, or do you not realize it? Because I have no problem with you (or anybody) preferring point buy. The standard array and point buy are essential...

D&D 5E (2014) Point Buy vs Rolling for Stats

I don't quite understand how point buy stops dump stats. It seems to me that it enables it. Rolling in order prevents dump stats by definition. You can't dump stat, because you'll get what's rolled.
