    Deep Gnomes through the editions

Svirfneblin haven't really been introduced in 4e yet. Underdark has entries for gnomes who can meld with stone, which sounds like a perfect ability for svirfneblin. But the gnomes in Underdark aren't called out as being especially different from regular gnomes. At one time I thought we'd never...

So... how 'bout that Vecna article!

Indeed, I'm beginning to wonder if I'm some pureblood sleeper agent, programmed to subconsciously stand up for Zehir under the guise of a gamer ... ;) I guess I don't feel Zehir has yet been presented as cool enough to make me want to kill him and take his stuff, so right now he seems...

So... how 'bout that Vecna article!

Perhaps so. A quick read of Vecna's on Wikipedia article suggests he learned his arcane lore from a serpent figure, which, in a reinterpretation for 4e, could mean Vecna stole Zehir's secrets. Maybe the Book of Vile Darkness was in Zehir's library and Vecna obtained it via duplicity. However, I...

So... how 'bout that Vecna article!

I read the article and liked it, especially the reference to the Book of Vile Darkness (the mortal Vecna strikes me something like Abdul Alhazred from Lovecraft, and the Book of Vile Darkness could be akin to the Necronomicon). However, I found myself thinking that a lot of this stuff should be...

    January and Beyond!

While I think the shade is fine thematically, I agree with the main mechanical complaints voiced in this thread. For my part, I don't mind the healing surge penalty as long as they are compensated for it. As a start, I might replace the current racial power with an encounter power shadow form...

Sleep is the most worthless spell

Will the DM ensure that monsters have access to similar Save-or-Die effects to use on the PCs (and will, in fact, use them from time to time)? If so, then at least the playing field will be equal and it should all balance out.

    2010 Retrospective: 1Q Products

Underdark is among their best books of the year. IMO the reason for that is because it does a pretty good job combining new and old elements of D&D, and it relates the story of Torog in an imaginative, engaging way. I liked MP2. What I think is most notable about it is that it really played...

Dungeon 185 - Bark at the Moon: Dungeons biggest adventure

Where did this information appear? I'd be interested in reading about it, but I obviously missed it.

WoW Cataclysm VS 4e Forgotten Realms

My rationale? The Cataclysm was done better than the Spellplague. What does "done better" mean? Well, for one, it was done in large part to fix things that were generally considered broken or at least suboptimal, such as quest flow, zone size, the ability to fly in Azeroth, and so on. FR had...

Dungeon 185 - Bark at the Moon: Dungeons biggest adventure

While I like good maps, ultimately they are a minor issue to me. The adventure seems fine. I was hoping to get more information about the relationship between lycanthropes and Sehanine in the 4e world. I recall reading somewhere (maybe Worlds & Monsters?) that Sehanine isn't a fan of them - if...

    Runepriest Article Bumped Again!

Although I think runepriests aren't a great class thematically, the article's flavor is fine for what it is IMO. I do agree that there should be epic versions of these Words, because that sounds like something an epic character should be able to do. However, from a thematic standpoint I don't...

    Question re essentials pets

The way I understand it, the pet's healing surge value is equal to the PC's healing surge value.

Swordmage: Isn't it a little bit unbalanced?

The swordmage in our group had an awesome AC/Ref and solid Fort. But Will? Oh man, his Will was awful. Kick your swordmage in the Will. That'll make him cry.

The Slow Death of Epic Tier

Honestly, I've been thinking lately that the only tier I ever have fun playing is Heroic tier. This is because the mechanical options are easy to juggle, and I like the theme of the tier. It also feels like the math works best here. I'd love to have a good experience with Paragon or Epic games...

HS1 - The Slaying Stone - my poor reviewing skills review

I read through Cairn of the Winter King. While I think it's a serviceable adventure, it doesn't feel like a mini-sandbox like how The Slaying Stone or Reavers of Harkenwold feel. It gets points for some "ooooh! aaaah!" moments, for presenting the danger in media res, and for advocating for more...

Interpreting Cunning Stalker Feat from HotFK

FWIW I can see what you mean. I've known players/DMs who might try to twist the wording in the manner you describe.

HS1 - The Slaying Stone - my poor reviewing skills review

Reavers of Harkenwold, the adventure included in the DM's Kit, has a similar construction (not surprising, since both were written by the same author). I have Cairn of the Winter King, the adventure included in the Monster Vault, but I have yet to read it. I'll get back to you on that ASAP.

How do do Paragon Tier Adventuring?

This is what I was thinking after reading the plot outline, too. Make there be a twist of some kind that puts it on the player's shoulders. IMO, more than Heroic tier even (although it's useful there as well), good Paragon tier campaigns require the DM to adopt more sandbox thinking. I think...

Bluff Check - Feinting in combat ?

Yeah, I've never seen Bluff to be used as a feint in combat. I'd be amenable to making a skill power that lets you feint as a minor action, once per opponent per encounter. If you simply let creatures feint as a minor action, expect a lot of PCs to take Bluff, and be prepared to perform the...
