New campaign, need to balance this Flaw

Yes, assuming you want to submit this to a wiki. If just for your DM, talk it out dependent on what your trauma will be. As a DM, I'm always skeptical of the hidden agenda of an addition to the rules, so I make sure it fits. Like, I agree and then the player decides to something that really...

    How do YOU detect evil?

I know him well enough to know his answers: "Fact," he would scoff. "That's your interpretation. Just because you say it's fact, doesn't make it so." (even though, probably 99.99% of us agree with you) "The spell makes it clear that you detect evil auras. Show me in the rules where it says a...

Help me survive a twink's campaign

Can you be evil (doesn't take away from the revenge factor)? Otherwise, you have to make that pesky Will save or become evil.

Help me survive a twink's campaign

I don't play as much as DM, but I found that for survivability I like the Scout class. He's got decent hps, good skills, and several 'survive' feats like Evasion. However, if you want to take full advantage of skirmish, it often means putting yourself in graver danger. Also, I like adding a...

A question about knocking a character out.

Well, I have to admit thinking that 8th isn't really all that high (for most people; in my worlds, 9th is the 'official' high level point). I was also thinking about the City build PCs/NPCs from the DMG. "Certainly, you would have a lot more high level characters than 8th!" But then I remembered...

A question about knocking a character out.

Well, an 8th level FTR doesn't seem to be that high of a level, but with a 16 Con, max hp at first level, and average rolls he would have 72 hps. That's more than the average of max falling damage (20d6). Likewise, a Barb of 7th would have 70 hp. This is one of the reasons I'm thinking an E6/E8...

A question about knocking a character out.

One cheesy, but easy way out for the DM is to say the PC is "completely at an opponent's mercy" because of his inebriation + surprise. Then it would qualify as a 'helpless' state. Since he's 'helpless', say goodnight, Gracie. (Of course, it would technically require a full round action to coup...

    How do YOU detect evil?

He really, really hates evil, especially undead. His moronic tendencies are intentionally part of his character that he and the DM worked on over several years. He knows it, I know it, everybody knows it. What's really funny is that his other character (same world, different campaign) is a CE...

A question about knocking a character out.

The chief problem that everyone, of course, realizes is that unless you're low level you generally won't be knocked out by one punch (even if you're flat-footed*). This conflicts with any semblance of realism (because D&D is soooo realistic). So how do you fix it? House rules seem like the...

    How do YOU detect evil?

I agree that it's silly, but that's what a friend of mine argued (paraphrased). However, I should mention that it was HIS character who was the paladin/paladin-like and he knew that some in the party were evil, so I think he was looking for a way out. However, the DM does intent so it didn't...

Concealment miss chance applies to critical hit confirmation rolls?

The world must be coming to an end.

    How do YOU detect evil?

Over the years, I've seen DMs throw out the RAW and play detect evil as they feel fits their world. I've even done detect evil one way in one world and another way in a different one, even though both worlds were played at the same time. Note: 'I' in the following arguments do not necessarily...

    Escape from Grapple

My problem with this is that I can't find that in my 3.5 PHB book, PHB pdf, RC, or the SRD. Is it possible you have a 3.0 PHB or am I just missing it (or is it in another book)? EDIT: I see it's posted this way on WOTC but the article is 7 months older than the RC. From the SRD/PHB: "When you...

New campaign, need to balance this Flaw

I have to make this quick, the wife's calling. I thought about it and I'd say scratch some of my comments on type/kind, etc. With the Flaw as you have written, a player can't take this Flaw unless the monster in question has a sub-type. Unfortunately, I think that leaves out things like Giants.

    Dragon Breath

This is where I think you are going the wrong way. IF we were talking strict game mechanics, it would work that way. Instead, we are talking comparative analysis, which is a totally different monster. Let me explain: If you are a low level party, you won't encounter a Balor, Pit Fiend, Remorhaz...

Okay, so *why* is EN World GM-centric?

I have to disagree with this. Quite a while ago, half a dozen DMs/GMs (none of which used modules/adventures) had a similar conversation. We thought some of the modules were fantastic and we would happily steal ideas from them. But as one guy put it, it was like being forced to play a...

New campaign, need to balance this Flaw

Ah, I understand. Good point. I can see how it could easily become Improved Childhood Trauma and Greater Childhood Trauma! I believe I do. Something like: To trigger this effect, the hostile creatures must share at least one racial subtype with the subtype of the creature[s] that caused the...

    D&D 3.x Shooting past people. 3.5

Yes, grids are always best. Yeah, ir, you're right, for my part I forgot there was more than one PC in-between the rogue and mage. So it would be the "double plus one" rule: if the rat is more than 15 ft. away from the mage, then the PC should be able to step diagonally up to be next to the...

Ah, the stupid things PCs do...

In Traveler and any other game with a big red button, one player (the same player) would always push it. Boom! In the realm of "DMs make bad players", a DM (from '75 on) joined my campaign. The party promptly declared him to be party leader. The target was a small fort of bandits. Frontal...

Save or Die: Yea or Nay?

I know I'm way behind on this thread, but ... According to reliable sources (PhDs in Classical History and Mythology + my mailman), a Hero is, and always was a Hero. In the Medusa example, if he hadn't gotten the shield, he would've won another way. I always tell my Heroes, that they are Heroes...
