Games you were turned off of and why

On GURPS, there were many many many many many many books published for the game. But most of them were stand alone resource supplements. The only ongoing lines they have had for GURPS sourcebooks have been Traveller (very popular for them), Transhuman Space (again popular), and WWII (just...

Games you were turned off of and why

Not sure you did the Wild Die fully accurately. When a 1 was rolled on the Wild Die it would have one of 3 possible results (depending on importance of the moment and GM fiat). It could simply add 1 to your roll. It could take away the Wild Die and the highest # you rolled. Finally, something...

Games you were turned off of and why

Don't mean to take it off topic and you are entitled to your views and opinions, but you found d6 Star Wars clunky? I am working off the assumption given that you post here that you at least on occasion play D&D 3.x or a d20 game of some sort. You enjoy these games and their rules mechanics but...

Games you were turned off of and why

That reminds me of the next to last time I ever played it. We had spent three hours trying to get the characters all made, I was running the game and it wasn't a killer or anything in concept, but a lucky laser pistol shot finished off a PC in just over one hour. We said no thanks, lets go back...

Games you were turned off of and why

Let's see, the games I will never play again.... First I've got to go with the Rifts trend. There are some things I like about the descriptions, but the Palladium system is a scary thing to me. So I would have to pass on all their games save one --- Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. That screwy...

What if. . .WotC never bought TSR?

As for worst game period ever, that is a matter of opinion, not fact and you do acknowledge it as such. To refute your opinion I give you White Wolf games (innovative and popular), Shadowrun's expansion, d6 Star Wars massive expansion, and a boom of books from SJ Games making for an amazingly...

If you were the GM, would you accept this behavior?

Well off the top of my head I know there were rules for Spotting/Searching/Noticing Things in the following games: Star Wars D6 (WEG) GURPS (Steve Jackson Games) Call of Cthulu (Chaosium) Elric (Chaosium?) World of Darkness (White Wolf) Paranoia (WEG) Toon (Steve Jackson Games) Champions/HERO...

    GURPS-Share your thoughts

What you say here is understandable and reasonable. But through limited word usage and by pointing out the GURPS books at a reduced price w/ no mention of any other company's books at a point in the thread where people were talking about quality and why a given set of books were reduced in...

Assess this chap's position (3.0 and older versions)

Don't think your quite catching my meaning. The DC's aren't set up under a uniform system. What is an easy difficulty under one skill is considerably harder under another. Don't have my book in front of me at the moment to quote exact #'s. Each skill lists its own set of difficulties/target...

Assess this chap's position (3.0 and older versions)

No. People frequently talk of the unified core mechanic that underlies the newest edition. They are simply pointing out that its not quite as unified or consistent as many claim.

Assess this chap's position (3.0 and older versions)

You gave good examples of ways to use CR/EL, just not repeating for space reasons. What I was referring to on that point though is that CR is flawed in presentation. The warrior vs. fighter option. 1 level more of warrior does not make them equal. The CRs of monsters simply don't balance them...

Assess this chap's position (3.0 and older versions)

Psion, first I must state that I failed to properly divide my previous post, only the Denial aspect at the beginning was directed at you. The rest was a simple brief comparison over some of the aspects of the two games. I was not attempting to attack any of your positions save the one based on...

Assess this chap's position (3.0 and older versions)

First I must state that Psion, you are in denial. I am not going to claim that 1st and 2nd edition modules weren't treasure laden, they were. But to claim that D&D 3.x and its library of books containing feats and prestige classes printed by both WotC and other d20 publishers along with the...

    It's Official!

This is a very good point. Jurgen is correct in pointing out that the system as seen in current D&D can create issues in terms of balance. I would also recommend GURPS, but barring that the likes of HERO or even the D6 system can do the job fairly well for you.

This is flawed logic and I will 'splain why. You can also order all three of the D&D Core Books at Amazon for a grand total of $59.31 and they are $57.99 for all three at Overstock.com. So going by your inference, D&D 3.5 must also be pretty poorly to be going at a third off their cover price...

    GURPS-Share your thoughts

I agree, I do like this imagery myself. I've noticed in D&D that when two equal warrior types are battling it out one-on-one it frequently comes down to the same issue about one good blow. Either it is an impressive critical hit that ends the day or both end up down to about 10hp's and whoever...

    GURPS-Share your thoughts

I can't really agree with this. I've playing in or run GURPS games set in things like X-Files, King Arthur, Star Trek, Mecha-Anime, Batman, Noir-Supers, X-Men Mutant Styled, The Matrix Concept, and a couple of real kick-ace Wuxia-Hollywood Action Mini-Campaigns. It was always simply a matter of...

Do you prefer the 3.5 or the 3.0 weapon size rules?

I am not overly wild about the 3.5 version for the big reason stated above, screwing the small characters. They have a Strength penalty because they are smaller but then also have the amount of weight they can carry reduced an additional amount and now a die code reduction so that they lack the...

    Fantasy Races and Originality

I think you can get a lot of mileage out of the standard races if you just have a little fun with them. In various worlds I have had mighty and highly structured, if brutal hobgoblin empires that had earned enough fear and respect to be left alone by their human neighbors. I've used elves as...

The Paladin killed someone...what to do?

From what limited info was given here I would strip the Paladin of his powers. He could atone for his actions but it would require a true act of contrition to get them back. Why? Because he killed a man who was an accomplice in an assault on his wife and child. Did the family die? Sounds like...
