    D&D 5E (2014) It's the Sorcerer!

The 5e sorcerer can cast any of a limited number of known spells using daily slots; that mechanic is identical to the 3e sorcerer (and the 5e sorc adds built-in metamagic and bloodline features). The 5e wizard prepares spells from a spellbook to cast with daily slots, the same as the 3e wizard...

    D&D 5E (2014) Legends & Lore 7/21/14

It wasn't presented as a serious objection; I was actually agreeing with Mistwell's main point, which some seem to have missed (including Mistwell!). However, calling advantage a +5 bonus isn't really accurate, and I was just pointing that out before stating my overall agreement. Thus, nitpick.

    D&D 5E (2014) Legends & Lore 7/21/14

That doesn't address the point, which is that offered the option to drop two points on ability scores, you can drop those on dump stats; "requiring" that they later add two points to their main stats isn't a counterbalance. If you want everyone to take a feat at 1st level, it'd be easier to just...

    D&D 5E (2014) Legends & Lore 7/21/14

One nitpick: Advantage is worth +5 at most; it's effectively +1 to +5, depending on the base odds of success. But yeah, War Caster looks really good for certain character concepts, but it's certainly not an auto-pick.

Further dump one or two dump stats in exchange for a feat? Who wouldn't take that deal? I agree that it sounds flavorful, but it does up the power level just a bit. (Which is fine if you're cognizant of it.)

    D&D 5E (2014) Official D&D Basic Discussion Thread

The benefit isn't that good, as Nagol noted. The math is here: http://www.enworld.org/forum/showthread.php?356419-Great-Weapon-Fighting&p=6326329&viewfull=1#post6326329 Like Nagol, I'm confused; where is the extra +2 damage coming from for a dual-wielder? Great weapon fighters pass up...

    D&D 5E (2014) /Ragequit Rants

Do we really know about outer-planar adventuring? Now that I think about it, I haven't seen one mention of Sigil, not to mention what should be a mandatory Planescape boxed set! /:rant:+:quiz:-z+:trav:-raveller

Given the way spiritual weapon works (lasting 10 rounds), that would be way overpowered. The wording's a little awkward, but I believe it's accurate. It's better (or at least, more powerful) than the playtest version, which was +1 damage per level above 2nd.

D&D 5E (2014) D&D 5e Basic Set: Things that make you go "what?!"

Huh, that's a weird change from the playtest. Kinda sucks, I think; this is what made ray of frost a nice go-to for an evoker.

D&D 5E (2014) Hooray for parts of speech!

Yeah, I was wrong about that one, though. Darn you, Intimidate and Streetwise! So yes, this has been a long-standing pet peeve of mine. :o

D&D 5E (2014) Hooray for parts of speech!

I almost forgot to mention one of my favorite things about the new edition: after years of suffering in English anguish, D&D finally has a list of skills that uses consistent parts of speech! No more weird mix of nouns (Diplomacy, Perception, Stealth), verbs (Heal, Intimidate, Listen, Move...

    D&D 5E (2014) Katana in 5th edition - finesse?

Right, the thing to remember is that a lot of these design choices are about modeling fiction, not reality. Finesse weapons exist so that you can have lightly armored rogues and swashbuckling fighters effectively using melee weapons in a game where the default melee ability is Strength. It's...

Or 40 points of damage with fire bolt. From up to 120 feet away. And it's an almost-guaranteed 20 damage for an evocation specialist.

    D&D 5E (2014) What is an evocation spell's level?

Thanks, I hadn't seen that yet. What threw me off a bit were some other wizard features. For example, Signature Spells clearly seems to refer to intrinsically 3rd-level spells, due to setting the context of "in your spellbook". I like the way that the rule is worded on p. 78, making it clear...

    D&D 5E (2014) Great Weapon Fighting

Just to see how bad it'll get, let's look at 20th level, when fighters get 3 Extra Attacks. Assuming they'll have (at least) a 20 in Str or Dex by then: Average damage on 4 hits with GWF using a greatsword or maul - 20 Str: 53 ⅓ points of damage Average damage on 5 hits with TWF using...

    D&D 5E (2014) What is an evocation spell's level?

I'm unsure of how to interpret a couple of the Evocation wizard's class abilities with respect to spell level, and was wondering what others thought about them. The first is Sculpt Spells, which says that "you can choose a number of [other creatures] equal to 1 + the spell's level". Should that...

D&D 5E (2014) D&D 5e Basic Set: Things that make you go "what?!"

The Thief archetype is still described as learning "skills useful for delving into ancient ruins, reading unfamiliar languages, …". But they removed the Decipher Script ability, so the Thief has no special skill with languages.

D&D 5E (2014) D&D 5e Basic Set: Things that make you go "what?!"

Whoa, that's weird. That looks like a straight-up error. Since the playtest, they nerfed mass cure wounds and boosted prayer of healing, and must've missed the interaction. Unless an extra 30 feet of range is considered that valuable. Why even have both spells? Just dump mass cure wounds, and...

    D&D 5E (2014) Blog Post by Robert J. Schwalb

True dat. Being able to pull out all the stops and go all-out vs. the PCs? This is something that I loved about DMing 4e combat. I hope 5e works out this well, or at least close.
