Forked Thread: V-minis and DDi (was Gamespy interview)

Well for us who feel that they don't add any value, it's kind of perfect that they charge extra for them. Then we can feel certain that we're not paying for something we don't want. Those who think that they add value will probably be more ready to pay. And if not enough people are interested...

    Mats and mapping recommendations plz

Paizo took over the Flip-Mats, and they have expanded the line. I personally think that is the best option out of what is for sale right now. Tact-Tiles, on the other hand seem to be really good, but are no longer available in shops.

    D&D 4E Favorite 4E classes(all)

The same seems to be true for me, except I didn't realise it before. I have played a Bard/Virtuoso with 4 levels of Fighter to level 21 (so far) in 3.X, loving the versatility and the ability to take on the party role that needs more support at any given time. Wednesday night my new tactical...

Dorkiest Thing You've Ever Done in Gaming...

First I can think of, from 25 years ago: Statting up all the Valar Deities & Demigods style... and thinking I was cool for doing so, and that it would be very useful when I played.

New Faces (Forked: Its the terminology that kills me...)

So true. In the early 80s they told me that they played Call of Cthulhu or RuneQuest or Rolemaster or Chivalry & Sorcery, so they were better than me. Then they played GURPS or Kult or Warhammer so they were better than me. Then they played freeform so they were better than me. Then I played...

    Developer Talk = Gospel?

I sometimes pick up lingo and thoughts from designer articles and blogs, and I guess I should try to explain why. As a kid one of the things I loved to do was design boardgames. I know I had about 20 of them in a closet somewhere, no clue where they are now. One of the things that you pick up...

Does anyone actually like Dragonborn and Tieflings?

I would add one more. The changeling. In this case meaning the seemingly human individual who is actually a fey creature in disguise, which was swapped with the real baby at birth.

Is optimization on a common ground such as teamwork good for an rpg?

I would compare it to how races work in D&D. It is easier for people of the same race to get along, but not enough so to make it necessary for adventurer parties to be of one single race. And if they choose to do so, they can still be a well rounded group. The problem with how clans are...

Forked Thread: Once per day non-magical effects destroy suspension of disbelief

Disclaimer: This here is not written out of being a fan of a certain edition of a certain game. Just out of my philosophy when it comes to RPGs. If I try to stop and think about "suspension of disbelief", and when I have felt it myself when I have looked at a load of games over a lot of years I...

Is Discovering the Abilities of New Monsters Part of the “FUN?”

I often enjoy the gotcha moments, both as a player and as a DM. As a DM I just try to make sure that those kind of tricks from me don't kill PCs or take away their most beloved possessions. As a player I enjoy the feeling after first making up a plan, then finding out what a huge mistake it was...

    Grading At-Will Powers

Within a few hours I set out to try and test out Commander's Strike properly. An 18 Int tactical warlord with two strikers in the party should mean plenty of times when that is a really good option. Till I have seen it fail in that setup, I will not say it is a weak at-will. And I think this...

Is optimization on a common ground such as teamwork good for an rpg?

I think a good fit in regards to combat mechanics makes it more likely that combats will be fun. (I don't mean perfectly optimised, just good enough that there is some synergy going on and no glaring holes where the party will run into trouble.) On the other hand I think a seamless fit in...

Is optimization on a common ground such as teamwork good for an rpg?

I guess it depends on how we play the games. I have consciuosly wanted to keep those game styles separate, so that different games get different feels. In Vampire storylines are often more personal, where one character at a time is very much at the centre of things. We would also often play...

Is optimization on a common ground such as teamwork good for an rpg?

To me this actually depends on what kind of game you are playing. In my experience from Vampire, I would say that the individuals are much more important than the group (which also means that I want to play that game with smaller groups, as big groups means lots of waiting for the others...). In...

Does anyone actually like Dragonborn and Tieflings?

Back when I was 34 I might not have liked them. At 43 I feel that they are a breath (weapon) of fresh air. Of course it might be that I love the idea of fantasy races that don't feel like they could just as well be a human culture. The art of the dragonborn and the tiefling is only one...

    Players Vs. DMs

First of all, I am not at your table and have really no idea how things work out for you. I still feel I want to say a few things, as you touch on a few things that are kind of close to my heart. Like storytelling techinques in RPGs. :) Well if one person doesn't like it, it can be enough to...

    Players Vs. DMs

Thanks for this thread. I had never seen the monkey torture clip, and it is such a perfect way to explain a lot of things to people. :) Off Topic: I am considering using it to illustrate some attempts at modern teaching theory...

Does anyone actually like Dragonborn and Tieflings?

The "elven split" problem is a lot older than D&D. You can blame Tolkien if you want to. Compare the Eladrin in the LotR trilogy to the Elves in the Hobbit... (Or just read the Silmarillion for the same thing with more explanation as to why.) I would trace it even further back, to the word...

Which settings of the 3e era (past or present) are stayers?

Scarred Lands is the one 3E era setting that has appealed to me the most, and the one I look back most at for inspiration when I create my own thing.

Does anyone actually like Dragonborn and Tieflings?

I don't like those features either. On the other hand art is easy to ignore. My inner visions of the races are somehow always a lot cooler to me. ;)
