    XP and PCs gaining Templates

Agreed, it is just like taking a race with high LA, except the LA is being applied mid-campaign instead of at character creation.

    Highest AC's

20+Level for a very good AC is not unreasonable. For example, a low level character can pretty easily have: TANK Dex 12: +1 Dex Plate +1: +9 Armor Shield +1: +2 Shield Protection from Evil (Deflection +2): +2 Deflection Barkskin: +2 Natural Total: AC 26 A mid-to-low level cleric could...

    Seventh Level Monk

The point of 0.5-1 ranks in Disable Device is that you can (1) Make Aid Another attempts to help the ranger disable traps if he has a rogue level (2) be a stand-in rogue; with Guidance, +2 masterwork tools, and Fox's Cunning you can get a decent check with just one rank. Remember, Open Lock...

    Seventh Level Monk

Just a few thoughts: Size Monks benefit a LOT by "getting big." Getting large size gives you reach for your Combat Reflexes feat, grants a sizeable bonus to your Grapple/Trip checks, and improves your damage. I'd suggest potions of Enlarge Person or a Wand of Enlarge Person if you can trust...

DMM Persistent Spell - Do You Allow It?

After letting this run for a few days here are my thoughts, in summary. Verdict: DMM Persistent requires careful DM management but is only absolutely banned in about half of games. 60 people (48%) ban DMM Persistent outright. A lot of these folks weighed in with comments ranging from "I...

first time cleric needs to survive

If all books are available -- as this poster said they are -- isn't Lesser Vigor still the preferred spell for out of combat healing? I suppose Augment Healing could still be useful for those in-combat heals.

first time cleric needs to survive

That's the point of Improved Buckler Defense; you retain the Shield Bonus to AC when attacking with an off-hand weapon. ;)

    Xykon vs paladins with "clubs"

Sure I'd allow it, but don't you also take -4 to hit with an improvised weapon?

first time cleric needs to survive

For some reason, the war domain is getting a lot of play. I'm not sure why. A morningstar does 1d8 (x2 crit) with piercing and bludgeoning damage. Many of the commonly referenced war domain weapons (hammers, axes, etc) are almost exactly the same, having only a superior crit modifier and...

    Cleric/Paladin Build for EtDWP

I think the question should be: What are you trying to do? Massive Surviveability? You only have 14 con, so I don't think that's it... Your saves are pretty decent though. Massive Offense? A two-handed weapon (greatsword) + power attack is usually the best way to max out damage...

DMM Persistent Spell - Do You Allow It?

Hello, Just wanted to run a quick poll and see how common a "ban" is on this feat combination. I've explained it below if you're not familiar with it. Here's the Trick: Feats Required - Extend Spell, Persistent Spell, DMM Persistent Spell Divine Metamagic allows you to use Turn Undead...

Not Everyone is Interested in Powergaming [merged]

Stormwind Fallacy: The fallacy that optimizing precludes good roleplaying or that being intentionally deficient signifies good roleplaying.

    Cleric/Paladin Build for EtDWP

Welcome to the Boards! I'd submit that a pure cleric is stronger. If you must have the longsword and shield look, be a Radiant Servant of Pelor, use the War Domain, or be an Elf. I assume that you're using the Strength domain to get Enlarge Person. I think you'll find much better synergy...

first time cleric needs to survive

Agreed... And that's why I suggested DMM Quicken, as well. It is often seen as much less abuseable, and besides, at 13th level, Quicken Spell is handy to have. Quickened Divine Favor is a staple of high level clerics. The OP stated that "any books were allowed," the thread title was help me...

    Favored Enemy Rationale

Rangers get bonus damage against favored enemies because in 1E rangers got a bonus of 1 HP/level vs. pretty much all nasty humanoids (from kobolds to giants, yup!). It has just translated through the editions to its current form. In 2E you had to select a specific foe.

If you go this road, take Skill Focus (Concentration) instead. Combat Casting provides a +4 bonus sometimes whereas Skill Focus gives +3 all the time.

Can you take 20 when searching for traps?

No, because then searching for traps would become: 1) Take 10 on Search check. 2) Roll the D20 multiple times if sketchy (takes 2 minutes OOC). 3) Conclude that there is nothing there and move on, or get unlucky. Now it consists of: 1) Take 10 on Search check. 2) Take 20 on Search check...

Does a Wizard's Spellbook Count Towards Standard Wealth?

It should count against character wealth. You'd charge the fighter for his +1 longsword or those potions of Enlarge Person he has in his backpack, right?

first time cleric needs to survive

Good News: Clerics are Uber Powerful. Bad News: They are somewhat complex, but not TOO bad. Here's a quick sample level 13 melee cleric build using elite array: STR 13 (Boost to 14 if possible) DEX 10 (Boost to 12 if you can for wearing full plate and maxing AC) CON 14 INT 8 WIS 15+3 from...
