    Shadowdark Shadowdark General Thread [+]

Played Shadowdark at Origins and am now 100% sold on it! Was even able to pick up a copy of the core book in the dealer's hall the next day.

Origins Game Fair Confirms 19K Attendees in 2025

Origins felt more crowded this year, definitely. Also, by about the third day, the entire convention center smelled of sweat. Not a fan of that.

What are you reading in 2025?

Finished reading Mona Lisa Overdrive. It boggles my mind that back in the day I read the first two books and never got to the third. It ties the whole Sprawl Trilogy together, while leaving some tantalizing questions for readers to ponder. Now I'm dipping back into fantasy with Lin Carter's...

What videogames are you playing in 2025?

Unless I've got a weaponized car or am working with a netrunner build, yeah, I find vehicle combat a little rough.

    Should PCs Be Exceptional?

After running so many of the official campaigns for 5e, I'm fairly burnt out on "save the world" style campaigns. Give me a basic dungeon or hex crawl, or something else with lower stakes than facing forces out to destroy the world.

Do you remember your first RPG purchase?

The idea of a someone thinking that Runequest would be a better fit for a ten-year-old than the Red Box is amusing. I get that people are passionate about their particular game of choice, but that seems a tall order for a kid to start with.

Trailer Spaceballs 2: Not the Quest for More Money

Undercover Boss: Starkiller Base is pretty darn funny. And that Adam Driver was involved, that really brought it over the top.

What videogames are you playing in 2025?

I paused my current Streetkid re-play to wait for the new patch in a couple weeks. Currently playing Armored Core VI. As much as I'm a huge Soulsborne fan, this is the first time I've played an Armored Core. It kinda feels like what I pictured Battletech looking like in my head when I was a...

Trailer Spaceballs 2: Not the Quest for More Money

The older I get, the more tragic John Candy's death at 43 feels.

Trailer Spaceballs 2: Not the Quest for More Money

Living up to the original is going to be a tall order. But the ensuing years have also provided a lot of material ripe for parody. I kinda feel like the time for all these 80s sequels passed the world by about 20 years ago. There's a ton of 80s nostalgia now, sure, but the original actors are...

What are you reading in 2025?

Definitely. The more things change, the more they stay the same. The book does talk about the prevalence of cheating, and why. Interesting stuff.

Where’s The Deathstalker RPG? Part 2

That is actually pretty actionable. There's a clear setting that isn't just generic fantasy. There's a magic system, monsters, peoples. And a clear conflict.

    Should PCs Be Exceptional?

I keep meaning to show up at a con game and play an elf with a pot belly and receding hairline. Just to see how people react.

What are you reading in 2025?

Shared Fantasy is really worth reading. As far as I'm aware, it's the earliest academic work examining RPGs and gamers. But it's also quite readable. Two things that struck me about in particular. 1 - Even in the earliest days, there were people fudging dice rolls. and 2 - Likewise, arguments...

    Should PCs Be Exceptional?

Oh, absolutely. Just look at Vampire the Masquerade. You have layers between the mortal and vampiric worlds. But part of why it worked was the Masquerade. Vampires are on a whole different power level from mortals. But they are still bound by the need for secrecy. Not to mention the...

Goodman Games: Our Efforts Have Been Mischaracterized

Their second-most successful Backerkit campaign, behind Caverns of Thracia. However, when you look at the number of backers rather than funds raised, it drops to the 7th place.

What are you reading in 2025?

I finished Tiptree & McIntyre's The Girl Who Was Plugged In / Screwtop. The Girl Who Was Plugged in is so ahead of its time - if PKD is the grandfather of cyberpunk, Tiptree deserves to be named the grandmother. Screwtop isn’t as prescient, but rather it shows how little the penal system has...

    Should PCs Be Exceptional?

And maybe that's the crux of it for me. I'd say it's also about allies, in addition to opponents. Because it's important to me to square the ecosystem of the game world.

    General DCC RPG thread

Yeah, definitely Dark Sun over Mystara. Original Greyhawk would vibe, too. As far as DCC RPG-specific settings, Lankhmar and Empire of the East are both very cool (though I might recommend using the setting of Empire of the East without the class restrictions). Dying Earth, likewise, but it's a...

    Should PCs Be Exceptional?

Absolutely. That's one of the mistakes of the most recent Conan movie (well, that and everyone screaming up into the sky, holding something), making it be about saving the world. It's not about superheroes on one end of the spectrum and incompetents on the other. Rather, to my mind, it's about...
