So WHY Didn't The OGL Contain The Word 'Irrevocable'?

You DO realize that they read briefs on these issues that explain these things, and they don't just make rulings based on their own personal knowledge of issues, right? The number of amicus curae briefs that would be filed by tech firms over a lawsuit around the OGL at SCOTUS would be stunning...

So WHY Didn't The OGL Contain The Word 'Irrevocable'?

It's about an open-source license being able to be voided because it didn't have the word "irrevocable" in it, because it was written years before "irrevocable" was commonly used in the wording of these licenses. D&D and Pathfinder? That's small time compared to the implication of the suit as...

    D&D 5E (2014) I still want D&D and Beyond, but...

There's no real difference between the two. WotC is a division of Hasbro. Both are managed by executives with no RPG industry experience. It's just different levels on a corporate org chart.

    D&D 5E (2014) Will you continue to give WotC D&D your $$$

No. Categorically not. I'd refused to buy anything from WotC for over a decade after 4e came out. I was one of the people who felt "fired" by WotC after the bungled mess that was 4th editions design, marketing and rollout. I'd only just started to slowly come over to 5e and to buying WotC...

So, who can 'authorize' and 'de-authorize' the OGL?

There have been some legal threats when some companies went too far. I know HeroForge had to remove a "squid head" option for their miniature maker because WotC served them with legal notice they felt it infringed on their copyrights for illithid. Not simply by just being a generic "squid...

So, who can 'authorize' and 'de-authorize' the OGL?

Of course, it will take years for such litigation to play out. Even after there's a ruling, there's still appeals. I'd expect the issue to not truly be settled for at least 5 or 6 years after litigation began. . . .and it could ALL be rendered moot at any time by new management at WotC...

So, who can 'authorize' and 'de-authorize' the OGL?

I'm sure someone will do it. It's just a matter of who, and when. The OGL ecosystem is large, and while litigation could be time consuming and expensive. . .if some OGL small business did start that fire, the odds that they'd get support from crowdfunding, from other gaming companies, pro...

Gizmodo Reveals OGL v1.1's 'Term Sheet' Carrots For Selected Publishers

I've been saying this for a while They HATE that D&D is a hobby that you can just pay once for some core books, and you and your friends can play D&D in perpetuity. They HATE that D&D is a hobby where there's a robust ecosystem of 3rd party add-ons (gaming supplements, minis & terrain, dice...

D&D Beyond Cancellations Changed WotCs Plans

Tens of thousands, between 10,000 and 99,999. It's called "5 digit" or "5 figure" because it's a number that is expressed as XX,XXX. . .five digits long.

As opposed to their whole strategy for D&D falling apart?

Gizmodo Reveals OGL v1.1's 'Term Sheet' Carrots For Selected Publishers

WotC will stab us in the back, that's what. Sorry, but they can't be trusted regarding the OGL anymore, not at all. First, if they can just cancel it at any time on little notice, or amend it at will, then it's worthless for publishing because they can just come along later and pull your...

WotC Walks Back Some OGL Changes, But Not All

. . .and WotC saying that in a FAQ for about 20 years, plus the creator of the license saying that repeatedly, are some of the major reasons for the rage that WotC is generating through this. They've been saying, consistently for two decades that this was how the OGL worked. . .and now they...

WotC Walks Back Some OGL Changes, But Not All

Quite literally the only OGL product I can think of that ever really created any controversy with its content was the "Book of Erotic Fantasy", the d20 sex book from 2003 that DID force WotC at the time to change the d20 System Trademark License to have content controls. . .but they didn't...

WotC Walks Back Some OGL Changes, But Not All

Because it's not under their brand. There's nothing in the OGL that lets someone use the brand names "Dungeons and Dragons" or "Wizards of the Coast". That was a very careful part of the OGL and how it was constructed. So no, they shouldn't have a dang thing to say about anything published...

WotC Walks Back Some OGL Changes, But Not All

Except when they get to define that in their sole discretion. Giving them a legal backdoor to block any product for any reason they can cook up that they can tenuously call "hate" or "bigotry" etc. is handing them powers I don't trust them with. For example, for almost 50 years, character...

WotC Walks Back Some OGL Changes, But Not All

Anything that "de authorizes" OGL 1.0a is absolutely unacceptable. This release was stunningly tone deaf to the actual reason for outrage.

OGL-Gate & Mainstream Media: The Guardian Weighs In

The "we know something is going on" response was announcing that the announcement scheduled for today is cancelled. . . .and they seem to have no clue how to proceed past that, because their big plan just ran into an iceberg. Lots of major media sources giving negative reporting, and they're...

OGL-Gate & Mainstream Media: The Guardian Weighs In

If this was Cynthia Williams's master plan to shut down 3PP's and thought she could just buffalo some small businesses into obeying her. . .her miscalculation just landed on worldwide major media, including business media. . .and has lead to a mass exodus of subscribers from D&D Beyond. This is...

Ryan Dancey -- Hasbro Cannot Deauthorize OGL

I haven't seen the case, but people are saying there have been some pretty favorable rulings around the GPL 2.0 in court, which is another open source license that doesn't have the word "irrevocable", but courts have found it to be that way. Yeah, there's a lot of strong stuff on the side of...

Ryan Dancey -- Hasbro Cannot Deauthorize OGL

I think it indirectly helped D&D, because it kept gamers that rejected 4th edition because it was so unlike third edition in the hobby. They didn't quit gaming, they stayed involved, and they were still around when fifth edition came out
