Response to Russ' Front Page Letter.

Russ, I'm just going to echo what's already been said. You've done fantastic work and you have a great deal to be proud of. You certainly deserve a break. -Derek

I Am An Orphan And Have No Friends

I find often in many games that the first PC to declare a living relative is the first PC whose loved one dies/captured/posessed . The movie The Gamers touched on this brilliantly.

    XP for Missing Players

100% of group exp with no role-play bonuses. I like keeping the party at roughly the same point. The missing players will fall behind on gear, which is bad enough. The spellcasting players can make magic items during this downtime, so that can explain their absence if they wish. Also, I have...

D&D 3.x [3.5] Halfling with Reach, you like it?

Laugh while you can, it'll be erratta'd. That and the bit about dwarves duct-taping bouncy balls on their feet so they can tumble in heavy armor.

D&D 3.x [3.5] Halfling with Reach, you like it?

Halflings in 3.5 have slinkys for arms.

How much can you play without metagaming?

We don't worry about it. There's loads of books/movies/TV shows/anime where people launch into full oratory during the middle of a fight. We sort of relate it to that.

Define Munchkin ! and How do you see them effecting the game ?

I agree. But I'd also add that "munchkin" is as every bit a useful term as "drama queen". No need for either term when "unpleasant gamer" covers both, is more applicable, and doesn't judge play style as it does the odius habits of the person being discussed. We're too small a community to...

    Planescape artwork what if...

I thought TDs stuff was great. It was a nice break away from "traditional" RPG art. I mean, nothing wrong with the traditional stuff. But sometimes you have to change things out and Planescape was just the setting to do that.

Favored enemies, Sneak Attacks and DM's

I've encountered such a mentality from many DMs and I've been guilty of it myself in my distant past. Thankfully, I'm with a really good group now, but in my college days I'd figure out what kind of monster I didn't want to face and make that my favored enemy. I think its important to explain...

What do you think about Monte's new PHB Racial Levels?

I like them. The one thing I wish we had more of in d20/D&D were more 3 level "classes" like this. Instead of blowing up everything into a full PrC its nice to have just a few specializations to inidcate the character is growing closer to his roots or whatever (and getting cool powers to boot!)

Is 3e a GM Nightmare? Rules and beyond!

I disagree. 1.) Such extensive rules give players a lot of ammo when arguing over a GM call. This didn't happen in 1e and 2e because we were arguing over the arbitrary rather than the factual. NOW: Hey! The orc moved within 5' of me! I get an attack of opportunity! What do you mean he...

[ENnies] New Revisions = New Products?

If a 3.0 product was elligible for an award just because of 3.5 modifications I would be Johnny McTicked. The creative leap of combining Intuit Direction and Wilderness Lore just because its in the rules is not something I wish to applaud. Now, conversions available on the publisher's website...

Marketing and passing D&D down to kids

I agree. I had originally hoped that WotC would take advantage of their Hasbro connection to expand D&D into other markets. Specifically a game like the one GDW produced a few years back (the name escapes me now). Basically, you chose from one of four base characters and played a board game...

Knowledge (local) only specific region ?

It's specific, but that's why I allow my players to use it in place of Diplomacy, Bluff, and Intimidate when they're in that area. That way the players get a benefit out of having been "from" somewhere and it lets them use it as a roleplaying hook. Generic Intimidate: Do what I say or I'll...

    DragonLance question.

Well, part of it was that Goldmoon was very, very old and her former ward revealed herself as a follower of "The One God" (Takhisis) and Takhisis inflicted tremendous pain on Goldmoon when Goldmoon instantly rejected Takhisis. So it was pretty much a dramatic combination of a whole lot of...

What d20 game hasn't been done [or done right] yet?

I say go the Broncosaurus Rex approach. Find any three topics that you have an honest and sincere love for. Now combine them. Hey, if Goodman Games can do it with Dinosaurs, the American Civil War, and Space Opera, then you can do it too!

what is your preferred period for d+d games?

Downslide. I want things going bad so the heroes can save the day. ... that said Midnight is looking yummier with every passing minute!
