The fault of a bad DM.

I agree a great DM can run anything and a bad DM can ruin anything. What you have to consider is how the average (even better the slightly below average DM). There are far more of them then great and bad DMs together. You need a real world test. If a "great tool" doesn't work in the hands of...

How to get paint off plastic minis?

I find that Pine-Sol works great for plastic miniatures. Soak them in about a 20% solution with water overnight. It comes right off with no damage to the plastic. Some of the softer plastic miniatures, like the early Mage Knight ones, seem to get a little softer until they dry. However...

The Classic Dragon Reviews - Take 2

I tell you, the issues seem a lot longer than when I was doing this a couple of years ago. Coming up next: Gods, Curses, the Half-Ogre and the missing picture of the Stinger!

The Plane Above - the Glorantha-fication of D&D?

The "Trollpak" for dwarves/mostali was an issue of Different Worlds: The telltale sign is that Greg's first article in the issue is "Why I dislike Mostali" (essentially, "they are boring.") Steve Perrin and Sandy Petersen do Trollpak like articles as well (Sandy's being on Mostali...

The Classic Dragon Reviews - Take 2

Dragon #28 August 1979 Our editorial this month touches on a longstanding issue in the RPG community, our reputation for being "freaky." He points out he has a friend who loves to read The Dragon but does not play the game. His opinion of what gamers like is not very good. Tim Kask points...

The Classic Dragon Reviews - Take 2

I was reading (un)reason's thread and decided we are far enough apart now to revisit this without treading on his toes. So, tomorrow I will be posting the long, long awaiting Dragon #28. Only 2 1/2 years after the last issue was covered!

The Plane Above - the Glorantha-fication of D&D?

Most of the RQ2 books were reprinted in large "telephone book" reprintings. They are somewhat expensive due to size (retail varied from $60-$80) but that is still a great deal compared to the size of the reprints. They are also still somewhat available. In fact, Steve Jackson Games (I...

    Hobby/Game Stores in Malls...

Granite Run Mall in Media, PA has Showcase Comics which is effectively a game store. It has been a long time since I have been there (it's about twice my "drop by" distance), but it apparently is still there. There is also a GW store in the Franklin Mills Mall in NE Philly. I have never gone...

What's Your Relationship With Your Fellow Gamers?

As with others, my ranking has passed through my gaming "career." Right now I game with people I only see at games. We are sociable, it's certainly not only "business." However, if we aren't getting together to roleplay we are playing some other game. When I started roleplaying I DMed my...

What are you favorite/least favorite Dungeon Adventures

I will second Chimes at Midnight. I have run a handful of Dungeon adventures and read all of the 3.X ones and it is the only one that left a lasting impression on my campaign.

Adventures with great bases for characters

In a few other threads there are discussions about what makes a great adventure. One thing that was made clear to me is that part of the appeal of the classic Keep on the Borderlands and Village of Hommlet is the fact that they have strong bases for the characters. What other adventures have...

    Where to buy UN-painted minis

I haven't been in the market for unpainted miniatures in a while. One company I found was a good, cheap resource was Irregular Miniatures. The miniatures were not very well done. However, they did the job and were very cheap. They also had a good line of normal animals, which was good great...

    May and Beyond

Well, at least some of the historical versions do have sex changes (succubi and incubi are the same creature).

Retcon the dumb "Faction War" and bring back the FULL on Blood War?

IMO, The Screwtape Letters is a good place to start. It also has nothing to do with hack-n-slash.

Retcon the dumb "Faction War" and bring back the FULL on Blood War?

Honestly, no one really understands the Law/Chaos dynamics. At least there is no consistent idea pf what they mean. Look at the various discussions on the alignment of House or Batman, etc. Everyone picks out various elements to say they are Chaotic or Lawful. There are too many "pick and...

Retcon the dumb "Faction War" and bring back the FULL on Blood War?

I'll pull an example, for me, from your very post. That's giving human motivation to a supernatural, iconic force.

    Who prefers a human-centric campaign?

I know you are likely just joking around, but yes, everyone. Everyone playing the game is human, thus they relate to humans best. Now, they may not prefer to play humans. They may even hate playing humans. However, being human they must relate to human. In fact, the players haven't even...

    Free RPG Day

I have always organized the event for the smaller of the two local stores. I will probably do so this year, although I admit that my enthusiasm is on the low side right now.

    GameMastery Flip-Mats

I find it lacks for the large encounters, or for mapping entire dungeon levels, but otherwise is fine. If you need the entire top of your typical dining room table, it will fall short. If you don't, it will work fine. And permanent as well. I saw the claim made and tested it. It cleaned off...

    Future of D&D Miniatures

However, I don't know any that did it with pre-painted plastic miniatures. The differences in production costs change the affordability of that business model. The closest to attempt it was WizKids with some of their Mage Knight line. None of those attempts were very successful within the line.
