D&D 5E (2014) Quest From The Infinite Staircase Adventures Revealed

Not a fan of Barrier Peaks but Pharoah and Tsojcanth make this a must-have for me.

D&D General Is WotC's 5E D&D easy? Trust me this isn't what you think... maybe

I’m voting a tentative no. I’ve only DM’d LMOP and I TPK’d the group in the Cragmaw Cave (I had them taken hostage). I’ve played part of WDH, and I thought it was tough, as a mystery, as combat was secondary (which I liked). As an old-school player/DM, I like combat to be dangerous, and I...

D&D General Keep on the Borderlands - How do you run the Wilderness?

This is how i (vaguely) recall playing B2 back in the day. The Keep was home base where treasure was spent and XP awarded, and the Caverns were the dungeon to pillage. The road between was inconsequential. To be honest, the only part of B2 that I ever really liked was the Keep. I find the...

D&D General What is your default approach to the rules, permissive or restrictive?

I voted permissive, because of the two choices it is closer to how I aspire to run my games. Like Lanefan, I don’t generally discourage a player from trying anything, but I do try to temper their expectations (the level 1 fighter is NOT going to cast a fireball by waving their hands) as needed...

D&D General Dungeons & Dragons survival sim video game coming

    If not modern, perhaps anachronistic.

How much RP set up should a DM do for players?

This - except change ‘probably’ to ‘definitely’. Smartass comments have to be spur of the moment (or written by professionals and delivered by Ryan Reynolds) to be effective.

D&D General PCs jumping to other campaigns/DMs

I read the OP as saying the player has a PC that is being actively played in my game, and he plays that same character in another game and when he shows up for the next session of my game the characters has the experience, treasure, and magic gained from the other game. Hard no from me. I...

D&D General Who “owns” a PC after the player stops using them?

I agree fully that this ‘theory’ is bizarre, at best. Again, I agree fully. Perhaps because I have been playing this game for a long time (46 years , give or take) and I default to more old school views, I have a lot of difficulty understanding the concept of ‘owning’ a make-believe character...

D&D 5E (2014) Players, would you play in a multi-year campaign that used only the 5.1 SRD?

I voted yes in both of the SRD polls. I ran (and may run again) a 40-50 session game, that I had to stop due to real-life commitments. The game is PHB minus some stuff (including multiclassimg). I would have no issue playing basic PCs, in fact, I prefer simpler to complex.

    Campaigns inspired by songs

OT: Lawrence Gowan has been in Styx since 1999, singing Dennis DeYoung’s songs and playing keyboards. I just listened to his second album last night as it popped on my Apple Music recommendations.

D&D 5E (2014) How often do your 5e sessions end with a Long Rest for the party?

I’ve only ever been concerned about ending during a combat encounter. And even that we have done once or twice because it was getting late. Because we use Roll 20 it’s not so bad as the map is exactly as it was when we next play.

AD&D 1E AD&D players and referees, what do you think of ascending AC?

I currently play in a couple of 1E games and Labyrinth Lord games and we use descending AC; I have the pertinent chart on my character sheet, no big deal. I also play and DM some 5E games using ascending AC. I’d say that ascending AC is intuitively simpler, is roll equal to or higher than...

D&D General Barrowmaze, Stonehell, Arden Vul, Rappan Athuk and other Megadungeons

I’m currently playing in a play-by-post Barrowmaze game using Labyrinth Lord Advanced. It’s been vey enjoyable, although a lot of that is based on the DM and the other players (and due to the PBP format, the roleplaying is superb). We have been exploring the large dungeon, as opposed to the...

D&D General What Are Traps For?

Back in the old days they were there to kill the PCs. Now, I’m not sure. If I placed a save or die trap in a dungeon now, I’m sure it would cause a kerfuffle. I recently used what I thought was a neat puzzle to unlock a secret door, but really it did not accomplish anything in the game (I did...

D&D 5E (2014) Quests From The Infinite Staircase

I will buy this for T1 and S4. The latter is the greatest adventure TSR ever produced for any edition.

D&D 5E (2014) Would you require a roll for this?

No roll needed. Unless you would normally ask for a roll to set off the trap! As an old grognard, I would applaud the player’s cleverness. And I would award bonus XP if instead of borrowing the fighter’s gauntlet, they instead said, “It’s all good. Fighter, lift the handle right here, to open...

    OSR Dragonslayer RPG truly delivers.

Undersold in the sense that your descriptor, “Anti-Marxist” makes him sound like he doesn’t agree with Communism. I’ll agree that comparing him to Lyndsay (whom I had to look up on Wikipedia) is more accurate.

    OSR Dragonslayer RPG truly delivers.

How many B/X-AD&D mash-ups does the world need? Regardless of the product, I will never send a dime to Gillespie. I think Jahydin undersells Gillespie’s politics. I recommend you take a look at his RateMyProfessor page for some insight. Also, while I had to purchase a number of textbooks that...

    D&D 5E (2024) Do you plan to adopt D&D5.5One2024Redux?

Hard no for full adoption. I expect I will peruse the playtest packets for bits and bobs that I can add to my house rules.

D&D General You are given the reigns: what do you do?

Despite my love for AD&D 1E, I would choose 5E as the foundation. I would have my crack staff clean up all of the ambiguities and broken spells and useless feats, etc. and there would a mandate to remove callbacks to old versions that exist only for nostalgia’s sake (goodbye 8d6 Fireball and...
