Will you be buying the 'Wizards Presents' previews?

Man, I ain't paying for advertising. We'll all inevitably hear every fact the preview books contain about an hour after they're released, anyway.

D&D 4E Material components and spell books? Get rid of them for 4e!

Oh, definitely. I figure the gag-and-bind technique is almost always viable, though. And it makes silent/stilled spells and ranks in Escape Artist worthwhile, too!

D&D 4E Material components and spell books? Get rid of them for 4e!

If his captors didn't gag and bind him? Sure, why the hell not. For plot device purposes, there's nothing wrong with sticking him in an anti-magic field or something, but otherwise I'm as okay with the captured Wizard being able to cast whatever he's still got memorized as I am with the...

Damage Types: Developers read post 13

Yeah, a lot of the quotes we've seen do seem to suggest this. Damn shame. It's a tremendously common thing for folks to try to houserule, but notoriously difficult to balance correctly. A new edition of the game would be the perfect time to build in logical defense mechanics from the ground...

D&D 4E Material components and spell books? Get rid of them for 4e!

Oh, I shoulda clarified; I'd put the material components with a GP value in a completely different category from the miscellaneous-crap-you-find-under-your-couch components. They definitely serve a valid mechanical purpose in the game, as do XP costs. I still don't really dig the flavor they...

D&D 4E Material components and spell books? Get rid of them for 4e!

Spell components have never, ever been cool or interesting. They're a flavor component that doesn't fit with any flavor I'm interested in, and they're typically ignored to the point of being entirely meaningless. Spell books are definitely cool, and are both a perfectly reasonable piece of...

    What the heck is "Unfun"?

Right, now that was a good post.

    What the heck is "Unfun"?

I suspect you're using the word "paraphase" incorrectly. I wholly believe that you intend to convey the spirit of the things you've read (although you've colored it heavily to support your argument), but I don't think you're actually reproducing the information. That's because I don't disagree...

    D&D 4E The Ultimate PHBI4e Warforged Poll

Voted "don't care". I love the hell out of the warforged, and I wouldn't mind seeing them in the PHB. But, really, they're pretty solidly tied to Eberron the way we understand them now, and they're definitely an important part of the setting's unique feel. So I also ain't gonna clamor for...

    What the heck is "Unfun"?

I could be wrong, but claims of players crying for "a Teifling paladin in Conan's Hyboria" strike me as an obvious straw man. I've got no problem with most of his actual points, but he's so bad at expressing and defending them that I find myself wanting to disagree with him.

    Swordmage Class

This comment is extremely correct. This is exactly why this character concept needs its own class (be it Duskblade or Swordmage or whatever), and cannot be effectively emulated through multiclassing. (Unless maybe they want to introduce a more flexible magic system where it's "cheaper" or...

    What the heck is "Unfun"?

Well, yeah, I was kind of referring to Plane Sailing's ruling that the post wasn't trolling. My point is that even though it's a honest argument rather than an attempt to stir up trouble, the whole post is centered around an unhelpful and somewhat dishonest debate tactic.

Is weapon and armor "proficiency" system REALLY necessary?

I think the "Wizards never had time to train with halberds" argument is slightly shaky, as I kind of doubt all characters from every automatic-proficiency-with-all-simple-and-martial-weapons class, regardless of individual or cultural background, have had a chance to train extensively with all...

Damage Types: Developers read post 13

This is something I've done some thinking on in the past, and I much prefer the concept of damage types to 3.x's somewhat silly "energy types" (Acid is energy? WTF?). The list that I like is this: physical (possibly subdivided into cutting and bashing), electric, heat (which would include fire...

    Eladrin vs. Elves

I really think it's far too early to say that the whole elf/eladrin thing really means what you're thinking it means, but I definitely agree with your point, here. The absurdity of whole intelligent species expressing very narrow bands of personality and lifestyle stereotype is extremely absurd...

    What the heck is "Unfun"?

This thread ain't quite trolling, but Sundragon2012 sure did unleash a horde of straw golems in that first post.

Rules For SOmething Other Than XP For Magic Item Creation?

I kinda like the sound of that. But since you already need downtime to create magic items in the first place, a temporary hit point penalty might not be all that meaningful. Makes me think of a computer game (more turn-based wargame than RPG) called Age of Wonders, where you had a mana pool to...

    1E Immersion VS Thespian Acting

For the love of God, stop saying "Thespian Acting". It's redundant. You might as well be saying "Actor Acting". Also, your implication that people who "act" their characters do so because they lack the imagination to "immerse" is pretty bizarre, and probably a really bad limb to climb out on.

Recommendations needed for a new system for an Old DM

Might want to take a look at the Spirit of the Century SRD, then. Maybe send the link out to potential players, too. Another way to learn about the game would be to listen to some other folks play it: I believe both the Gamemaster Show and the Rolemonkeys have recorded podcasts of SotC gameplay.

    Character Sheet fonts?

Looks like most of it is a font called CelestiaAntiqua. No idea where you could get it, though. Also, the usual D&D 3.x cover font, used here for the big "character sheet" title, has always looked to me like a variant of a font called Mael. Never been able to find a perfect match for it, though.
