    Grand Wiki Project (Update)

This is a deeply, fundamentally awesome and right project. I'd like to help out with it, some time when I'm not also running a game.

    Best d20 Supers game?

Mutants & Masterminds smacked the supers crown off Champions' head, in my book. I used to think of it more as Hero System lite, but with the right amount of screwing around with the power construction system, you seriously can get the same (or, well, very nearly the same) level of flexibility...

Did Anyone Else Try Out "A Song of Ice and Fire?"

See, I'm running Spirit of the Century right now, so I'm all immersed in the idea that the mechanical and roleplaying components of a character can be deeply intertwined, or even one and the same. When one PC decides to shoot an unarmed Nazi because he's got the aspect "I Hate Nazzys" written...

Are you going to limit PC alignments in your 4e game?

If I end up running 4e--and that's a big "if", because I'm interested in a whole lot of different games, lately--I will relish the chance to finally excise aligment from the game cleanly. If there's one thing 4e does right, it's the separation of its terrible freaking alignment system from the...

    What is GURPS?

Everytime GURPS comes up in discussion I start thinking "Man, I really ought to check out the new edition." And then somebody mentions "3d6 roll under" and I lose all enthusiasm for it. I will not try to claim this is a rational reaction. No less flexible than Hero? It's been a long time...

Did Anyone Else Try Out "A Song of Ice and Fire?"

Like a lot of folks, I thought of Burning Wheel immediately. And Spirit of the Century also has a social conflict system that sounds a whole lot like this. And, with 4e working social interaction into its whole skill challenge system, detailed social conflict mechanics really do seem to be...

Is 4E coherent, incoherent or abashed? (RPG theory stuff inside)

Thanks, Roger. That clarifies the issue a whole lot (although now that I understand skeptic's terminology, I know that I don't have enough of a grounding in 4e to really discuss this issue).

[4e Setting] No Age for Heroes

Aw, that is badass. I very much like that the axe needs to be re-consecrated, and that he doesn't know its name. The term "Ravenfang" strikes me as a little self-contradictory, though. Wouldn't "Raventalon" or something make a bit more sense? Also: The black feathers on the armor and the...

[4e Setting] No Age for Heroes

That is some high-grade awesome, there. I hope to hear you guys talk about this campaign on the podcast. I really want more first-hand gameplay accounts from people like you lot in order to form an opinion on 4e. I am seriously on a razor's edge of indecision about it.

Is 4E coherent, incoherent or abashed? (RPG theory stuff inside)

That's interesting. I don't think I've ever heard that element of GNS theory. I've always vastly preferred a balance of gamist, narrativist, and simulationist elements (for certain definitions of those terms, anyway). The idea they're incompatible is extremely bizarre to me. Certainly, one...

Indiana Jones & the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull - How to get that feel in an RPG?

    Favoured Class

That's a relief. Favored classes (and multiclassing XP penalties) were among the dumbest mechanics in 3e. Mechanical encouragements to play to archetypes instead of your own character concept are, in general, a fundamentally bad idea.

    Five Alignments?

Man, I was really hoping 4e was gonna make more progress in this area.

The Odyssey System -- Stripped-down Hot Rod d20 rules

I know I'm late to the party, here, but I have to say that this is exactly how I'd do it. For the most part, the whole list of things you've got planned for Odyssey sounds great to me, but the mention of both Wisdom and a Perception ability in your initial post really jumped out at me as...

To all the other "simulationists" out there...

That is exactly what "mook" means in a game where the player characters are cinematic hero types.

    Spellcasting as a skill mechanic

Yeah, I've got some pretty serious conceptual problems with any class or magic system that relies on a single ability score to power its central abilities. It's just bad design to leave as optional something which absolutely ever character of that class will want (and, in the case of skills...

    Cross-class skills fixed?

Hell, I just got rid of the whole "class skill" distinction all together. Didn't regret it at all. Honestly, the class skill lists are up there along with racial favored classes, multiclassing XP penalties, and randomly rolled hitpoints on the list of things I'm amazed that everyone doesn't...

    Flexible Magic System Idea

He said he's already got Elements of Magic, and that it isn't what he's looking for. Not sure why, though. From everything I've heard about it, EoM sounds pretty perfect for what he wants. Unless maybe it lacks the ability to handle standard d20 spells? The whole elemental thing seems kind...

Alternative's to Familiars & Ranger spells

I believe that common solutions are just to give the wizard or sorcerer a free feat or a d6 hit die, instead. Also, there are a bunch of specialist wizard options in Unearthed Arcana that replace the familiar with some kind of specialty-appropriate power. Also, I think there's a non-magical...
