It's Not the GM's Job to Make Sure People Have Fun

This is my policy, and my standard. If I've done this, I consider myself to have done a good job as a DM. I don't feel that ensuring the fun of the players is my duty, no more than they should be ensuring my fun. I strive to be the DM that I'd want running a game for me. If the players also...

A question to those that give the expertise feat for free

So, I just did some digging in the Compendium, and some math. I've concluded that the expertise feats are unnecessary, and that the whole "oh noes the math makes it impossible to hit at high level!" idea is a bunch of jive. My level 24 Dwarf Warden who is currently playing through E2 Kingdom...

    WotC's Epic Adventures

Well, we did both have the expertise feat. But even without that +2 to hit, we would have still been fine.

NEW (AGAIN)- Thunderspire Labyrinth- Stat analysis #25 Shrine to Baphomet

I find this analysis really fascinating. I hope you keep posting it!

The fault of a bad DM.

Ha, I see what you did there.

Chris Perkins now Senior Producer, D&D RPG

Don't put that on Bruce Cordell. I think it's wildly unfair to blame the sucktasticness of the published WotC 4E modules on him. He wrote some amazing modules back in the day. I think it's the fact that everyone writing published WotC adventures for 4E now are forced into writing them a...

    Willing Targets

I was wondering about something similar myself, based on reading this NPC: http://www.wizards.com/dndinsider/compendium/monster.aspx?id=4372 Look at his Reorder Reality power. Obviously, it would useful to use this on allies and enemies both, even on himself and allies, or himself and...

    Moving a grabbed creature

I'd do opposed Strength checks. But I'd make the grabbing PC attack versus the Mezzodemon's Reflex to grab his buddy, because the demon is presumably attempting to avoid letting him grab the target.

NEW (AGAIN)- Thunderspire Labyrinth- Stat analysis #25 Shrine to Baphomet

Actually, you can use a Heal check to grant your dying ally the immediate use of their Second Wind as a no-action, if they haven't used it yet. Using Heal in this way is only DC 10, rather than the harder DC 15 to stabilize. Since McGyver hadn't used his Second Wind yet in this encounter, this...

    A new D&D Encounters format...

Hmm. This is a good answer. I don't particularly like it, but it's sensible, well-explained, and it works. I suppose this is the only option, if you want to allow people to make their own characters and drop in/drop out at-will, and you want to have one continuous adventure story for the...

I want to be the best DM...

Yes. Very much so! I want to be the best DM that my players know. I want them to be telling people, years from now, "Man, I had this one DM once, he ran the most awesome game I've ever played..." I do want to be the best DM. I'm far from it right now, but I'm striving to become more and...

What are the basic building blocks of your games?

Ooh, good call. I do this too. I find myself spending hours just searching and looking through images online, finding cool pictures of locations or creatures or characters that inspire me with adventure ideas or NPCs. Also, weem . . . another great post. You're pretty much my DMing hero at...

    A new D&D Encounters format...

With this idea of the "revolving door" cast, players bringing in new characters at any time, and so forth, do you have any ideas on how to explain that from an in-game perspective? Or a way to set up the premise of the adventure that allows for the group to change every week without having to...

    updates of older modules

I'd love to see Bruce Cordell do a 4E remake of The Gates of Firestorm Peak. For some reason, that's my favorite D&D module of all time. I wonder how the new Tomb of Horrors by Ari Marmell is going to be? Hey Mouseferatu, got any "this is what I was thinking as I worked on it" bits of...

Do you use deadlines in your campaign?

This is the kind of time crunch I like and would use most often. Essentially, once you break in the front door to the evil lair and kill a few things, you've stirred up the hornets' nest. If you think you're just going to go camp out for a day and have all the rest of the bad guys standing...

    WotC's Epic Adventures

Well, ultimately it was easy because our DM respected my defender mark WAY too much and chose to have the monsters focus way too much attention on my character, rather than ignoring me and going persistently after the striker. Because I set out to build a Warden who would be "unkillable" even...
