Tabletopocalypse Now - GMS' thoughts about the decline in the hobby

Who said they have to bring in enough to replace those who leave? So what if roleplaying shrinks, it won't die out and that's what this thread is about. This isn't retail vs grass-roots, it's what if retail dies out. That's the point I'm making. I could care less if retail dies out because I...

Tabletopocalypse Now - GMS' thoughts about the decline in the hobby

Um, the same people who bring people into out-of-print games today and the same people who will bring others into soon to be out-of-print games. Again, I disagree. This might have been true in the 70s/80s/90s but I think your being a bit archaic. With the rise of the internet and it's...

Tabletopocalypse Now - GMS' thoughts about the decline in the hobby

I disagree, I would say that a huge percentage of gamers were brought in by somebody who already played the game.

    DM Question Time

    1. I'm lazy and so I just make all my games run on a barter system. Taking money out of the equation and forcing the players the think carefully about what they need and what they want. 2. Character specific items. Use their characters back-stories and development against them. I had one player...

Tabletopocalypse Now - GMS' thoughts about the decline in the hobby

I could care less. In some ways, I think the tabletop rpg's dying out on a retail level would be a good thing. I think the hobby is strongest with in the grass-roots like the OSR. Having said that, the hobby can't exactly die out when people are dedicated to playing. The fan support for...

    Movies

I think your misunderstood my reference to the toxic avenger. But that's besides the point. To paraphrase Uwe Boll, I think they made a good dnd movie because it feels like something that is associated with the rpg. The plot is dis-jointed, the characterizations are over-the-top and humorous...

    Movies

People always slam the original dnd movie but it was no worse than the toxic avenger or any-other 80's/90's b-grade movie that are trendy now. It's entertaining with good, funny characterizations. That's more than a lot of movies with huge budgets have going for them.

    Is Heavy Metal "Rebellious"?

I agree, they've been cross-pollinating for so long that metalcore has kind of it's own thing now, not quite punk, not quite metal. My point was, these types of bands (metalcore/deathcore/whatevercore) usually play shows along side punk and hardcore bands and promote punk infused ideologies...

    Is Heavy Metal "Rebellious"?

Well, I guess we'll disagree then. I see a clear ideological and stylistic link to punk, more so than to metal.

    Is Heavy Metal "Rebellious"?

Whitechapel aren't exactly metal though. They are apart of a genre that is the next logical step from bands like Earth Crisis. Just as they were the logical step from crossover bands like Cro-Mags and Sheer Terror. Other than that, I see your point but I don't consider metalcore to be metal.

Comparing Potential Systems for a "Serenity"/"Firefly"-based Campaign

I like unisystem for TV show campaigns. It works really well and is a ruleset found in numerous pop-culture turned rpgs. However, I second both Savage Worlds and FATE for firefly.

    The Mystery of The katana

Well, nothing exactly like yakuza fighting demons but keep in mind that this genre suffers from hypersexualisation and showcases campy gore. Recently I've enjoyed Princess Samurai (A bunch of Yakuza rape some girls, so a cyborg is made out of raped/murdered girls to seek revenge), One Chanbara...

    The Mystery of The katana

Chanbara fantasy has brainwashed me into thinking katana wielding yakuza fighting demons and mecha is the coolest thing ever. I like the katana because of the camp qualities usually associated with Chanbara movies. I'm sure any kid growing up with Asian cinema would say the same.

    Is Heavy Metal "Rebellious"?

In high school I was into the hardcore scene which always dressed normal. It all stemmed from Henry Rollins and his thoughts about anti-fashion (plain clothing as compared to brands). Looks are deceiving, I would disagree and say that teenage fashion is just accepted as being a "phase" and not...

Games that are more fun to read than to play

Ars Magica Dragon Warriors Mythic Europe and Legend are two great settings but the systems leave a little to be desired imo. Even though I never play them I still routinely read these books for inspiration and flavour.

Why the Modern D&D variants will not attract new players

I always thought 4E did a great job of being understandable and inclusive to new players. A long time friend of mine (who is mentally disadvantaged) got the hang of it with in half-a-session. I also find it hard to believe that a team as talented as paizo's won't be able to provide an...

Letting Players Narrate in the Game?

I've been doing this with "inker" points in my comic-book game. The better you role-play the more beanies or inks you get and thus the more descriptive or narrative control you get. I find it's a great way to further involve players, get them roleplaying more heavily and develop your ability to...

    Why D&D is like pr0n

I don't think it's as big an issue as you're making out. The DM is one person and in a group, majority rules. Individually they might prefer that style of game but adjusting to a player pool's desires is apart of DMing.
