    D&D 3.x Why 3.5 Worked

You appear to be in denial. High level casters just using material from the core 3.5 books were stupidly over powered. Quadratic Wizards (and Druids plus Psions) vs. Linear Fighters were a thing in terms of increasing power levels.

    D&D 3.x Why 3.5 Worked

Oh yes, absolutely. High level spell casters in 3.5 were like Kal-El and General Zod battling above Metropolis in 'Man of Steel' - you are playing a superheroes RPG instead of a fantasy RPG and godlike superheroes at that. The breakpoint came around 9th level but really kicked off at 11th. If...

    D&D 3.x Why 3.5 Worked

You misunderstand me, I DMed 3.5 using many sourcebooks and it was a nightmare. I never ran 3.5 using just the core books, I'm speculating that just using the core books was the only way to maintain sanity. Just to be absolutely clear, I had a huge library of 3.5 books and I allowed all of them...

    D&D 3.x Why 3.5 Worked

That's your experience, it wasn't mine. We discovered class, prestige class and spell combinations that were rampantly broken. High level Psions with Astral constructs and Druids who could cast spells while wild shaped with Giant Animal companions were the straw that broke the camel's back. The...

    D&D 3.x Why 3.5 Worked

Back in the day I both ran and played in high level (level 12+) 3.5 games. 3.5 was broken to hell and back. It was so broken that my own group and I agreed to end a 4 year campaign and take a break from D&D. My break lasted 10 years until 5e; in the intervening period I played and ran other RPGs.

Pathfinder 2E What's the deal with 3rd party PF2E Adventure "support"??

The question for 3pp is whether or not that market is commercially viable. Evidence at the moment says no but it's early days. If there's still no 3pp support one year after release then it's doubtful there ever will be.

Pathfinder 2E What's the deal with 3rd party PF2E Adventure "support"??

The new 4e licence - I can't remember it's name but it was more restrictive than the OGL - put many publishers off producing for 4e. The brand had power but the licence killed interest. PF2 doesn't have that excuse.

Pathfinder 2E What's the deal with 3rd party PF2E Adventure "support"??

I have a lot of 3pp books from the 3e era - from a variety of publishers - that say, in general, 'compatible with the 3e of the first fantasy rpg' or similar. They may not actually say D&D but they align themselves clearly to that brand and game. PF1 associated itself to 3.5 as the...

Pathfinder 2E What's the deal with 3rd party PF2E Adventure "support"??

The reason third party publishers jumped on 3e etc - including PF1 which was marketed as 3.5 continued - was the D&D branding. Branding is key. PF2 is most definitely not being marketed as D&D and is up against 5e which is the D&D juggernaut; people want to play D&D and 5e is the official D&D...

Pathfinder 2E What's the deal with 3rd party PF2E Adventure "support"??

Kobold Press have stated in the past they want to wait a year or so to see how PF2E is doing. In the meantime, they have switched to creating material for 5e.

D&D 5E (2014) The Larger Failure of "Tyranny of Dragons"

D&D 5E (2014) The Larger Failure of "Tyranny of Dragons"

I always begin new PCs at the start of a campaign at 3rd to 5th level depending on the type of game I want to run. When the PCs die - and they do die in my games - I let the new character start at the same level as the deceased character. I use milestone levelling. It all works out very well, my...

D&D 5E (2014) The Larger Failure of "Tyranny of Dragons"

O.K., that's no excuse; I normally homebrew as well. I am currently running Descent into Avernus but I'm only keeping the skeleton of the adventure. I've added my own material, changed the timeline of when things happened and tailored the adventure to my player's tastes. I still think the book...

D&D 5E (2014) The Larger Failure of "Tyranny of Dragons"

What you are explicitly saying here is that in a published adventure you don't like being creative and using your imagination. In a medium that emphasises those qualities. Why even play a tabletop RPG then? What happens when your players inevitably diverge from the published adventure? The mind...

D&D 5E (2014) The Larger Failure of "Tyranny of Dragons"

I would not run one of the hardcovers if I wanted to run something ASAP; you have to read through and understand the material first. To say differently is completely ridiculous. Even Curse of Strahd requires preparation. If anyone wants to run a 5e adventure asap then either use one of the...

D&D 5E (2014) The Larger Failure of "Tyranny of Dragons"

I second this. Try watching Chris Perkins running through the 5e adventures on 'Dice Camera Action', he makes the material his own and diverts wildly from what's published. I've been doing the same thing while running Descent into Avernus and it works very well. So, yeah, Bullocks. With bells on!

AD&D 2E Which is the better fantasy rpg and why: D&D 5e or Pathfinder 2e?

I have. I'm currently running 5e but look forward to returning to Shadow of the Demon Lord soon. 5e and PF2e do D&D style fantasy well - its own genre - but there"s more to fantasy than that.

AD&D 2E Which is the better fantasy rpg and why: D&D 5e or Pathfinder 2e?

I completely agree with the above. Edition war bait. Besides, 5e or PF2E is a binary choice I don't agree with. Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay 1e, 2e or 4e or Shadow of the Demon Lord are - for me - subjectively better fantasy RPGs.
