D&D 5E (2014) Do you want your DM to fudge?

I wouldn't mind my DM fudging the rolls on occasion, if something happens that the DM failed to take into consideration, and that that would make the game less enjoyable for us. Let's say that the DM rolls damage for my 1st level character during the first encounter, and it turns out that that...

What's The Deal With D&D Translations?

The only downside I could see of translating, is that there could be no real, final rule arbitrations in any other language than English (or whatever languages Jeremy Crawford speaks). But thats' pretty minor compared to making it accessible to those who aren't great at English.

D&D 5E (2014) To fudge or not to fudge: that is the question

Of course. But generally, monsters are designed to have the chance to kill players, correct? And if in general, that's how you play, and if you generally follow the rules which means that ranged attacks can't knock someone prone ... And then design an encounter where enemies do normal ranged...

D&D 5E (2014) To fudge or not to fudge: that is the question

But during regular attacks the outcome is always uncertain. If you hit a character with 1 HP, it's unlikely that the character will die. Even with a critical hit, it would take some bad luck to get damage that high.

D&D 5E (2014) To fudge or not to fudge: that is the question

I think I originally used an arrow as an example, so non-lethal damage would be out of the question.

D&D 5E (2014) To fudge or not to fudge: that is the question

But there's no practical difference. In one case, you fudge the dice so they deal less damage. In the other case, you roll an attack, hit, look at the PC's HP, see that it is one, and decide that instead of dealing 10 damage the attack will knock the PC unconscious. Both are changing the rules...

D&D 5E (2014) To fudge or not to fudge: that is the question

The rules do. Sure you could deal damage that would kill the character and then say that they just do not die, but I really see no practical difference in changing the game rules on the fly and fudging the die, both to achieve exactly the same effect. You either decide that 10 damage does in...

    D&D 5E (2014) Would you change a monster's hit points mid-fight?

In our group, it's not uncommon to go several sessions without combat, so getting to spend those resources might not be a detriment then :P It goes in waves, really. Depending on how the campaigns run. I mean, usually that'd mean that when there is a combat, there will be plenty of opportunity...

    D&D 5E (2014) Interrupting spellcasting

I might allow someone to use Ready Action to hit a spellcaster when the person starst casting a spell with the intention of disrupting it. If the attack hit, I'd say, half damage (since you're aiming to disrupt specifically), but the spellcaster has to make a concentration check or have the...

D&D 5E (2014) To fudge or not to fudge: that is the question

A PC can be killed outright if they receive a crit when they've got low HP. I think the goblins in that encounter did 5 damage, so if the 8 HP Wizard is at 1 HP and receives a crit ... it's instant death.

    D&D 5E (2014) Would you change a monster's hit points mid-fight?

I know that most of the players (except maybe 1) would be pretty disappointed if they didn't get to act in the combat. Of course, depending on the circumstances, I might also just throw in a few additional monsters.

    D&D 5E (2014) Would you change a monster's hit points mid-fight?

I'd be especially inclined to do this in our group. We can sometimes go for 5+ sessions with no combat, and when it finally happens, if I miscalculated the HP and the monster goes down before everyone has had a chance to do something, I might just add some HP (or throw in additional monsters) to...

D&D 5E (2014) To fudge or not to fudge: that is the question

I fudge occasionally, but only to increase the fun for players, never because they "beat" my plan or because I dislike what they're doing. For instance, if I were playing with 1st level characters, there's an ambush, and the goblin rolls a crit on the first shot and instantly kills the low-hp...

D&D 5E (2014) Warlock Higher Level Spellcasting: Too easy to counter/dispel or effective?

If this thing happens once in a while, there's no issue. Getting shut down every now and then isn't an issue, it just means you gotta be able to adapt to different situations, use different tactics, and so on. If this happens virtually every fight, you don't have a Warlock issue, you have a DM...

D&D 5E (2014) Magic Initiate - A guide to an underestimated (and cool) feat

I love Magic Initiate. Recently played a Paladin that I wanted to flavour a bit like a paladin from Paksenarrion ... so I took Magic Initiate (variant human), chose Light, Firebolt and Shield. Flavoured Firebolt as some form of divine light attack.

D&D 5E (2014) Best FR novels of all time?

Second whoever mentioned Erin M. Evans. Her books about Farideh the Warlock (starting with Brimstone Angel) are really well-written, have nice characters, good story. They feel a bit more modern in a sense as well, there's one character that's gay (nothing that's made a fuss of, the person just...

D&D 5E (2014) [Forgotten Realms] The Wall of the Faithless

If I DM'd a Forgotten Realms campaign, I'd treat the whole "lipservice" thing as just that: someone who's goes to church, says the words, but acts contrary to it. I wouldn't require players to specifically worship in-game, as long as they don't reject deities. But if someone lives according to...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5th Edition Intelligence

I totally agree with this. An 8 Charisma character might be extremely talkative, nice and funny, but it doesn't mean the character has a forceful personality or is at all persuasive in arguments. Personally, I see Intelligence 8 as somewhat below average. They get a -1 modifier, so they can do...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5th Edition Intelligence

The first two are covered completely by the rules and the mechanics of the game. HP is determined by Con, damage is determined by Str (or Dex). The third is not covered at all. I'd totally let a person play an 8 Cha character that's super beautiful (whatever counts as beauty in the setting)...
