    D&D 5E (2014) Fabricate: a world change spell

Coal is a mineral by definition...so you would 1/10th it anyways. The important thing here is fabricate does not TRANSMUTE material, it merely converts existing, per say 'raw' materials into other shapes/forms that to people might be more beneficial. Converting a stone slab into stone blocks...

D&D 5E (2014) Can you concentrate on a spell while resting?

Mearls actually put this one to bed...

    D&D 5E (2014) Hard Mode Campaigning

The game is pretty much there without any changes. Simply rule 0 hp is death, or you only get 1 death save.

    D&D 5E (2014) Hard Mode Campaigning

They must really like Dark Souls. In all seriousness, play however you/the group finds fun. I prefer Eberron high-fantasy action. Some prefer nitty, gritty Greyhawk, others hack and slash Faerun. The system can handle it all.

    D&D 5E (2014) Hard Mode Campaigning

Just be careful. With rules like that (which are fine) the game will devolve into 15 minute days. They will rest until fully healed then head back to the dungeon for a room or two, blow everything to survive and then rest again for a week. Sounds fun...

D&D 5E (2014) Access to Ability Boosting Items in your game

I would take the farm as well. In whatever form the Belt of Giant's Stength takes (22 or 24) I'd bet its in the DMG. It does make sense, as its precedent is already set in the PHB with the Barbarian's rage ability. The original question wasn't whether 1st level characters could get it (of...

D&D 5E (2014) Access to Ability Boosting Items in your game

The problem does exacerbate at higher levels as I am sure there will be Belt of Giant Strength that might raise the caps to 20/22.

D&D 5E (2014) I'm just sayin', the concentration mechanic makes it WAY easier to balance spells

Followed by 2 hours of "wait... does haste stack with blessing of fervor and the archeologists luck bonus.... but what about prayer? Oh and my magic item gives me a morale bonus... and he has cover, does the ogre provide cover? I forgot about the +2 from my boots 2 rounds ago, so I wouldnt...

D&D 5E (2014) Access to Ability Boosting Items in your game

The Evil DM(TM) in me wants to allow this.... "Oh Gauntlets of Ogre power, awesome... nah go ahead and respect that dump stat to str... sure." "A few sessions later gauntlets get stolen or disjoined. Oh your str is a 9? You can no longer be a barbarian... sorry.. you lose all class features...

D&D 5E (2014) Access to Ability Boosting Items in your game

I do see the concern in organized play because of the respec aspect... but ultimately of little concern. Why? 3 attuned items. Do players really want to waste an attunement slot on something to boost a dump stat? Because if the fighter creates his char with 18 charisma and 9 str, just...

    D&D 5E (2014) Sleep Spell 1st-Level, No-Save Death Spell?

Funny story: In my Lost Mines game, the party had just entered into the lair where Sildar Hallwinter was being kept (having been beaten and tortured by goblins and at 1 HP). The lead goblin held Sildar over the 10ft drop and threatened to drop him. As they were conversing the wizard decided...

D&D 5E (2014) Encounter Building math: or I killed 2 PCs last night.

Ive made the same mistake. We are used to older edition leeway. But with bounded accuracy, monsters stay deadly much longer, which means monsters above the PCs pay grade tend to be very strong.

    D&D 5E (2014) Sleep Spell 1st-Level, No-Save Death Spell?

Powerful indeed but instead of save or suck, its roll well or suck. In 5E most encounters will be above the 'pay grade' of the HP limits of this spell. Even using a 9th level spell slot resulting in 21d8 HP, the average is only 84... thats equivalent to a CR4-5 monster? Not very good use of a...

    D&D 5E (2014) Fabricate: a world change spell

Fabricate always was a great spell. Creates things in a jiffy. But I dont think its as game breaking as you think. First it only creates material from provided material that's the same kind. So Trees->wood furniture, or stone-> building materials. You still need to have the original...

D&D 5E (2014) Need some good "guardian" monsters for a treasure vault (4th lvl group)

I agree... although 5E seems to be better in this regard. Even though monster CR matters much more, theres not nearly as many save or suck encounters on either end. Seems 5e is more slobernocker, less holy hand grenade. But any memorable encounter is a good set piece... you can turn a low...

There is no wrong way to play, but...

Methinks you might be being a bit harsh... ...although now that you mention it, I change every book I read to suit me. And every movie I watch I re-film scenes. I get your point... but A LOT of DM's ran Tomb of Horrors by the book, time and time again. If they hadn't, and jsut wanted their...
