    D&D 5E (2014) Confessions of a guilty conscience DM

This. As DM's we just hand the characters a red button that says DO NOT PUSH. The rest is up to them.

    D&D 5E (2014) The Mysterious 8th Ray

Dont have my PHB handy but previous editions had : 8 Struck by two rays; roll twice more, ignoring any “8” results.

    D&D 5E (2014) Confessions of a guilty conscience DM

This is a problem with conversion. 5E handles stats differently, and those stat decreases can REALLY hurt... over MANY levels. If they wanted oldskool they got it. Either retcon it by making them temporary (they sleep it off) or by giving them access in a session or two to a restoration...

D&D 5E (2014) Princes of the Apocalypse is now Available inAmazon

I think it will be 250+ definitively... but I think they might have wanted to make a standalone players guide, that Adv. Handbook, which was folded into the main book. So it should clock in at 320. So less adventure more splat, but useful. But I think if its more than 36 pages of guidebook...

D&D 5E (2014) Creating good session stopping points

I usually never like to stop when the party rests. It cuts out on a down note, I like to keep the tension high at the end. I have cut sessions short if I think its a great stopping point, usually using any spare time to jsut BS or chat about the game. I like to stop right after I introduce an...

    D&D 5E (2014) Researching Magic Item "recipies"

If a player really wants a magic item, they need to research how to make it, or quest for it. I mean, how did they hear about it anyways... in Skymall?

D&D 5E (2014) Princes of the Apocalypse is now Available inAmazon

Mearls tweeted this could be 320 pages. 38$ for 320 pages is like a PHB. Paizo's adventures sell for $15 and there are 6 per path. $90 per ~576 pages for paizo AP. Or $38 for 320 pages....

    D&D 5E (2014) On initiative count 20...

Yes. Initiative Count 20 indicates a very quick initiative. While some characters may in fact beat this, the odds are many will not. Putting the lair action at 20 allows the majority of the characters the opportunity to react to the new danger.

    D&D 5E (2014) Passive Perception

True. But PP is a quality of life improvement for the players and the DM. Like new features in Windows like drag and drop, or contextual search... not everyone will use them, but the tools are there. Some ppl might still want to use DOS and keep it oldskool while others use a more modernized...

    D&D 5E (2014) Passive Perception

Actually.... Im kinda curious about that. Im not saying no DCs for checks... but specifically perception checks. Example time... tell me which adventure you would prefer: Option A This large, roughly 40 x 40 stone chamber has high vaulted ceilings. Six massive 5' stone pillars hold up the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Passive Perception

With those telegraphs or bread crumbs, yes that is acceptable. But Ive seen plenty of adventures where in random room B for some random reason, in the corner of the wall is some DC 40 hidden compartment that has some random magic item. That bugs the hell out of me.

How's D&D Working Out For You? First official feedback survey looks at CLASSES and FEATS!

Intersting survey. By the bulk of questions regarding balance, it would be odd to see reprints of the PHB change power levels/feats/ class abilities. My guess is they are looking to see if reprints should be errata only or updates for a living system.

    D&D 5E (2014) Passive Perception

Correct. For me, Passive Perception will never "spot" a hidden compartment under a rug. I agree, obscure, hidden treasure serves no purpose. When I read adventures that put super hard locked chests or high DC perception checks to find items, I wonder why... why design the item or put it...

    D&D 5E (2014) Scorching hot dice

In a fight in Hoard of the Dragon Queen, my party (down to only rogue and barbarian) was facing Langdregosa and Mondath in the cave. Lang had cornered the rogue, who promptly fell to his breath weapon. The halfing rolled his death save... 1...re-roll 1's, 20. Stand up. His action, roll to...

    D&D 5E (2014) Passive Perception

Agree. If there is a hidden compartment under the rug in a room. I would assign a high DC to finding it via a curosry search, say 18. If the PC says they are searching the room, quickly, I apply a penalty, if they are taking their time, i leave the DC. If they specifically say they are moving...

    D&D 5E (2014) Passive Perception

Yes it is more satisfying for the player to spot it. But if they werent looking, and the DC exceeded their PP, then they trip it. Maybe it will make them more vigilant. If I design a dungeon that includes traps, usually I place a minor, but difficult to detect trap very early on. Maybe that...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5E: Whips?

It is possible, I think Mythbusters verified this one. As the whip tail wraps around the object, it can be made so the larger portion overlaps the smaller portion, like wrapping a string around your finger, and then overlapping the string so any weight applied in a downward force exerts that...
