The biggest issue with the new Character Builder:

You didn't buy it, you subscribed to the service, there's a significant legal difference. To make it clear, again, the legal matter is with regard to a file which contains copyrighted material and whether or not a piece of software which modifies the classic CB would fall under the DMCA. The...

The biggest issue with the new Character Builder:

The file being distributed has certainly been created using methods that violate wizards terms of use (which may or may not constitute fraud, see US vs Wiseguys), there's also the potential copyright violation with the downloadable file being distributed. There could be a fair use argument for...

The biggest issue with the new Character Builder:

At the point said people have added all of essentials, you'll be right. Until then they've added the 'easy' stuff, which were made easier by the frameworks already being in place in the Classic CB.

What if Dragon and Dungeon go online only?

So you print to pdf via the viewer rather than downloading a pre-made pdf. You can then ocr the file (if needed). Apart from a couple of extra steps this makes no difference to what we have now. OCR'd pdfs are less user friendly but if printed out are generally of similar quality (I say...

Wizards: Musings on the new DDi disaster

Edit: DannyAlcatraz has already made my point in a more stylish way. But then as an American lawyer he gets bonus style. Only barristers get to look good in court over here.

Wizards: Musings on the new DDi disaster

I'm not happy with the new Character Builder because of current rules bugs and the design choices on how it outputs to pdf. That said, I'm even less impressed with the sort of comment below: There's no proof to this. No evidence and nothing but speculation. This sorty of thing (accusing...

    New Character Builder from WotC!

So what should they have used? Flash...doesn't work on the ipad. Java...doesn't work on the ipad. HTML5...not there yet (and certainly wasn't when they began developing the new tool). There is/was no ideal solution for them here.

    Hasbro makes money, everyone wins

If you're using it offline then the tool and its data is downloaded onto the user's computer. If the tool and data are on the computer then, perforce, it is not helping against piracy. As a web-based tool it is considerably harder to pirate than anything put wholesale onto hard drives. Pirate...

I seem to be missing the point on the online CB

With $30k+ of RPG purchases over the years, $70 a year for DDI seems extremely good for what I get out of it. For 4E my biggest purchase has been a large (400+) amount of D&D miniatures, though I drew the line at a colossal red given the prices they're going for. Even without the $10 dip and...

    D&D 4E Houseruling a Conan Style Game for 4E

This part really does not feel at all like Hyboria. There might be some pastiche where this sort of thing happens but it's definitely not classic Howard Hyboria (or anything i've heard of with the setting/characters) Same here.

    Excellent point on WotC mishandling

On the hobby's fracturing, this has been the case for a long time (see early Runequest fans versus D&D fans for an example). White Wolf fans (x edition vs y edition), D&D 1e vs 2e, vs 3e vs 4e vs Palladium, vs, Palladium vs..everyone, Traveller vs traveller (vs megatraveller, vs traveller...

Report on the Open Loot Table System

I just read this. I like giving 'stuff' to my players (handouts, maps etc.) so having treasure cards might be a good extension of this. I know I'd want to discuss it with them to see what their thoughts were. On the one hand it makes it very random, on the other it's giving them 'stuff to do'...

    Excellent point on WotC mishandling

The chance of the above happening is zero. The very idea of it is...odd to say the least. There are some serious misunderstandings of how literary publishing works and where the 'worth' in a publishing house really is. The number of movies to come out of published novels is miniscule. The number...

    Excellent point on WotC mishandling

I'll just quote your posts so you can see where you fell down: This, the above, would be you directly linking, through your sentence structure and language usage, 4e and 'firing the customer'. When called upon to provide any proof you claimed: So, a rumour, or possibly a blog post...

    Disappointed D&D Insider Customer

This is pretty directly contradicted by the sales history of the industry in general, even moreso the last 10 years and 3e/3.5 and 4e specifically. Crunch heavy books (with that 13th level version of a hydra and another fighter feat for the pick-wielding half-elf) have been the runaway best...

    Excellent point on WotC mishandling

So, you don't remember for sure but 4E's designers set out to 'fire' their customer base by having 3e drop the sacred cows. So, WotC planned to fire their customers for 4e 10+ years ago. Man that's some strategic planning there. Or, you know, codswallop.

November 16th release for Web-based Character Builder

It may be no for you, or to your perception. That doesn't mean it's a 'no' for their business strategy and short/long-term goals. 1) Loss of X percent of customers and income from them. 2) Ill Will from Y percent of customers. -- A) New customers and new income B) Easier updates C)...
