When and what game did you start with.

Traveller. The "Little Black Books", plus Books 4 and 5. 1981 or 1982. Someone at the Science Fiction Society wanted to try something that wasn't D&D...

D&D 5E (2014) PHB Humans are the most mechanically boring race. How do we fix this?

I can see Human characters getting "privilege", social" or "convenience" bonuses when interacting with the rest of the gameworld. Example: Clothing and equipment is designed for humans. Any other race has to get their stuff specially made (which will cost more money). Example: Some...

    D&D 5E (2014) How much is 1.000.000 GP?

It was foolishly greedy to specify Gold Pieces. Those are coins. There's nothing to say that the dwarves have to use PURE gold in their coins. In fact, it's really hard to make pure gold coins (they're usually an alloy of some kind). Therefore, I suggest that 10% gold would be more than...

This "experiment" may provide some inspiration Spear vs Sword

D&D 5E (2014) How should I improve my Lore Bard/DS Sorcerer Spell list?

Yes. Get more healing. Always get more healing. Other players appreciate it - and you never know when a few more heals are going to be necessary. ESPECIALLY if your DM likes long/frequent combats. No. You don't need Find Greater Steed. BUT it does look cool, so keep it if that's important...

    Any good sandbox module published?

Would you consider the Fall of Whitecliff? It packs a lot of information into a small-ish publication and is "Pay what you Want" on DriveThru RpG

D&D General Setting a campaign on a river

How about a giant version of the Diving Bell Spider? This giant spider could be both useful and terrifying for those who explore the underwater ruins.

D&D General Setting a campaign on a river

It's a very good idea. A sandbox, but with limits that will allow the GM to retain some sanity. And - of course - somewhere along the river is an insane military/religious leader that the PCs have been instructed to kill "You’re an errand boy, sent by grocery clerks, to collect a bill."...

    Quasi-Playtest: OSR Fighter

What? Why are your kobolds suicidal? Are they clinically depressed after seeing this wise-cracking paragon of martial virtue? These are the actions I would expect after the Fighter has taken cover. 1. Kobolds breath sigh of relief. Messenger runs off to alert rest of the tribe and/or their...

    Quasi-Playtest: OSR Fighter

How does this fighter survive against missile weapons? A moderately-intelligent opponent is going to throw darts, or axes, or daggers, etcetera. Let's say the fighter encounters a squad of 5 kobolds. They throw 10 darts before he can close into melee range. Can he only defend against 3 darts?

OSR Recommendations for four hour adventure

You can download every copy of Dungeon for free - and it's all legal! Archived Dungeons I would recommend MONSTERQUEST from Dungeon number 10. It is a fun/short adventure. You get to play the monsters!

D&D 5E (2014) What is the best class for a single class only campaign?

Rogues are (IMHO) the obvious choice. You'd have a Thieves' Guild! With lots of specialists. Cat Burglars, con men, forgers, tough guys.... Don't limit the game to just "heists" or "cons". Scenarios could be taken from Mission Impossible and other espionage genres. You could do the "Fast...

    D&D General TPK or Imprison

If it's possible to close the teleportation portal.... Why wouldn't the Duergar close it at their end? "Sir! We've lost control of Outpost X. Should we send a scouting force?" "No. We have all the necessary information. That would just lead to dead scouts. Close down the teleportation...

Med. Fantasy Equivalent of a Smart Phone

It would be IMMENSELY rude to ignore Merlin, King Arthur, and Lady Guinevere. However, Galahad might allow himself to be distracted by the Court Musicians who are playing in the background...

    Quasi-Playtest: OSR Fighter

It seems a little odd that armour requires an action. I can see that using a SHIELD or a PARRY might need an action but something like chainmail should have an effect even if the wearer isn't expecting an attack. Could you explain the thinking behind that choice? Also, I can see Yora's point...

    D&D 5E (2014) Espionage & Spies in D&D

"Good Evening, Magister Phelps. The paintings you are studying show a Monk named JOHN THE CLAWED. He has recently acquired a highly dangerous artifact. " " In seven days, he will hold an auction where various evil entities will bid for this device. We believe it to be currently held at the...

What podcasts do you listen to (and why?)

The show gives a swift biography) Western Way of War (military & political professionals talk about modern warfare) Overly Sarcastic Podcast (the YouTube channel has fun with podcasting) Decoder Ring Theatre (which...

D&D 5E (2014) A good method to prevent Murder Hobos

IMHO, the state of "Murder Hobo" represents the inability of players to see any link between their Characters and the rest of the gameworld. It's not JUST because they've never faced consequences for criminal actions by PCs (although this is a big part of the problem). The big problem is...
