D&D 5E (2014) Unexpected but (mostly) awesome new rules in Basic

One of my favorite things about the 5e basic rules that I haven't seen much comment on yet: You can only concentrate on one spell at a time. Almost every buff requires concentration. This is awesome. It will sane-ify high level play so frickin much, and prevent casters from becoming better...

Tell me what's on this map.

I've seen men flogged for less.

Tell me what's on this map.

Why does the Aquaduct end in rubble? What turned Pinosh Agal into a husk of its former glory?

    d20 psionics

To clear up the question on everyone's mind: Yes, I was able to acquire a copy of the skills and feats psionics system at some point within the last decade.

Tell me what's on this map.

I love the idea of The Waste as adrift in time! What if it was still out of synch with time and space from Jhar's great spell? Maybe it's a vast desert, ten times larger from within than it appears without... and for every day spent there, only hours pass beyond its borders. At the edges of the...

Tell me what's on this map.

Steeldragons, thanks for the kind words! And hey, everyone, there's another thing I'm curious about. What made the Waste and the Scar up in the northeast corner of the map? What do you find if you travel down into the Scar's depths? What's the Red Watchtower watching over, and why is there a...

Tell me what's on this map.

(Click for higher res version. Crossposted on RPG.net.) I know what I think is on this map. But you're going to tell me what's actually on it. So, tell me: Who built the lighthouse in the Devil Hills, and why is it abandoned?

    dwarf as a class

Eh? To my ears, that reads like "What if I want my dwarf to be a wizard, but I don't want to make use of the options that allow my dwarf to be a wizard?"

So, what are you doing Oct. 8-10th?

Heh, I do remember it! I also think I ran out of spells before the climactic final battle. I was a bit trigger happy that day... :o Unfortunately I haven't been around Raleigh for a game day in quite a while—I'm living in Chicago now and only back home in NC for a month or two our of the year...

So, what are you doing Oct. 8-10th?

Hmmm, sounds really cool! But I'm afraid I can't support any cause or business that uses Papyrus un-ironically. (Kidding! Kidding. Jeeze.) (Kinda.)

Sandboxing and bringing wonder and the unknown into DMing

I can't believe Nameless1 hasn't mentioned this, because I just saw him link to it in another thread. The Western Marches It's a really cool style of GMing that I think fits perfectly—to a 'T'—with what you're looking for. It's a sandbox-style method designed for large and inconsistent groups...

    Dozens of Minions, Bad Idea?

It has precedent -- look at the Halfling Stout. Also, as it is, there's nothing in the game between a minion (1 hit kill) and a standard monster (4 hit kill); nothing wrong with filling the void a bit. Personally, I think a fight against a hoard of resiliant zombie minions could be rather...

    Half-elves and +2 CON

Not only that, but they are able to parse idiomatic use of language, too!

Artificer Up (Playtest Version, not Final)

Restorative Infusion is a little 'whoah!' for a 2nd level utility. 20 temp hit points is a lot! At 2nd level, that could be around 80% of a wizard's hit point total. Dancing Weapon seems clunky and a bit borked. As it is written, you don't actually need to be proficient with the weapon you use...

How often do you see Opportunity Attacks?

Occasionally, we try to provoke an OA on purpose. When the paladin's laid his divine challenge and Enfeebling Strike or Fearsome Smite on someone, and the Fighter with his high AC or halfling wizard with his bonus against oportunity attacks and reroll power provokes an OA, the average damage...

    Eldritch Blast + Fox's Cunning?

Isn't the point that the "melee or ranged weapon" range negates the option of using a non-weapon basic attack like Magic Missile or Eldritch Blast? Or is it just that they had no good way of saying "the range of your basic attack" without using the "melee or ranged weapon" wording?

    Warlock/Blood Mage

A warlock's Intelligence will probably only be a single +1 behind his Charisma, anyway. And blood mage powers are excellent for a striker. Compare the 10 ongoing damage action point boost from the blood mage with the 5 ongoing damage action point boost from the Infernal pact path. Not to mention...

What is the deal with recharge?

Monster Manual page 7, middle of the first column. Basically, you roll a d6 each time the monster's turn comes up. If you roll any of the numbers in the little pictures of dice, the power's available for use again.

    Monsters have Second Wind?

Unless Second Wind is written up as a power in the monster's statblock, it doesn't have it.

    Evil Minions?

Don't forget to do something about the fixed damage output. It seems to be in the neighborhood of 4 +1/5 levels.
