(Win pdf books!) Now closed (except for some book-keeping)

Ah, dungeons... such a staple of fantasy roleplaying, right? And yet, when you look at classical fantasy fiction, where are the real dungeons? Sure, you get the abandoned dwarven mines in Tolkien's work, or the occasional cave complex, or the medieval prison the heroes need to escape from. But...

    Quirky Food Habits

When eating a KitKat bar, I break each individual bar off, and nibble off the chocolate on all 4 sides, before eating the wafer part. (The chocolate layer on the top and bottom is typically too thin to nibble off, although I've been known to peel off the top and bottom wafer layers, to maximize...

    Is Vow of Poverty broken?

Yeah, that's more or less what I'm converging to as well. Essentially, assume that everything that goes into the sack is already donated. "I'm sorry, but I cannot give you that healing potion I am carrying in my sack. That potion is property of the poor orphans of Mudsville, and I cannot just...

    Is Vow of Poverty broken?

Well, not *exactly* the same. Besides, great truths deserve to be repeated. ;) Meanwhile, I still don't have an answer to the eminently practical question I asked earlier: How is the VoP character supposed to donate his share of the proceeds of the adventure, if he isn't even allowed to carry...

The Paladin killed someone...what to do?

Sounds good. Make sure not to spring the additional consequences on the player as a surprise. It's important that he realizes this is all part of the same package. Otherwise it might feel like he's being punished twice.

    Is Vow of Poverty broken?

I would rephrase that: The player should not be punished because his VoP character chose the greater good. This leaves open the possibility of the PC making a true sacrifice for the greater good. Otherwise, you may as well say "the DM should never kill a PC because he chose the greater good"...

    Is Vow of Poverty broken?

Keep in mind that "unfair" may not even come into play. It's pretty easy to come up with a scenario where in-game circumstances beyond the DM's control may put the player in such a situation. For example, what if the party is heading for a TPK, and the only one left standing is the VoP...

    Is Vow of Poverty broken?

Even against his own gods wishes? I don't think so... It's not a sacrifice if you get so many powers in return that you don't want to give them up. The real test of faith should be whether the PC is willing to give up those powers to answer his god's call. Of course, out-of-game, such choice...

    Is Vow of Poverty broken?

Well that case at least is easy. Administering a potion to someone else strictly speaking is only helping the *other* person use it. So the VoP character never goes against his own vow. A trickier situation would be if the other person had a *wand* of CMW. In that case, the VoP character would...

    Is Vow of Poverty broken?

Screw that! Sure, he can *ask*, but if he turns down a direct request from his god, he may as well kiss all his god-given powers goodbye. The Vow of Poverty is a promise of the PC to his god, to the greater glory of that god. If the god has other plans for him, who is the PC to refuse his god...

What is the minimum level would you play if you were never to gain xp again?

So you're saying your PC's go adventuring to gain XP?

The Paladin killed someone...what to do?

Have you read the posts by the DM in this thread? When you do so, you'll see that he sounds like a very reasonable man, who is *not* out to get his paladin player... As for Wulf's "what did you expect to happen?"... it's clear that the DM did not expect the paladin to start summarily executing...

The Paladin killed someone...what to do?

Personally, I'm kinda hoping the halfling does kick the bucket. Just so the paladin can be accosted the next morning by a distraught, sobbing halfling mother, accusing him of mudering her only son. Maybe dragging around the rusty sword her dear departed husband left her when he died in the...

The Paladin killed someone...what to do?

So, could we please stop arguing about what happened and why it happened and get back to the original question: what to do? Herreman the Wise already posted an excellent recap of the most important facts. Don't even bother posting to this thread unless you've read it... Let me just summarize...

    Is Vow of Poverty broken?

In-game, I would say that any paladin worth his salt would gladly give up whatever personal vow he made, and all the benefits that come with it, in order to "defeat the marauding demon army that is destroying the kingdom" at the request of his own church. Personal sacrifice should pale in...

    Is Vow of Poverty broken?

So then how would donating a share of treasure work in general, if the VoPper cannot even hold on to his share of teh treasure until he reaches civilization? Does he need to ask one of his party members to hold on to the loot until he reaches an appropriate charity?

    Clogged Combats

Hope I combined the right question and answer there... CoH, could you give us some more info on where the problem lies? How many rounds in a typical combat, how many minutes per round per player? Do you tend to use many opponents with cover and mobility, or a single tough opponent, etc...

The Paladin killed someone...what to do?

Yeah, I noticed that as well. I suspect there was some degree of metagaming going on with the paladin player. I don't think the paladin would have "roughed up" the prisoner if the player hadn't known something was going on upstairs. And if the paladin *did* know something was going on upstairs...
