If you want to stock up on your GURPS library...

Hi Gene! I was just about to send you a link to this thread. Good timing! :)

Hmm, apparently not? :\ Or did you just forget to upgrade the Phiz from Alternate to "Contender"?

Stat Generation - your wierd and wacky ways

Don't think this one's been mentioned yet - a variant of the standard array: DM writes up N sets of acceptable stat combinations Players roll a dN to pick one of these. Various reroll methods can be added to this (e.g. best of 2 sets, or 3 rolls allowed but you have to stick with your last...

Stat Generation - your wierd and wacky ways

I'd love to try that one as well - provided you don't have to pick race and class *before* rolling the stats. :D

Stat Generation - your wierd and wacky ways

Another vote for the playing cards method. Well, the simplest version anyway: Take a deck of playing cards and remove all but the 1-6 cards. Deal 6 stacks of 4 cards, remove the lowest card from each stack, add each stack and assign as desired. Note that for each individual stat, this gives...

Too much overlap with Carapace/Zygom? Now *those* are cool! Could we upgrade these from "alternate" status, pretty please? They're quite different from most of the other plant we have in there, and very flavorful. *Much* better than "yet another plant critter that tries to kill and eat you"...

Ooh... got a new idea! How many fantasy stories contain a guardian tree, planted as a ward to imprison a great evil? Now there's a cool plant stereotype that hasn't been covered yet! Let's see... immobile, telepathic, LG, only mildly intelligent (they never seem to be great talkers, once you...

These two sound quite similar. Maybe swap one of these out, for the sake of diversity? Of the two, I like the Carapace least - sounds more like a disease (e.g. Lycanthropy) than an actual plant. We never see its plant form, it doesn't behave like a plant, it doesn't look like a plant... Edible...

    WOTC's own creature-by-poll

Interestingly, there is almost *no* correlation with our own What monster types would you like to see more of poll from a few weeks ago. Sure Aberrations came in a distant #2 in our poll, and Fey (our clear #1) came in third place in the WotC poll, but friggin *Dragons* was their #2 and dead...

If I remember correctly, they had cotton or wax stuffed in their ears or something. I guess it just goes to show that (1) people in the middle ages were a lot dumber, or (2) dogs were cheaper to come by than wax or ropes. ;)

Yup. The website I listed earlier has a very exhaustive summary of its medicinal properties and legends. (For lots of other cool plants too, for that matter!). The HP version seemed a rather wimpy strain. Medieval lore claimed that the scream of the mandrake would instantaneously kill or...

Heh - I didn't even remember that they had Mandragora in HP2. :) Mandrake's been a personal favorite "mythical medieval plant" long before HP ever came on the scene...

Gee , I can just imagine a wizard's tower surrounded my a nicely manicured lawn. A lawn composed of Boring Grass, Grab Grass and Witherweed! :] :D Uhmmm... yeah... This one just seems rather silly and pointless to me. So it's like ivy... ivy with a laser beam! Just doesn't make...

Good point. This could be another environmental hazard rather than a creature you'd encounter in combat. E.g. if you stay in one place for too long (and that includes pitching camp), you'll become Entangled after x minutes. Again, these would probably fall under Poison rather than creatures...

How about an "inspired by the real world" theme? The giant sundew, giant venus fly-trap and giant pitcher plan would all fit in there. Plus my bamboo shoots and corpse flower.

    "Okay, I'll just lie here..."

I 100% agree! Giving players who are out of the action an NPC to run makes for a fun change of pace for the player, it relieves some of the burden from the DM, and combat typically gets far more exciting because all of a sudden you get NPC flunkies with personality and tactics. Having to sit...

Radical Shift in Alignment Rules midgame. Thoughts? Advice?

If your players are ok with the change, and alignment hasn't really played much of a role so far, I see no reason you couldn't switch mid-game. Just act as if that's the way the world has always worked...

No love for my suggestions? :( Or do you prefer to narrow the playingfiled a bit more before we start thinking up new creatures? Any idea on copyright issues with triffids and/or the plant from Little Shop of Horrors?

    Where did -10 come from?

You're welcome. :) Note that if you extend Disabled into negative instead of positive hp territory, the buffer between Disabled and Dead won't scale with levels, and is back to a fixed 10 hp. Not to mention the fact that you've now upped the power level of PC's compared to monsters and most...
