D&D 5E (2014) Magic Resistance: What was Old is New

just coming into this for the first time, I do like ver 3 for its clean/simple execution but on the other hand that pretty much is what current magic resistance is, its just done through adv/dis and this way is more scalable, but fundamentally its the same mechanic. Its not really the spirit of...

How the Monsters Have Changed in the 2025 Monster Manual: Aboleth

I appreciate this kind of deep dive because a lot of the changes here are subtle and yet have a pretty strong impact on how this monster might "feel" in an encounter or combat. A few of my own notes: 1) Eldritch Restoration: This one is huge from a recurring villain standpoint. While it was...

    D&D 5E (2014) Us Building a "Fundamentally 5E" Setting From Scratch Together

I’ll do one more small one. The White Door The white door is made of white alabaster, unadorned save for the simple brass door knob. The door appears standing on a flat surface, and looking at either side reveals the same image. The door can be opened from either side, one side opens to a...

    D&D 5E (2014) Us Building a "Fundamentally 5E" Setting From Scratch Together

In peoples dreams exists the “round man”. A short human looking fellow with a large round face. Always dressed for high fashion. He never speaks, but has appeared in the dreams of every person in the world at one point or another. Even planar travelers report dreaming of him when they visit the...

Dragonlance "You walk down the road, party is now level 2."

Honestly I’ve used milestone leveling for so long I could never go back to xp…PCs level up when it’s time for them to level up….often in the Down times between big arcs

D&D 5E (2014) How do you handle monster knowledges in your game?

So the jist from the e summary is I give out WAY WAY WAY more monster info than most people here. Looks like the majority of posters only give basic info and very little actual stat notes

Monsters & More: An In-Depth Review of the 2025 D&D Monster Manual

and others would say "that's a chart I would never use, while the flumph lore is cool!" Again, the book caters to a wide audience, tough calls have to be made. I can fully respect that you think the decision should have gone the other way, but ultimately these decisions are rarely arbitrary...

Monsters & More: An In-Depth Review of the 2025 D&D Monster Manual

and so is chart X, monster Y, artwork Z. Its never just one, that's the point. Someone has to lay down the limit, and the others fill it the best they can. and of course those people will always beg the supervisor "please please, just one more page, this is SUPER important", and at some point...

D&D 5E (2014) How do you handle monster knowledges in your game?

How much info should PCs glean from a high monster knowledge check? If a Pc rolls a 25 or even a 30, do they learn just a few tidbits, every immunity and weakness the monster has....do you just give them the statbook? Just how much can a PC gain about a monster from a monster knowledge check?

Dragonlance "You walk down the road, party is now level 2."

sure, and unfortunately in that case PC early leveling just does not make sense. that's why in those cases I think its better to just have the pcs start at higher levels. then they obtained those levels through the entirety of their backstory, not because they got some milk at the supermarket.

D&D 5E (2014) How do you handle Insight in your game?

I will say that most players I have played with have this expectation that Insight is basically lie detection. That with a single roll you can immediate glean the second an NPC tells a fib. I would say out of all skills in the game, insight is probably the most inflated on what it should be...

Monsters & More: An In-Depth Review of the 2025 D&D Monster Manual

yep and that's why there will always be arguments. for some people, the art is THE reason to buy the book. For others, they couldn't care less. Balancing the demands of a large varied audience is incredibly challenging, not a position I envy.

D&D 5E (2024) What is With Poison?, and Other PHB Conundrums.

Ah I didn't hear that goblins were split between fey and non-fey now. In that case I do agree the issue of confusion is present. That said, the PC casts charm person on a bugbear lets say (and assuming bugbears are now fey...I don't know which ones so using this purely for the example). If the...

Dungeons & Dragons Comments On Possibility of Future Movie Projects

In a market that is so desperate for content they will remake anything that came out even like 5 years ago and will resurrect 70+ year old actors out of retirement.....there is always a chance:)

Dragonlance "You walk down the road, party is now level 2."

The concept of the first two levels being extremely fast isn't a mechanical issue, though it is a narrative one. Ok lvls 1-2 are such easy levels that basically anyone blows through them with no issue. Fine....but now that means most people in the world are lvl3+.....so probably lvl 2 spells...

Monsters & More: An In-Depth Review of the 2025 D&D Monster Manual

Its important to note that....everything in a book is something else that doesn't get in. Page counts are limited by cost, more pages = more cost, and when your running a business those margins matter. If you left creatives unchecked with the reality of business they would make books that were...

D&D 5E (2024) Deadliest Monsters in the 2025 Monster Manual

I'm pleased to see the mummy lord to make the list, as the 2014 mummy lord I think is one of the most over-CRed monsters in the game. Its so insanely low hp for its CR that I have never seen it last a full round.

D&D 5E (2024) What is With Poison?, and Other PHB Conundrums.

This is the point I don't understand. To me this is dirt simple. In 2024, yes charm person doesn't work on goblins (its a clear intention from changing the type). Doesn't mean I have to screw my players. If a player casts charm person on them I would immediately go "oh hey guys, just a reminder...
