D&D 5E (2024) What is With Poison?, and Other PHB Conundrums.

Yeah but this doesn't argue the original point, which is why poison is so expensive. Its expensive because its actually a very large damage bonus to a character, and so were it cheap, players would be heavily incentized to use it constantly. Regardless of whether monster hp has gone up or down...

D&D 5E (2024) What is With Poison?, and Other PHB Conundrums.

Not sure what to tell you. If your attack does 1d8 + 7 (longsword, max strength, dueling style), that's 11.5 damage, 2.5 added on is a 22% buff in your damage. I mean if that's not a solid increase I don't know what is.

    D&D 5E (2014) What is a PC's "CR"?

I think 2/3s level is a reasonable spitball for just standard old PCs. But the only true way to do it is to CR them just like you do monsters. Get their average damage (including all of their nova tricks), get their HP, modify by attack/AC....and then throw in some adjustments for any special...

D&D 5E (2024) What is With Poison?, and Other PHB Conundrums.

Comparing 5e to like 3e characters, it absolutely is. Damage stacking is WAY less prevalent now than it was in previous editions, so in that context being able to add in +1d4 damage to your attacks without concentration is quite powerful.

    D&D 5E (2014) What Makes 5E "5E"?

I would boil down 5e to two core concepts: Bounded Accuracy Rulings not Rules Bounded accuracy includes a lot of the core 5e mechanics: Concentration, Adv/Dis instead of bonuses, a lack of stacking, a removal of a lot of "you can't play if your not X lvl" type mechanics or monsters. All of...

D&D 5E (2024) What is With Poison?, and Other PHB Conundrums.

I mean poison was also overpriced in 3e as well. The problem with things like poison is, yes its only +1d4, but in a world of bounded accuracy its +1d4!!! Aka there aren't a lot of ways to boost your damage (especially non-concentration methods), so having something that can do it on tap is...

D&D 5E (2014) "Surrender or Die" Roared the Barbarian - Making the Opponents Surrender

I looked over Mearl's morale concept. It requires a lot of tracking and rolls, and has a 25% that after a single lowly monster is dropped to 50% health that the entire monster group will flee. I wasn't a big fan, the old 2e morale I think is so much cleaner and simpler.

D&D 5E (2014) "Surrender or Die" Roared the Barbarian - Making the Opponents Surrender

and as we all know, PCs try to be the one-time special case every single session:) I will say, I do like the old school morale rules, they are very simple and yet effective. However, my take on this one is that the OP isn't just looking for a "when do the monsters run" system, they want...

    D&D 5E (2024) Monster Manual 2025 Stat Block Compilation

and interesting question on the arch-hag, what happens if it dies in an area that doesn't allow teleporting or plane shifting. Does it drop to 1 but otherwise just hang around, does the curse still activate?

D&D 5E (2014) "Surrender or Die" Roared the Barbarian - Making the Opponents Surrender

I like the core idea, but I think we can simplify this a bit. Morale Attack: Use can substitute one of your attacks for a morale attack. Roll a Deception/Persuasion/ or Intimidation check. If the results of the check are equal or greater than the opponent's remaining hitpoints, they gain the...

D&D 5E (2024) Check Out The New Monster Manual’s Ancient Gold Dragon

The Vecna fight was a big surprise to me, I did not think that vecna would do as well as it did. Ultimately I think that was a well run mock fight, the players and vecna all tried some smart tactics and spells, nothing super crazy optimal but play I considered reasonable for players that would...

D&D 5E (2024) Check Out The New Monster Manual’s Ancient Gold Dragon

And its a good test to see. Ultimately that test was a pretty worst case scenario for the players, their was 0 prep, they all started clumped together, their dice luck in the first couple of rounds was horrendous (the fact that the fighter got banished with a +21 saving throw not once but twice...

The Gith Are Now Aberrations in Dungeons & Dragons

Personally I have no issue with the change itself. Seems fine with Gith lore, makes them more resistant to Mind Flayers (and they are supposed to be the Mind Flayer hunters after all). I do however agree with Merric that its weird to bring this in to an update that has vaunted backwards...

The Gith Are Now Aberrations in Dungeons & Dragons

I mean...are you sure? Midicholorians invading reality from the far realm a long time ago, infecting and growing within people, giving them strange otherwordly powers. Seems to check the boxes to me:)

D&D 5E (2024) Check Out The New Monster Manual’s Ancient Gold Dragon

Its important to keep in mind that while to hit rates have some impact on a given hits expected damage, it has a notable impact when you look over the entire rounds worth of attacks. Going back to our gold with its +17 attack. If you take a simple wizard with +1 dex, mage armor, and shield that...

D&D 5E (2024) Check Out The New Monster Manual’s Ancient Gold Dragon

I'll put out the math so we all are speaking the same language. I will also use 4 PCs as the standard default. For lvl 10 characters, their encounter budget for a hard encounter is: 3,100 x 4 = 12,400 A CR 15 monster 13,000 xp. The overall encounter is 105% of the budget. For lvl 20...

D&D 5E (2024) Check Out The New Monster Manual’s Ancient Gold Dragon

Fair enough, perhaps the Xp comparison is better. So that is ~5,800 xp or CR 10 for that 5th level party. Ok lets look at a CR 10. hehe oh the irony, first thing I see if the "Young Red Dragon". And it deals: 46 damage (or 56 with its breath). Wizard is down. Yochlol: 56 damage Winter...
