In the heat of battle, is hit point loss a wound?

The problem with this line of thinking is that everyone who argues from this point ignores that damage is part of that equation. In point of fact, just about everyone who argues for the HP = Mix has said that only that last hit point is actual damage, and even that is questionable in 4E since...

In the heat of battle, is hit point loss a wound?

Exactly! The answer to this is limiting high level magic. If my daughters have unequal numbers of cookies, there are two ways to fix the problem. Provide more cookies so that there is an even split (which means providing too much WAHOO!) or taking away cookies. I know which one my daughters...

D&D 5E (2014) D&D Next Art Column: June! And July!

There was a vector-based pdf map for Eberron put together by someone (I think I found it on the old Jhonen Olain something-or-other website) that was awesome. Maps are something I've never had a problem with in D&D. I think there are some absolutely awesome cartographers that have work...

    Rule-of-Three: 06/19/2012

I totally, totally disagree. I seriously couldn't be any farther away from your opinion on this. It's a hemispherical difference. If you're standing on the International Dateline, I'm in Greenwich. If you're at the South Pole, I'm at the North. 180 out. I could strip off those little fluff bits...

    [June] What Are You Reading?

I'm now 100+ pages into A Storm of Swords and about a third of the way through Kill the Dead.

    [June] What are you watching?

I just finished watching through "A Game of Thrones" (both seasons over the last week), which is far better than I think any live-action fantasy show has ever been. Also about halfway through the second season of "The Mentalist" and wishing it would go up on Watch Instantly instead of disc...

    At-Will Magic and Arrows

My mileage does indeed vary, quite a bit in fact. And I disagree with your "factual" statement that the limitations are bad game mechanics. They both happen in my games with some regularity. And I actually like that.

    At-Will Magic and Arrows

The even better question is if they run out of useful spells. I rarely see Vancian casters run out of spells completely, but they do frequently get to a point where their spells are not useful. As for the topic of the thread - yes, sometimes people run out of arrows (or daggers, or nearly any...

Map for an encounter in a wadi (Masterplan)

Check out RPGMapShare.com | Your source for gaming maps and mapping objects and the forums at Dundjinni Mapping Software - Bring Your Game To Life. Those are my best suggestions.

How do you like your martial characters?

I like the second option, but I wouldn't mind something like a Critical Hit triggering something in addition to doing extra damage. Like a class feature that says "Critical Hits with a warhammer, in addition to the critical hit damage, also stun the target." Or something along those lines. Sort...

D&D 5E (2014) D&D Next Art Column: June! And July!

I like iconics because they make the example play and flavor text bits more interesting, but I'll be honest in that I didn't really attach any significance to any of the ones in 3E or Pathfinder. I probably can't even name more than a couple from either game.

D&D is not a supers game.

That's because Conan has script immunity. Ask many of his adventuring comrades the same question and you'll get a lot of "No answer. He's dead." In any case, I'm done trying to convert anyone, and I hope most of us have got it out of our systems.

What is a Wound? An attempt to bridge the divide.

I would not be totally averse to something like this, in all honesty, but to agree to something like that, I'd need to see HP scaled way down. I'd still have them increase with each level, as experience and skill adds to the ability to avoid damage, but I would absolutely prefer to see that...

    D&D 5E (2014) Bring back the hobbit-like halflings for D&D Next!

If you read the first of the Drizzt novels, Regis the halfling is clearly based on hobbits. I don't have any real problem with the halflings now, but I have a suspicion that the answer will be "subraces."

    Turning the HP/Healing Dial

This is a misreading of it, from my POV. He does NOT fight just as effectively. His offense is just as effective, but his defense is not. That is evidenced by the fact that he only has 1 HP, and one more hit will get past his defenses and knock him out. Obviously, YMMV, but I find this argument...

    Turning the HP/Healing Dial

Caveat: This is just my first brush at this, and I'm not 100% sold on it. Method Mercutio01 (sort of hybrid): Starting HP: Characters have starting HP equal to their CON score. Hit Dice: Characters have a single Hit Die at level 1. Characters gain additional HD with each level. Short Rest...

The (Non-)Playtest Experience, or How the Hit Die Mechanic was a Non-Starter

I can't xp you, but I had to note that both points are extremely true. It's interesting to see that yet another HP thread has shot to the top of the subforum. It's obvious to me that the split is fairly even and that the healing mechanic is one of the most important dials WotC should be working on.
