    D&D 5E (2014) Is Warlock broken?

Mystic Arcanum is a whole nother thing. They're balanced against spell slots, but you can't upcast lower spells if needed and can only use your one selection for that level, ever. They're pseudo-slots, and not too hard to comprehend as 1x/day SLA's. Obviously separated to divorce them from...

    D&D 5E (2014) Is Warlock broken?

Concerning the once-a-day invocations, I do get why the designers would be cautious. As with the case when designing easily recharging spell slots in general. But knowing what we know now, it makes me think the balance pendulum had swung a little too far in that direction. With Beastmaster the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Is Warlock broken?

Not only that, but you don't even know the spell. If the invocation added it to your list you could at least cast it twice, possibly more with refreshes. But not knowing it and not having its own slot kind of hits you twice.

    D&D 5E (2014) Is Warlock broken?

The rest issue could be addressed, though 6-8 encounters and 2-3 rests still seem much unless you're really making a point and trying for it. But that's more a discussion of the rest mechanic itself. If it's fun, it would come along naturally. If it's not, should a DM go out of his way to try...

    D&D 5E (2014) Is Warlock broken?

Gladly! I knew I never would be as powerful as a Wizard, and frankly, I shouldn't be. But what I lacked in power I thought I'd make up for in reliability and versatility...I'd be able to cast a large number of lesser spells very often, almost "fire and forget" due to refreshes. The Pact Magic...

    D&D 5E (2014) Is Warlock broken?

I never claimed to be the defining voice for the class. Just a fan. And I qualified my statements to say that they were my observations and opinions, rather than a theoretical discussion. ("Broken" being a little so subjective a word to use here.) It's considered to be on-par with a full...

    D&D 5E (2014) Is Warlock broken?

In theory yes, but in practice I personally haven't seen this. Outside the Underdark most dungeons can be cleared in a single session. Not sure if this is DM design or PC pacing. Resting in a dungeon seems dangerous, and if the majority of the party are Full Rest classes they'll either insist...

    D&D 5E (2014) Is Warlock broken?

It's been a while, so honestly any answer would almost be a rebuild. I had taken the tome invocation, as well as the disguise self at will. I also took the agonizing blast because of course I did. Repelling blast sounds more fun, honestly, but 5e is a little less tactical and theatre of the mind...

    D&D 5E (2014) Is Warlock broken?

I absolutely LOVE that it is different. I dislike Sorcerer because it's too similar to Wizard...no real distinction in my mind, in mechanics or flavor. But this crazy new casting system is cool. Makes me wish there were other, similar options as I can't have EVERY character of mine sell their...

    D&D 5E (2014) Is Warlock broken?

One of the things I was really looking forward to! I don't really like micromanaging a lot of things...I like smart, tricky characters, and I like arcane themes, but have never played a Wizard in previous editions because I didn't care for all the fiddly math of spell slots and such. Having...

    D&D 5E (2014) Is Warlock broken?

Follow up question, then: I wonder why it is that a lot of people notice this, but are relatively silent, when boards everywhere have exploded with Ranger complaints to the point there's been not one but THREE different UA articles trying to "fix" the Ranger? I'll admit...I'm a fan. Full...

    D&D 5E (2014) Is Warlock broken?

That hasn't been my experience, at least not personally. EB spam is so effective it is near optimal. Maybe not as tweaked as a GWM Vengeance Pally, but in combat it is a very powerful glass cannon. I've had no complaints about how quickly I could mow down critters...in fact, in HotDQ, minimum...

    D&D 5E (2014) Is Warlock broken?

That, and every defense is "All you need are a few levels of Fighter, plus a feat or two, plus something else added in..." I realize that multiclassing and feats are optional in name alone, but still, stock Warlock 20 seems to need a little help (beyond the first two levels, which are as bad...

    D&D 5E (2014) Is Warlock broken?

Ranger is a favorite topic to discuss, especially Beastmaster. We've seen several UA revisions and far more fan "fixes". Most of the other classes seem all right, or at least seldom discussed. But what about Warlock? Everyone agrees that a two-level dip is OP for CHA classes, but beyond that...

D&D 5E (2014) D&D Mystic: How to handle Psionic flavor?

Random thought: What would people think if the next UA Mystic update added Psionic Ideals/Flaws/Traits, similar to the playtests for Light Warlock or Shadow Sorcerer? The biggest complaint forever for Psionics has been that the flavor doesn't fit. The UA Mystic tries to address this even so...

D&D 5E (2014) What single new class would you like to see?

A "natural Warlock", similar to how Wizard and Cleric are similar casters with different fluff and power sources. I like the Warlock class, but can't force ALL my characters to sell their souls at some point. I'd personally make this my Ranger, someone ready to go at a moment's notice and able...

D&D Psionics Survey; Plus "First Major Mechanical Expansion" Coming?

But those distinctions are given shape by their boundaries. For those two, High Fantasy is all about uncovering legendary artifacts and Horror is notorious for leaving you desperate and under-equipped to face the coming threats. A small choice - the number and types of treasure handed out - but...

D&D Psionics Survey; Plus "First Major Mechanical Expansion" Coming?

I can mostly agree here. Though in this case i think the most objectionable part is the coat of paint, whether that is pseudoscience or forced Far Realms connections or whatever else. If you paint your house road-cone orange your neighbors might complain, even if it is fully functional. (For...

D&D Psionics Survey; Plus "First Major Mechanical Expansion" Coming?

It's obvious we have different preferences here, but that's it exactly. If I'm playing a fantasy game, "it's magic" is the description I want to set the scene I want. Ancient races, gods and magic give fantasy it's unique flavor. If I were in the mood for a steampunk game, then mad science would...

D&D Psionics Survey; Plus "First Major Mechanical Expansion" Coming?

Seriously though, it's the fluff. Backstory. I can accept a old-timey fantasyland where elves and dwarves live together like dogs and cats. I just prefer there not be a lot of advanced science or robots or similar things in my medieval setting. For example, it's the same reason I prefer Batman...
