    How do Wizards cast Spells?

Unfortunately, 4th Ed doesn't specify the way previous editions did. In earlier additions each spell was noted to have either somatic(gestures) verbal, or material components or some combination thereof. Although 4th edition has no such detail, you're pretty safe if you have the wizard...

    Potential for new Character Builder

Of note, there is some of that guidance in the online builder. At least with many of the essential feats, they are classified as "fast reaction" feats and the like. There is still quite a ways to go, but I found it to be a useful feature, particularly because play & character build rarely.

A simple class for first timer?

My first thought would be essentials as well, with a slayer build fighter being the most straightforward option. In my mind it has the following advantages: 1). Striker damage through largely static bonuses. This will allow her to feel effective while simplifying the math and not to have to be...

    D&D 4E Returning to the Fold: A lapsed player's perspective on 4E

Yesterday, I had the opportunity to play in the Red Box gameday experience at my FLGS. I was quite excited, as this was the first time I had played D&D in the past ten years or so. I played regularly for a decade prior to this (predominantly the reviled, unfairly so in my estimation, 2nd Ed)...

A few thoughts/questions regarding Heroes of the Fallen Lands

From my perusal of the HotFL book this morning my understanding is that those abilities are not replaceable. I am not sure if it details the selection process specifically, but I think the pertinent text for spirit of the rule, if nothing else, can be found under retraining on page 56 "you can't...

Gen Con: Slavicsek says core books will continue to be published, other tidbits

Usefullness of broken monsters. Another though is that the "brokenness" of given monsters is sometimes defined by the PC playstyle or level of "optimization". That is not to say that the update on the math provided in MM3 wasn't wonderful, but an individual DM might still find some use for...

How were you introduced to RPGs?

My start I was introduced to D&D at the age of 7 by my older brother, who had started playing with two kids across the street a few years prior. However, I know that they had started de novo if you will, so I was only the fourth person to start playing in that particular chain. I don't...

    D&D 5E (2014) Essentials: More like 3.9e than 4.5e (link inside)

Value for new players I must admit, as a lapsed D&D player (just prior to the transition to 3E) who is looking to get my current friends involved in role-playing, the essentials line seems like a wonderful idea. I think that many people forget how daunting the hundreds of pages of rule books...
