When Did You Start Playing D+D?

I'm pretty sure that was the year of the black box D&D basic set.

Forked Thread: Why do we have a constant numbers bloat?

In AD&D 1e, a player creating a human fighter could choose to roll 9d6 and use the best three die results.

When Did You Start Playing D+D?

Going back over Gary's posts in this thread makes me wish there was a way to archive every thread he had any significant participation in for posterity.

Forked Thread: Why do we have a constant numbers bloat?

Exceptional strength premiered in the GREYHAWK supplement for D&D, as well as additional perks for the other ability scores. Diaglo can surely attest to this and the effect it had on the game.

    Talisman 4th Edition

I had my first death from the Grim Reaper on Sunday. I sent the Reaper to my opponent. He rolled for his fate, and a result of five sent the Reaper to where I was in the Chapel. I rolled, and a result of one had me frantically spending a Fate to re-roll. The second throw also came up one, and I...

    Indispensable and Valuable Non-Fiction Sources

Is Plato and REPUBLIC really elitist/fascist? Or have you not studied it enough? :p I'll add another recommendation: the works of physical philosophy (Latin: natural science) by the Master of Those Who Have Knowledge.

The late Dr. Lence at the University of Houston believed that a sniper should be set up near every university graduation stage and any student who has not studied REPUBLIC should be shot just as he reaches for his diploma.

How did you avoid spamming attacks in 3e combat?

I agree with this analysis. That's one reason I felt 3e+ hasn't gone far enough in changing the game, overall.* That is, the game has been shifted to more of a tactical combat game for which the original "abstract combat" system doesn't really work. As you note, this really requires a rethinking...

How did you avoid spamming attacks in 3e combat?

Which is sensible considering those are maneuvers for "man-to-man" combat, generally speaking. Animals and other strange beasts are better suited to simply be whacked on (via reach weapons, etc.).

    Talisman 4th Edition

I recommend buying the full new game to get all the new components, including board, counters, and rulebook. I plan on ordering an upgrade back to have extra cards to use for making custom cards.

What was so bad about the Core 2e rules? Why is it the red-headed stepchild of D&D?

Yeah, the spell lists were a bit mangled in core 2e. I remember making extensive use of a Dragon article realigning the priest spheres so clerics and druids would have their correct spells.

The Dungeon Master or The Rules: why would you play in a RPG campaign?

Any GM that is that slavish to the rules isn't a great GM in the first place. I think that is probably the unspoken assumption of us on the "GM is more important" side. We don't have to worry about being Rochambeued by the rules. A great GM will correctly ignore that horrible rule. And that's...
