Tactical grids were more of a 3.5 thing. While 3.0 used multiples of 5 ft., it didn't use squares.

It also meant that you could easily leave the class after a few levels while still advancing in its main class feature. The 3.5 bard was one of the best designed classes of that edition (even though people tended to underestimate them).
